Georgetown is an old colonial city with narrow streets on the island of Penang on the west coast of Malaysia and was our introduction into Malaysian life. The many races that make up Penang's population today have all influenced it in different ways, from the many curry shops and book sellers in Little India to the chinese restaurants and money changers in the Chinese Quarter with many other peoples mixed in. Shops are squeezed into narrow alleyways with a large open sided restaurant on the corner of each street. Georgetown also has a few sights including a decent museum detailing the history of the island as well as Fort Cornwallis used by the British and formerly the Portugese. Unfortunately it rained all day incessently while we were there, not really what I expected as the monsoon ... read more

We're back-dating a little now, (time has flown by since New Year)... So we left Kuala Lumpur - our plans of going to Borneo to trek amongst the orangutans didn't take shape. Flights were fully booked. So where to go? We had a week before our flight out of Singapore and we were sure we didn't want to go straight there. So it seemed a good idea to take a stop in Melaka - roughly half way between KL and Singapore. There's really not much to say. We planned on staying a couple of nights and stayed 4. It was a lovely, quiet little place with plenty of character and everything within walking distance. We stayed in Chinatown which was like taking a step back in time. Everyone going about their lives like we weren't there, ... read more

Adding on to my collection of Melaka was this family trip last Christmas. Ok, it took quite a while for me to pen this entry partly because most of my experiences were not new (read: old). And of course, so much had happened at work that I was simply too tired to update and maintain this blog space. Only managed to find time to do it this long lunar New Year holidays while clearing my annual leave. Basically, the experience was similar to previous trip partly because we stayed at the same hotel (Puri), ate the same food (laksa, cendol and Kenny Roasters chicken) and visited the same old places (Jonkers Street, St Paul's Hill etc). Update: another new shopping mall has opened recently which gave the old Mahkota Parade Shopping Mall a run for their ... read more

i was sitting on a bus in melaka trying to leave for kuala lumpur, the capital(sp). we came to a standstill due to some flooding in the area. i talked to a local about the distance to the bus station. through broken languages i thought it MIGHT not be TOO far. it was then i was debating wether or not to get off the bus and walk, thinking that it would be much faster. i kept debating despite being geared up and ready (almost) to go. finally, i decided to get off the bus. walking through knee deep water, VERY SLOWLY to make sure and avoid any of the numerous potholes (as i will sport some scars for quite a while after already having fallen through a drainage cover in cambodia). after i walked a few ... read more

OK, so this is a bit late as we left Melaka a few days ago now, but we've been busy as ever! We had a bit of an eventful journey from Singapore: just as we left it began to rain so we got a bit wet on the way to the bus station. Not too much of a problem, but then the bus broke down 20 minutes from the bus station and it took 3 and a half hours for a replacement to turn up (so much for Singaporean ultra-effieciency), so our journey time ended being double what we expected! But on the plus side the other passengers on the bus were all very friendly and kept us informed of what was happening. When we finally got to Melaka in the evening, we headed for town ... read more

Melaka is Malaysia's most enigmatic city with a rich history of royal rule, Chinese influence and colonial domination that affected many of the vital ports on the Asian trade route. It is also known as the "gateway of Islam" into Malaysia - Indian muslim spice traders brought the religion, which is now adopted by the vast majority of Malays. The city's history is reflected in its architecture - a colourful array of Chinese, Indian and European colonial influence. We spent a day of culture and education in Melaka's colonial centre and scenic Chinatown on Tommy's "Walking Tour of Melaka". The colonial Melaka reflects the styles and ideas of the Dutch, Portuguese and the British, although each succeeding coloniser generally ransacked the preceding occupier's work. The Portuguese arrived first and thir presence is virtually all gone with ... read more

We've moved a little further south, approximately a 2 hour bus drive from Kuala Lumpur. The journey from KL was fascinating as we we were located directly behind the coach driver. We heard stories that the Malaysians were wild when it coms to driving, and the journey proved just that theory. We witnessed 3 cars, badly battered, lying in the ditch off the main road. Our fears were compounded by the torrential rain outpours, but the driver didn't seem too concerned as he weaved his way through the traffic. Much to our amusement, the rest of the passengers seemed oblivious and were sound asleep. Our hostel is located in the new part of the city, right beside a supermarket and cinema, where we watched the new Bond film. You can't seem to get normal popcorn over ... read more

Back to the beach this week, our first and only beach visit in Malaysia, on the island of Pangkor, off the country's Western coastline. We arrived as everyone else was leaving, a spot of genius really, as the population of KL descends like a plague of karaoke-singing locusts every weekend - so we arrived Sunday night! After a bit of bargaining we managed to get a beach bungalow with air-con and cable TV for a knock-down rate and proceeded to do... not a lot really! The beach was probably the best one we've seen so far, quieter and cleaner than the ones in Thailand and the sea was crystal clear and unbelievably warm. Despite a few showers on the first few days (we spent our time watching HBO in the room!) we spent our time swimming ... read more

The bus down from KL was hot and long, but apart from that Melaka was all kinds of wonderful! Showing up mid afternoon we caught the bus into town, the familiar sights guiding us once we jumped off the bus and headed over the bridge into the Old Chinatown area. We decided to get a room at the Sama Sama Guesthouse, a 300 year old plus Chinese house filled with plants and lazy cats. The owners are a friendly Malay guy and his eccentric Swiss German wife, but they make the place totally liveable, and the cute decorations make it all very homely. We were lucky as just after we'd got inside the heavens opened and all hell broke loose. Water cascaded down everywhere, and the central courtyard was like an outdoor shower on full pressure. ... read more
