Hello Group, After using the free internet on Saturday we headed up to the revolving restaurant in Penang to enjoy a congrats on making 2months dinner- the buffet was immense and there was no way we could've done it justice but it was worth it for the views alone. Although the obvious movement made us both a little bit dizzy. Sunday was a disappointing day as we became aware for the first time in weeks that it was the weekend with nothing open- restaurants, muesems everything appeared to be closed. We headed to fort cornwallis- unaware that is wasnt open so after taking some photos of the outside and closed gates we went for a wonder around the colonial district which had some beautiful buildings (including HSBC) and down to the marina which seemed to be the ... read more

Hello, its so hard to remember last weekend as this has been such an eventful week! We ended saturday by going to the revolving restaurant to celebrate two months of being away. We ate ALOT however, we both started to feel sick as I dont really like heights and it moved very quickly. Although we did get some great views of the city! Sunday was a boring day! EVERYTHING and I mean everything was closed! We attempt to visit the fort and museum, but it wa all closed. We had a late lunch at an Irish pub and attempted to watch a film but they were only showing Malaysian Films so that was a nono aswell! I have to admit we spent most of the day on the internet! However, we did manage to book bus ... read more

Well after sending the last blog Nick and I went up the Kuala Lumpur communications tower which gave us a 360 degree view of Kuala Lumpur. We left in time for the sunset which was good and looked beautiful going down behind the city. We stayed until it was dark so that we could get some good night pictures of Kuala Lumpur and the Petronas Towers. Unfortunately the view of the Petronas Towers was a bit disappointing as you could only really see one of them from where we were. We stayed up there for quite a while though as the view of the rest of the city was excellent. The next day we went to the Batu caves where the Thaipusam festival is held every year. The caves were big and we had to climb ... read more

This is Hannes writing. As said in the last entry Erik and I split up last Sunday. He went toward Pulau Tioman, apparently getting stuck in Mersing for a night when missing the ferry by 5 minutes, and I headed for Port Dickson. As might be noticed by the attentive, this entry is written in Melaka, the place we started from. After starting the Sunday of split-up with a mediocre breakfast at McDonald's we both went to Melaka Sentral. We were a little worried when we were told it was Chinese Spring and neither of us could get tickets at the first try. Both were, however, successful at the second and subsequently parted ways to our separate buses. I arrived a little more than one hour later at Seremban were the connecting bus to Port Dickson ... read more

It's been a lazy few days in Melaka. We have done quite a lot of relaxing and souvenier shopping among the dozens of antique shops along Jonker street and eaten plenty of good food. All in all Melaka is one of the best places on our journey. If they only had a beach... Wednesday was our by far most active day. After breakfast at a riverside cafe we handed our laundry to a cheap local laundry and went for the Lonely Planet recommended walk. It started by the very famous and very red Stadthyus, one of the many Dutch buildings in town. We continued to a street which could have been rightly named Museum street. Walking by the Islamic arts museum, the Political museum and many more we headed up to St Paul's church. We had ... read more

We have just arrived in Melaka after a two hours free bus ride. It appears to be a nice little city that we easily can enjoy for a couple of days. After six full days in KL we have decided that it is among the best cities we've been to on this trip. Lots of shopping opportunities and quite a lot of interesting things to see. Thursday we slept late and then headed out to buy Erik's camera and mobile phone. Everything went smoothly and Erik was happy about the price he had haggled to. After that we went and tried to find some books. Unfortunately the bookstores we visited didn't have the assortment we sought. Thirsty for some refreshments we walked to Sixty Nine Bistro, a highly recommended cafe from our guide book. Quite a ... read more

012 - Malaysia - Melaka 03/24/08 - 03/26/08 The Once Booming Port Town of Melaka Melaka is a port town on the southwest coast of Malaysia that was once a sanctuary for international ships sailing between India and China. It's history is marked by foreign colonizations: first the Portuguese, then the Dutch, the Japanese (for a short period during WWII), and finally the British. For this reason, the city is filled with museums and landmarks from the various countries that once controlled it. The word 'Melaka' is actually a common curse word in Greek. Hannah and I repeated it about 1,000 times a day and giggled each time we did. We also vowed not to use it again until we make it to Athens in September! We stayed at a relaxed guesthouse in Chinatown called Sama-Sama. ... read more

On the same day as my arrival to Malaysia, and after visiting the Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur, I eventually found the bus station in KL and took the short 2 1/2 hour bus trip to Melaka. Melaka is a small city with important maritime (sp?) history, including with China during the Ming Dynasty. It has an eclectic heritage and infrastructure. I stayed at a great hostal and met several interesting people from all over the world. I was the only American. In fact, I visited 4 museums, signing each guest book and looking for other USA. paging thru many previous pages I only found 1 other USA guest. The weather was hot and humid, but what should you expect near the equator. It didn't compare to the 53C in Bucharest though.... read more

Day 5-March 10th: I took the bus from Singapore/Queen Street bus station to Johor Bahru, the border city between Singapore and Malaysia. This is how the journey went: I got on the bus, then got off the bus for Singapore customs departure clearance, then back on the bus, then off the bus again for Malaysia customs arrival clearance, then on the bus to the JB bus station, then on another bus to Melaka. Whew! By late afternoon I successfully arrived in the sleepy metropolis of Melaka. The city is a port strategically located on the west coast of Malaysia, with the river flowing through town into the Straits of Melaka. Because of its location on the coast and in proximity to this shipping lane between Malaysia and Sumatra, Indonesia, the city has been controlled at one ... read more

Hi again everyone! Well we're in Melaka! We've been here for the past 3 days and this is our last night. Its a really pretty little town with lots of hidden cafes and art gallerys etc. A bit like a tropical Cornwall!! There's not that much to do around here but we've both enjoyed just chilling out a bit and getting properly used to the heat. We met a group of English people a couple of nights ago who are over here working in Hospitals for 6 months. They were really nice guys and it turns out that we had quite a mad night out with them all :) Met them in Geographers Cafe where the legendary *Mr Burns* was playing (an eccentric little Malay man) who was belting out classics such as 'Footloose' and Ronan ... read more
