Robsmiff - Robert Smith

I have just graduated from Imperial College London with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. I have a job with Shell starting in February, which means until then I have 6 months to travel and see a bit of the world!

Thought it would be a good idea to get a travel blog going so those interested enough can keep up to date on my where abouts, it also has the advantage of saving me from having to write loads of emails with similar content. Bear in mind internet connection is not always easy to find out here and when it is it's generally not the fastest, but I'll do my best to keep my travel blog up to date......providing I think people are still reading it. Remember also that I'm an engineer, not an English student, so ignore, crap spelling/grammer etc.

Please enjoy. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Our new home
The camper left for us in Christchurch airport car park
After bringing in the New Year in fantastic style on Waiheke island, Greg, Jamie and I caught a flight to Christchurch to pick up our new home for the next month; our camper, the aptly named ‘merry jape mobile’. In a truly unorganized fashion we didn’t arrange a camper van, or even investigate getting one until the day before we were ready to start our trip, on the 3rd Jan. It was at this point that we learned that we weren’t actually the only people with the idea of renting a camper van, in fact, it turns out that its one [View Full Entry]

Rick & Shavvah
Arriving into Auckland Rick and Shavvah met me at the airport and put me up for the night.
After spending Christmas with the folks in Brisbane I caught a flight to Auckland where Shavvah and her new finance Rick were kind enough to meet me and put me up for the night. Jamie arrived later the same day and we headed up north to meet Jonty and more of the NZ crew to spend a couple of nights. Greg arrived the following day. The highlight of this little excursion was probably on the first night when the tricky task of inflating the lilo came into action. I learnt that by giving Matty a joint and then a task only [View Full Entry]

Hello one and all. I come to you again from Australia, although that is not where i currently am, only where my current blog entry leaves me. I will try to keep this blog super short and fill it mainly with photos. This is for a number of reasons, firstly, the photos sum it up best, secondly it's quicker and there is too much fun to be had where i am now rather than sitting in front of a computer and thirdly because i have to say i didn't really enjoy Australia like i thought i would so really don't want [View Full Entry]

Hello All. I hope you've all had an enjoyable Christmas and were able to bring the New Year in in style. Once again it's been a long time since my last blog entry, since which i have been super busy and have much to write about. But I think my experiences are best summed up in the photos, so you'll be happy to know I'm gonna keep the writing to a minimum. Check out the photo's though... Saigon My last blog left me dodging crockadiles, avoiding bolts of lightening, cauteous of any mediorites heading to earth, suspicious of anyone looking even [View Full Entry]

Now I'm not claiming to be the 'number 1' unluckiest travel by any means, I was able to avoid the Phuket plane crash, I haven't been mugged and I'm yet to end up in a bathtub full of ice with a missing kidney. HOWEVER, I am beginning to feel that I am up there with some of the most unlucky travellers. Let me explain why...... Ok, so firstly there was the well documented 'knee incident', anybody who's paid the slightest bit of interest to my travels (or even just my general well being) will know all about that, for anyone who [View Full Entry]

Our Digs
Greg and I shared this romantic 'hut' together for the duration of our stay in Vang Vieng. It comes fully furnished with a matress on the floor and a small table.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH..............This place is awesome! Here's the gist of what happens in Vang Vieng: for a couple of dollars you rent a large rubber inner tube (from a tractor) and you catch a ride 10km up the Nam Song River. You then spend the day sitting in the inner tube floating back down the river where for the first 5km there is nothing to do but sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery around you, find your inner peace and become at one with yourself. However, after 5km, your karma has been equalised, you are finally at one with yourself and............. you [View Full Entry]

This was the result after my trip from Pai to Chang Rai......like I said, I can't explain it now, but a photo of me finding comfort amoungst bags on the concrete street at 4am sums it up quite nicely.... [more]
Heeeeeeelo Ladies! Yes, that's right, roll up, roll up, form an orderly que............Rob Smith is a millionaire! I should, however, probably point out that this is unfortunately not due to any kind of substantial windfall having come my way, and my premium blonds are yet to kick in........... rather it's largely due to..... ok completely due to, the fact that out here one of my fine British pounds buys me 20 000 Lao Kipp, but this is a minor detail so ladies, form that orderly que. Preceeding Note.... To all my avid readers who have been left poised on the edge of their seats waiting in anticipation of my next blog entry I must appologise to the both of you (mum & dad)...... and to all those 'work break'/bored/'nothing else to do' readers who might have noticed that I haven't published a blog for a while I suppose I must also appologise, the rest of you can sod off......you don't deserve an apology. I have not updated my blog for quite some time now and the reason for this is that I've simply not had the chance, [View Full Entry]

And he's off......look at the little Thai nurse, I could almost put her in my pocket!
Oh Yes, that's right! After a total of a month spent lying on my back in hospital I'm out..........clear the path and make way cause I've got two working legs and I'm not afraid to use them.Ok, so that's not completely true, I still have 17 stiches in my knee, I still have to prevent myself from bending it past a certain point to avoid tearing them open and I'm still not allowed in water, so strictly speaking I have one working leg and I am slightly afraid to use it. Still, I'm out of hospital and that's the main thing. [View Full Entry]

Ok, let's be honest. I spend 22 hours of my day stuck in a hospital room in Bangkok, there's a limit to what I can write about in my blog right now, which is ironic, because right now I more time than ever to write about it. So I thought that for those of you still reading my entries, presumably either because you're bored or are trying to get out of doing some work or something, here is a run through of my typical day: 6am: Wakey Wakey Even here in hospital with nothing to do all day I don't get [View Full Entry]
