I arrived to Malacca yesterday at 5am after leaving the Perhentians at noon the day before. I had breakfast at a Chinese market since they were the only ones awake and hung out til 730ish. I made my way to the hostel I hoped to get and a couple was leaving as I arrived. They said to go on in and knock on the door where the owners were sleeping. I knocked. No answer. Knocked again louder this time and a European woman in her 50s came blustering out and was clearly irritated to be awaken. She yelled at me that they had no rooms and how dare I knock on her door and why couldn't I wait outside like normal people. I apologized, said I'd had a long trip and went outside with teary eyes. ... read more

Having checked the bus situation the day before we were in no rush to leave Kuala Lumpur. Checking out at 11.30 and slowly making our way to the Pudaraya bus station we sat down for a large breakfast before hopping onto one of the hourly buses to Melaka. We arrived after only a few hours on the bus and headed straight for the old town to find a hotel. In the afternoon we enjoyed our favorite pastime, wandering around. Feeling that Melaka didn't hold enough interest for two days of exploring we opted to leave for Singapore the next day. In the evening we walked around a great night market and ate some tasty food and then retired to a bar to settle in for an evening of drinking with quite a few buckets of beer ... read more

Deretter var byen sete for ... read more

Tuesday June 17, 2008 - My new friend Andy got a ticket on the same bus to Malaka- it was mostly empty - and we headed off. I spent those two hours hoping all the sweat on both sides of my shirt was drying and he looked at the scenery as we chatted. We had to take a local bus for 10 min into town after we arrived, and then we set out to find one of two hostels we liked the sound of. We finally got ourselves to the first one and it was full already. Then we spent about 30 hot minutes wandering around trying to find the other. Turns out we had passed it at least once, and come close several times. But we got settled in with no problem. We got a ... read more

Traveled by local bus 4hours north, stopped off at the best road side stop. We stayed in China Town and found this had the best vibe of all of Melaka. From here we decided to go to Paula Basir which was described as a romantic island, white sands and clear beaches(lonely planet and accommodation).....after another local bus ride we hit the jetty. Rich called ahead to book for 3 nights...lets just say we had a lucky escape... we managed to get the last boat back from the island to find two more people waiting to cross...luckily we warned them..it turned out to be a sacred deeply religious Islamic place (thanks to a guy who had traveled 7 hours from Singapore with his family kindly explained this to us...so they let us go after many questions about ... read more

Arriving in Malaysia The staff at our hotel in Singapore- the Fragrance Hotel Crystal -were so helpful in helping us find the best public transit to use, where to eat and what bus to take to Melaka - our first stop in Malaysia. We left on the 8:30 a.m. bus on Monday morning, April 27th, and travelled in luxury to Melaka. This was a regular long bus but just 6 rows with comfy seats which each stretched all the way out like a lazy boy chair….and excellent air cond. Crossing the borders for Singapore and Malaysia was very easy and efficient. We arrived in Melaka about 4 hours later. A lovely historic port city on the west coast of Malaysia and a perfect introduction to Malaysia. The taxi driver himself was a wonderful tour guide pointing ... read more

Date visited: 20-22nd April I was expecting another hectic and chaotic city but Melaka was a totally pleasant surprise in the end. Quiet, quaint and mainly traffic-free in the centre, this place had a relaxed feel. Our bus dropped us off in the central square next to the clock tower where a pedestrianised quarter awaited our feet to explore. TukTuk style bycycles meandered around the area loaded to the hilt with fresh colourful flowers - some so buried in flower heads it was hard to see the driver or the passengers! The church bell chimed in the background a few minutes later and more locals were beaming at us without us doing anything except walking and paying a polite glance. This whole scene was most welcoming and a great surprise. A mixture of themes' presented Melaka's ... read more

Following a delay to my flight from Sydney, I arrived in Singapore in the middle of the night. However, the only real setback was a hefty taxi fare to reach my hostel, where I soon located my school friends James and Chris, who would be my travelling companions for the next ten weeks. Since J&C had been in Singapore for over a week already I was quite happy to do a whirlwind tour of the city and move on. We spent the two days I had here wandering the city's various regions on foot. The heat and humidity proved draining, and we spent much of our time escaping to air-conditioned cafes to enjoy a glass of fresh juice or a milo ice. In Chinatown I picked up a new gadget for my camera - a front-loaded ... read more

1st - 4th April - Back to Kuala Lumpur followed by a short stop in Melaka Having said our sad goodbyes to the family after a great two weeks away we were on the bus from K.L airport heading back towards central to meet up with the guys. It was late evening by the time we finally arrived into Chinatown where the hostel was located. On arrival we met James who showed us to the room. We quickly threw our bags down and made our way out to meet Ross and Rick who were grabbing a bite to eat down the street. Then just as we were strolling down the steps from the hostel we were approached by 3 English lads who told us to hand over our wallets! A little shocked we ignored them and ... read more
