So we landed in Ho Chi Minh city and within 1 min of leaving the airport we were already overcharged on our taxi, something we would have to get used to in the coming weeks. The first thing we noticed as soon as we ventured out was the number of motorbikes.....seriously you can not fit them into one picture as it seems anywhere you try to go you have hundreds of them coming from every direction. When trying to cross the smallest of roads you have to look left, to see whether any are coming in the direction of traffic, and then right, to make sure none are traveling down the wrong side of the road (which they normally are), to looking left again as they tend to just appear out of nowhere. Its insane! ... read more

One of the things you get from traveling, is every now and then things start happening and you know the day isnt going to pan out the way it should have, and today was one of those days. Waiting for the bus to take us back to Cairns, with bucket loads of time, we noticed it was late, and then really late, and then it drove past us. We were going to miss the flight. Luckily the bus company was okay about it all and sent us a taxi which was cool and we arrived with enough time at the airport. We got on the plane and taxi'd for take off, the plane powered up and started roaring down the runway. Then the pilot put the brakes of and turned off the runway. Apparently some warning ... read more

After spending 5 1/2 weeks in a van we had some rest bite, and booked into quite a nice hotel. As we booked 2 days before we pretty much got the place at hostel prices which was a relief!! As soon as we flew into Brisbane, and more so when we landed at Cairns, we were so relieved to be in the warmth again. We got a bus up to Port Douglas, and couldnt have been happier doing nothing for 4 days except sit in the sun by the pool!! Port Douglas is very touristy, which we like, and there were so many places to eat and drink we could have spent much longer here. ... read more

After a short flight we arrived in Wellington on the north island and caught a taxi to pick up our third and final campervan! The campervan place was a bit random as it was in a holiday park miles away from the airport. Our driver was a nice scouse man who even offered to take us to the local social club for lunch as he didn't have another job on for a few hours, we politely declined but thanked him for the offer. As we drove through Wellington we both thought that it had a very Mediterranean feel about it, with little houses on the hills. It also felt very small seeing as it is the capital and the taxi driver explained that it is only the capital due to its central location. We soon realised ... read more

The South Island normally gets rave reviews and during our 3 & half weeks traveling round in our van we would only add to the positives people say when you mention this place - stunning in every way shape or form, spectacular like you cant imagine and sometimes bloody freezing!!! Since there is too much to write, im going to summarise most of this bit! Kaikora - Its where the seal pictures came from! Literally hundreds of seals playing in the sea! Hamner springs - We drove up to the alpine town of Hamner and took a dip in the thermal springs. Walking from each spring was so cold on your feet and most people tried to casually walk, and then sped up a little before admitting defeat and running as the frozen floor kicked in! ... read more

So our sydney adventure was over after 7 months and unfortunately we joined the hoards of english backpackers at the airport as we make our long journey home........although we were heading off somewhere other than the gold coast for a couple of months on the lash......we were heading out into the middle of nowhere to hopefully get a better perspective of Australia. Our journey on the way to the airport was comical......as we went on a shuttle bus....picking up such a strange bunch of people. We picked up a old woman who kept reminding the driver she was not going to the airport to catch a passenger jet....but a private jet..........yes thats right........a private jet and 'im jetsetting all round australia on a private jet'....(but couldnt stretch further than a $12 bus to the airport), and ... read more

Saying that, we have done a few things since the last update........Shelly and Kerry made an appearance in sydney and ended up living not far away in the cross, we actually made it over to manly to check out where they are now living, and have just been doing random stuff like the food and drink weekend in the Cross and various nights out!! Well the last few weeks has seen the best weather weve had since weve been here........ nearly 4 1/2 months now.....and we thought it was time we went up to the wine growing region to sample some of the local vino's! After booking the weekend....we found that there was a wine tasting weekend going on in the city and so we spent most of the sunday in Hyde park sampling wine in the sun, preparing ourselves for the real thing! The Hunter Valley is 2 1/2 hours north of Sydney and after a long week we drove up to our accomodation which was situated on the Thalgara Vineyard.......a small family run boutique wine producer. An early start the next day saw us head round the corner to the Lindemans Vineyards to start our wine sampling...... unfortunately ... read more

Well someone pointed out we havent updated the blog since new years....... which to be fair is two months ago...... and my response was we havent really been up to much expect working. Looking back at the pics weve actually done a fair bit.... as im feeling really lazy i'll let the pictures tell the story! Just a brief summary though - we partied with the Aussies on Austrailia Day.....seriously they have more holidays over here than anywhere i know, and everytime something happens (like the big apology last week), someone sugests another public holiday!! We've been to the big zoo over here which was really cool, driven up to the blue mountains (which are really blue in the distance hence the name!), been up to see the home and away beach (Bex's highlight of the ... read more

December 31st 2007

Well 2007 has been quite a weird year......both quitting our jobs...... and heading off overseas with vague plans of what the next year or two holds! To get to the end of December seems very strange as the last 6 months has flown by at an incredible pace........and soon we will be back on the road with only a few months of travelling left!! I know the number of blog entries has fallen to Zero this month...... but we havent really been up to much that is worthy of telling you via our blog. When you actually look back at the the things you can see and achieve in a month traveling, it just shows you how good it was to take a break from what is drilled into you as being normality. New Years was ... read more
