We had a brief moment of panic thinking we were going to miss the bus to Melaka as we left 20 minutes before our bus was due to depart. The taxi driver kept saying "oh, bus leaves at 10:30. Oh quick, quick - no time". Yes thank you we do realise that but quick might be a word but as an action it didn't really seem to be happening. Made it with about 4 minutes to spare. We arrived in Melaka and as the Lonely Planet predicted got accosted by a tout for Travellers Lodge, we had planned to stay there anyway so it wasn't too bad. It was a nice place, clean, tidy and had lots of nice amenities like a kitchen and fridge for storing food. After lunch we had to annoyingly go ... read more

We arrived into Kuala Lumpar at some ungodly hour in the morning and it was even later when we stumbled into the hostel as the taxi driver didn't have a clue where Trekkers Lodge was and decided to take us to every other hostel he knew in the area first. The hostel is nice and the staff are friendly. Bit of a shock though this is the first hostel we've stayed in on this trip. It was so cheap to stay in hotels in Indonesia I was quite getting used to the luxury!! Spent most of our first day in KLCC. A massive shopping mall at the base of the Petronas towers. Ate in the huge food court, had soo many delious looking foods so took ages to decide. Did briefly escape the shopping mall ... read more

Now we are going to just basically go on and on and on about how great Gili Trawangan is. It is like heaven, paradise. I'm not sure if the contrast between here and Kuta makes it all the better but this place is lush. We got to spend 6 days in Paradise. We met some people who had arrived and ended up spending their whole time in Indonesia here. We found people who had come and never left and now work and live here. It's so nice and chilled with beautiful beaches. The Journey Before we reached Paradise we had to go through hell. We basically decided to save moeny to do the journey ourselves. We had heard awful things about the ferry journey and we weren't really looking forward to it. The ferry was ... read more

We arrived in Denpasar too late to make it to Kuta. I can't say our first impressions of Denpasar were favourable but it was raining, 11 o clock at night, I hadn't eaten since 9 in the morning, bound to make anyone a bit ratty. Everywhere that might remotely sell food was shut. Call this a major city? No where to eat after 11, shocking. We got a bemo with some other travellers to Kuta and our first thought was "Oh my god there are so many other travellers". It went from maybe there being about 30 to being hundreds upon hundreds of the foreigners. It was all very exciting. However that all changed once we actually spent sometime in Kuta. Kuta is like the Australians' Southern Spain. There are tons of them on holiday ... read more

We left the nice clean orderly environment of Singapore and flew into Jakarta. Jakarta Well we arrived at night and got the usual over priced taxi requests. We dodged them and decided to go for a metered affair. At first we were admiring Jakarta's smooth roads and freely flowing traffic until we got further into town and into the famous traffic jams. Despite it being 10 on a friday night. This was our first brush with Indonesian driving which included using the hard shoulder like a fourth lane. Interestingly enough it didn't seem to get us very far very quickly. All we really saw of Jakarta was the National Monument from a distance and the National Museum which was helpfully closed. Transport In reference to the title of the blog Java seems to have EVERY ... read more

We left England and had a pretty uneventful flight. Emirates is top notch, I love it. I got brownies and ice cream for a snack. They also gave us chicken curry for dinner which was quite yummy. Durns and I both managed to talk to random men on the flights but at least mine spoke English. The Hotel On the ride to the hotel in the shared taxi, the taxi driver was happily telling the Australian man in the front seat that this was a bad area, red light district, do not stay here. Well thanks for that but it's a bit too late for your advice. We did see a line up of prostitutes on the street corner, as Durns said it was like "pick & mix"! Later on when we braved walking home ... read more

Durns is leaving to go travelling down under and I feel very sad :( Who will I have to talk to about south east asia and get excited with and worry with and obsess over every little thing that we will do. No not Desreen who still hasn't bought her ticket and half the time doesn't even know where we are going. She really is along for the ride. I hope Durns has a LOVELY time without me on the other side of the world 24 hours away from me! Even though that doesn't sound genuine I am genuinely pleased for and hope it is ace and hope that she comes back safely otherwise I will be very lonely in Asia. Shall post pictures from her leaving meal...that is if I let her leave! Visited ... read more
