Left the very cool Cameron Highlands for a very long trip to Kuala Besut to catch a boat to the Perhentian Islands. It was fantastic to be back on a boat again cruising along the water! After arriving on the smaller island (the larger Perhentian Island is full of expensive resorts and so basically no backpackers!) wandered along Long Beach searching for a good dive school to complete the Padi Open Water course with. Eventually settled on signing up with Turtle Bay Divers. The Open Water course itself took three days to complete. The first day was basically going over lots of theory as well as completing a couple of confined dives. You have to go through all the skills you talk about in the theory like taking the regulator out of your mouth and ... read more

Time finally for a longer trip outside of Europe again, this time with the 2 children, Freja and Alex, aged 6 and 4. Destination: Paradise on Perhentian inspired by the wonderful pictures of fellow blogger Cumberland Sausage. The photos are from Perhentian islands and our little paradise, which all readers are reminded to keep just as it is. Then there are some from Langkawi and finally from various places in and around KL. ... read more

21st So, we got up. Said "Goodbye." To Martin as he's heading up to Penang in a few days (opposite way to us). Then Jo, James and us two walked about 30 metres up the road and got the Public bus to Jerantut (It cost 6RM on the bus, some people got a ticket for the same bus from their hotel - 25RM! Here, white skin = walking ATM). At Jerantut we changed bus. During the 40 or so minutes of transition we dashed round looking for a Chinese shop. The only places that sell alcohol. No wonder Catholics call them heathons, imagine a Catholic Priest here! I've seen Father Ted. Anyway, whilst Jo was buying their beer and vodka she noticed a small dog and stroked it, thinking nothing of it. The Chinese woman ... read more

We're actually now in New Zealand! We've had so much stuff to get on here but no time to do it- so we've just slogged it all out in an internet cafe in Christchurch, Canterbury (but in NZ!). We've got tons of pics to show but we have to keep the text short- or we'll be here forever!! So here we go :) The Perhentian Islands! Have'nt got many pics of this place but thought we'd stick what we had on here anyway! This is where we did our advanced open-water diving course. The water was so clear and it was the first real taste of equatorial style climate and scenery! ... read more

Arrived in Singapore late in the evening and managed to navigate our way through the absurdly clean underground system to our little hostel. The next few days were spent exploring the city, including Little India (visited a fish market where they appeared to be selling a whole shark!!!), Clarke Quay and Orchard Road (huge great shopping malls selling every designer label under the sun - not quite backpacker shopping territory). Managed to find extremely cheep and yummy food, including traditional puddings which consisted of a lump of ice with coconut milk poured on it and fruit. Unfortunately, Barcely's fraud department were a little eager and blocked Bekka's card, so a great deal of time was spent trying to unblock it (we did not seem to be able to engage with Singapore phonecards - v.frustrating!!!). After ... read more

We caught the night train to Kota Bharu which took 14 hours in total, people would think the train would be very uncomfortable but I was surprised to find I slept throughout the journey -the beds were rather small considering my heaight but luckily we didn't have any people snoring within the carriage. Once we arrived in Kota Bharu I was fresh to see the place... so that morning I took a wonder to Central Market which is housed in a mordern octagonal building, it looked wonderful all brightly coloured displaying local produce - fruit & spices. From Central Market I then headed onto the Cultral Centre where me and Becky played 'local' games was very amusing - we firstly had a go at playing a musical instrument called Kectok which is mainly made out ... read more

On March 9 (Friday), we flew from Denpasar, Bali to Kuala Lumpur. We got in at around 9 pm (after a few hours of delay by Air Asia) and took a taxi to our guesthouse. We have about 2 weeks to tour Malaysia and could not decide on which places to visit. We thought we could visit Kota Baru (northeast end of Malaysia) and the Perhentian Islands, and then work our way south to Singapore. The next morning, we went to the bus station and tried to get bus tickets to Kota Baru. We quickly learned that it is now school holidays, and the tickets were sold out for Sunday. Rather than staying in KL for another day and leave on Monday, we decided to change our destination and go to Kuala Teregganu, also on ... read more
