Trying with all it's touristy might to be quaint. Melaka has some old buildings, a couple of museums with mannequins and the like, and a lot of market stalls. I like it! We checked out an old chapel that was built by the Portuguese, taken over by the Dutch and then used by the British as a gunpowder storage unit. Ah the British. The only remaining part of the old Portuguese fort was pretty cool. It too had been rescued from sure destruction at the hands of the British. Melaka is not a very big city and no matter how hard we tried to get ourselves lost, it was impossible. -Fi P.S. we have found a great fish restaurant that makes fish 'n' chips almost as well as any fish 'n' chip shop in NZ. Love ... read more

15th Feb What a horrible nights sleep in my jail cell. I woke up to several dogs barking (that were actually living in the place we were staying), doors slamming and people yelling. On the business card it said "just like home" and even though there is usually some yelling in my house this was just crazy! I was up earlier then the girls (who didn't sleep so well either) so i just walked around for a while to pass the time. I got myself a Milo shake for breakfast (i cant believe they have Milo here, you beauty!) and headed back to my cell. The cell is so hot so we head out and of course its even hotter outside. There is absolutely no-where to get breakfast and not much is open so we skip ... read more

Melaka is the original heart land of Malaysia with a colourful history. There is plenty to see of past colonialisation including architecture and artifacts of British, Dutch and Japanese origin. We particularly enjoyed the quaintness of China Town and the Old Square which houses the Stadhuys Museum, reported to be the oldest Dutch building in the East. We caught the last few days of Chinese New Year here and spent time at a excellent Saturday night Market we spent ages browsing and even had our fortune told by an old-time Malaysian stallholder.... read more

Hello everyone, lots of things have happened in the last three days. I left the Hangout Hotel, Singapore on Sunday morning and headed for Malaysia. It was a straight forward 3 hour drive in a comfortable bus with air conditioning. I really have got to get rid of some things out of my rucksack though, it is still far to heavy for me to carry on my back. I fear I may come back Hunch Backed if I don't take somethng out. On first appearance Malaysia is a lot more rough round the edges than Singapore and we were a little worried at first when we saw some of the surrounding buildings. However, when we were presented with the Hotel Aldy I knew we were in safe hands. We spent the afternoon walking around. You do ... read more

The GAA Allstars Hurling game in the Singapore Polo Grounds....surreal to say the least. But great fun, booze and free food! Followed by an Irish bar....you just can't get away from them! Departed Singapore Monday for the short hop across the causeway border into Malaysia. Decided to take it easy on the first leg of my mammoth journey and stay in Johor Bahru, located just the other side of the causeway. It was my first ride on my mountain bike with both slicks and fully laden panniers so it took a bit of getting used to. So only 28km's were clocked on the first day's ride. Tuesday, I was headed for the not so beautiful coastal town of Bata Pahat. What I thought would be a 100km max six hour trip turned into a 142km undulating ... read more

Well we made it to Melaka in one peice, its half way to Kuala Lumpur on the west side of Malaysia. Its an interesting town, alot of history in that area it seems. A long time ago it was conquered by the Dutch and there are quite a few buildings and graves from that era still around. Most of the attractions of the town are historical rather than beach Thailand types of things. When we first arrived on the bus we were met by what we thought was the usual types of people trying to promote their hostels and cabs. We were handed multiple fliers and told great rates about where to stay. One man stood out in particular. He looked Indian (India type) and just started rattling off useful sounding information but we were a ... read more

We have just mished on our second day in Melaka, walking around for a good 3 hours trying to find anything...well eh....exciting..!!..Mission failed though as all we saw were run down shops and buildings - Melaka is described as a triving Malaysian city, but this must be past glory as we saw nothing of the kind. Yes, Melaka is definately in need of a make-over!!! Where is are the queer guys when you need them?? The area where we are staying (China Town) is probably the nicest area with cute little shops and bars - quite a relief to have picked something decent after our "Little India" experience in Singapore. The thing that is really weird thing here is that everybody stares at us - as if they have never seen two gooooorgeous Western woman before ... read more

Hi Everyone. We have just arrived in Melaka after 5 nights in Singapore. We stayed in a funny part of town called Little India and felt that we were in Bombay instead! People everywhere, Hindu mosks, and all we ate was roti with masala... Felicity had a great time picking holes in these big puffy breads they serve - it's the little things really... Although we had a great time, we were happy to make our departure this morning. Staying in a big city is the same everwhere and although we have seen lots of interesting things, we also feel a bit worn down with the busy city life. Main things we did: walking along the Singapore river, visiting the zoo (which was great!) and visiting Sentosa Island which was amusing...(but nowhere near as good as ... read more
