Arrived in Singapore - very hot, began to realise bags too heavy and should have left half of it at home. Caught the Singapore Melaka Express bus, although express did not really describe the vehicle entirely accurately... Jane had a pet cockroache family in the window surround, a broken chair and the air con system dripped water on her head everytime we went round a corner! Had to stop twice and get on and off the bus for passport control to go out of Singapore and then about 10 minutes later to enter Malaysia. What's in between we're not sure! Very jungle like looking out of the window - banana trees and vines everywhere and not many dwellings in between Singapore and Malacca. Stopped at a 'service station' for a twenty min loo break and refreshments. ... read more

Melaka was my first stop in Malaysia...it is a nice town with a colonial history, however, the best part of my brief time there was the travellers I met. When arriving at the hostel I bumped into Jane Chen - we met at a hostel in Singapore and were both going to travel Malaysia, however, since she was on a tight schedule and left two days before me I didn't expect to see her again - so it was a happy surprise. The hostel, Shirah's Guesthouse, was basic but very friendly and had a coffee table and sofas where everyone sat around each evening and socialised. The cultural mix of people staying there was much mor diverse than the European-Canadian predominance of travellers in NZ and Australia. The first night there were three English, one Dutch ... read more

So we took the bus to Melaka and into Malaysia on Sunday morning, it was about a 4 1/2 hour journey but it passed pretty fast with all of the jungle scenery and tin hut villages going past. We also had our first over land border crossing from Singapore into Malaysia. Was easier than expected (minus a little hastle from our bus driver). We went through customs on the Singaporean side then got back onto the bus to cross the water and had to get off again on the other side to do the same. On arrival in Melaka we were accosted a few times by hostel touts, one turned out to be from the hostel we booked so the guy introduced us to the owner who in turn gave us a lift to the hostel ... read more

Our bus to Melaka left at 10am on 22nd July. It was only half-full, and we hadn't even needed to book. There was also a rule about not eating or drinking on the bus that luckily everybody seemed to ignore (it was a four and a half hour journey!) We had to go through a checkpoint on exiting Singapore, and another to enter Malaysia. The former was simple, but the latter involved the bus driver getting irate at me and Aaron because we took longer than everybody else because we hadn't been given the card that we were meant to fill in on the bus (despite having asked for one earlier). He decided we were having 'passport problems' though, obviously our own fault and nothing to do with him. We got through eventually, and carried on ... read more

The journey to Malacca, which is the name of the city in the state of Melaka (weird) started by boarding a bus out of Singapore across to the Malaysian border town of Johor Bahru. This involved getting off the bus and walking across the border out of Singapore, and then getting a bus across the bridge that links the island to the mainland, getting off the bus again, going through Malaysian immigration, and getting on the bus again when we were finally in Malaysia. The fact that we explained we had a bus ticket through to the next town didn't stop every man and his dog trying to get us into their taxi. All in all, the border crossing was pretty hectic, especially as noone spoke English. At one point, I think it was entering Malaysia, ... read more

Hello everyone. I'm in Melaka, Malaysia. I checked out some of the museums here and am enjoying the weekend festival they are having here. I'm going to spend a few days here before heading back to KL for the start of my journey back to Boise. Melaka is a small port city in the south. There are quite a bit of tourists from Singapore here. I guess people from Singapore get the month of June off or something. The festival is packed with street vendors and tons of people. It's a great place to get a meal for 3RM (1USD). We're staying at a place called the Sama-Sama Guesthouse, which is great. It is clean and has a cool atrium in the center of the building. There are hammocks!!! It's a nice relaxing place to sit ... read more

After leaving Taman Negara and embarking for another seven hour trip (two hours by boat, then half an hour by a minivan, a lunch break in Jerantut and four more hours by bus) to Kuala Lumpur I promised myself that I could get whatever I wanted in the capital city to make me happy after too big a portion of nature. Starbucks, massage, western food... Funnily enough, as soon as I got rid of my smelly and bloody (from leeches) clothes, had found a safe place to stay and walked to Chinatown I started to feel much better. The vibrant Chinatown, beautiful Colonial Quarter and some North Indian food were my program for the first night. What a welcome change the tandoori chicken and naan bread made to my diet. I must say that variety in ... read more

We had a brief moment of panic thinking we were going to miss the bus to Melaka as we left 20 minutes before our bus was due to depart. The taxi driver kept saying "oh, bus leaves at 10:30. Oh quick, quick - no time". Yes thank you we do realise that but quick might be a word but as an action it didn't really seem to be happening. Made it with about 4 minutes to spare. We arrived in Melaka and as the Lonely Planet predicted got accosted by a tout for Travellers Lodge, we had planned to stay there anyway so it wasn't too bad. It was a nice place, clean, tidy and had lots of nice amenities like a kitchen and fridge for storing food. After lunch we had to annoyingly go ... read more
