Sunday, we packed up the Proton Wira (Malaysian made car) and headed across the peninsula to Malacca on the west coast. The route that we took sent us through more oil palm estates and rubber plantations than we could count but the road was not very crowded aside form the occasional truck that we had to overtake. Lots of small towns on the way since we were not on the expressway but the old roads. By avoiding KL and taking a southern route we missed all of the traffic there. The trip took about 4 hours putting us in Malacca town at about 3:30pm. We got there just in time to check in at the Baba House (I’ll explain more about that in a minute) and have me zoom off to the express bus terminal to ... read more

Selamat Detang everyone Welcome to Malaysia, its early days and we are right on the tourist trail, and so far everyone has been very friendly and helpful. After a very long trip traveling the relatively short distance from the city of Singapore to Melaka in Malaysia, the time being taken by having to queue to get through customs!! Arriving in the historic town of Melaka, we found a very clean and friendly place to stay called Trekkers Lodge, the staff very friendly and helpful, towels are provided but no top sheet, this has to be hired separately!! (we live and learn). Although we’d read up about Melaka before arriving, it didn’t prepared us for the history of the place and it's been fascinating as well as a gourmets delight, well perhaps not quite, but the food ... read more

On a whim we decided we needed to see a little more of Malaysia than just KL, so we jumped on a bus to Melaka. An absolutely beautiful place, about 2 hours drive by bus from Kuala Lumpur. In Melaka, the influence of the Portugese, Dutch and British is still plain to see. Quaint little shops and multi-coloured trishaws are all over the place... Of course, the trishaws have sub-woofers installed somewhere amongst the floral decorations - and they play Beyonce and the like - which we found quite amusing!! :)... read more

Melaka is the first settlement in Malaysia dating back to the 1500's. It has an old european town feel to it, largely due to the fact that the Dutch were the first ones here. It also happens to be the hottest place we have been in quite sometime, even compared to the beach. At least there we had the ocean to cool off in! Even still we have been outside a fair bit just walking around town. Last night we attempted to go to a sounds and light show without realizing that it was a holiday here sowe will try again tonite. Instead we went to China town and perused the markets and had a bite to eat. It's a good thing my pack is full, no more purchases! But this China town does not even ... read more

Today has been crazy! As we said on our last blog we were uninspired by Melaka so we have done a bike tour today to take us out of the city into the countryside to learn and mingle with the locals. It's run by a guy from the hostel, Alias (spitting image of Andys mate Arthur Ball). The same guy who sent us to the language school. We had read comments on the tour which all said it was great, so we had high expectations. We were picked up at 8.30am along with 2 danish girls. 25minutes later we were in the countryside at his house immediately being attacked by mozzies even though we had sprayed. From here we were given our transport for the day, a mountain bike each. We rode through palm oil plantations ... read more

27.04.06 We caught our 8am speed ferry back to Mersing. It took us 2 hours so there was certainly nothing 'speedy' about this boat! Looking back at Tioman, something we forgot to put on the other blog was that we saw 2 wild porcupines, there were always lots of butterflys and cats. In the evenings there were lots of little low flying bats. Everynight there was a massive thunder and lightning show with thunder like we'd not heard before. As soon as we were off the boat we are greeted with touts and taxi drivers. We bypassed all them and were met by Dave who had caught the 7.30am ferry back. We dumped our bags and went in search of a ticket to Melaka, on the west coast. We bought our tickets, but the bus wasn't ... read more

Last night in kl was cool, we went up the big KL tower and saw the city at night - it was amazing! I was a bit scared though, didnt want to go too close to the edge, but managed ok. On the way back to china town, we found this cool indian cafe place, and we were sort of pulled in by the man who showed us all his food, and then started to dish up all these things for us, before we knew it we were eating! was very funny, the man was realy nice and kept asking us if we wanted to try things, he was most distraught that chris didnt want to try his prawns! he kept bringing them on a plate and offering them to chris over his shoulder! We ate ... read more

Yup, so I didn't eand up going to Cameron Highlands, but decided on Melaka, in the more southern parts of Malaysia. Johan decided to join me to get away from Pangkor life for a few days, so we embarked on the the last ferry out and caught the 10:30 pm 8 hour bus ride here. After switching buses 3 times, we finally made it here this morning at around 6:45am. Without a ounce of shut eye, we jumped in a cab and headed to this great guesthouse called Sama-Sama. It's yet another reggae theme with really nice owners. The place is so serene, with beautiful sunlit rooms around an inner garden terrace with a coi pond. Very nice place and at a good price too. I haven't done much today as I feel like this journey ... read more

Me and Jonny decided to head to Melaka an old colonial town of the British empire about 2 hours drive south from Kuala Lumpar, Bully and Will would catch us up the next day. We arrived at a really nice family run hostel called Melaka Town Lodge. It was approaching 6pm by the time we'd got checked in and chilled out for a while so we decided to leave all the sightseeing till the next day and go out for some food. We ended up staying out all night long. Initially we thought the place looked like a ghost town, everywhere was closed! Eventually we stumbled upon a bar that was buzzing- It seemed that all of the people that worked at a Honda showroom were on a Work social, so they were all propping up ... read more
