After flying from Hanoi to Singapore we moved on up to Melaka in Malaysia for a few days. This is a place with a 'multi-cultural' heritage it has in the past been occupied by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the British before being handed back to the locals. Hence there are many interesting buildings in Melaka. For us it was nice to get back to somewhere with some proper sun. We wandered around the old town and had a good look at the crafts in Chinatown. Jason finally got a bongo drum that he had kept going on about. We then went to see the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for a pound each!! Bargain! We went back to Singapore after Melaka and did some of the stuff we never got the time to ... read more

Lindsay - I have no idea what that means. It is the Melaka Tourist Board slogan! If you have any idea then let me know. It would seem to suggest to me that Melaka is a boring place, which is totally untrue. I think someone needs to have words with the marketing people. On the morning of the 6th we headed off with all our bags (rapidly collecting more) to the nearby bus station and caught a Transnational coach to Melaka, the next city on our itinerary. Melaka is about 200 KM (that's 125 miles) to the south of KL, and the "historic heart of Malaysia". The coach set off at 10am for the estimated two hour journey (Russ - Ha! I'm used to these supposed SE Asian estimates by now) so we settled down with ... read more

THE EGGS ARE BOILING!!!!!!!!!!!!! We left KL on a Rrrrrrrooooaaassting hot day (was about 35 degrees). When we got to the bus station we had to wait about an hour and a half to get on the bus, there were limited seats in the station, and there was no air con. Aah, so this is what it means to travel budget style?? Hangin around, sweat dripping off the end of your nose, and nae seats in a stinky bus station. The romance of it all! Of course, I'm making it sound worse that it was. We managed to plank our bums in amongst our rucksacs (which appear to breeding ... I'm sure we didn't have as much when we left Edinburgh) and got our books / technical manuals out and settled down. The journey down to ... read more

This is the 2nd leg of our Singapore-Malacca-Singapore trip from October 30, 2005 to November 4, 2005. Please check Singapore (part 2) for the days preceding this trip and Singapore (part 3) for the return to Singapore. MALACCA, MALAYSIA Wednesday After checking-out and having our luggages stored, we took the MRT to Lavender station for our trip to Malacca. This time we walked and saved the $5 very short cab ride hehe. Directions going to the Lavender / Kallang Bahru bus station: 1. From the station, exit to Lavender street. 2. From the top of the escalators, walk to your right going to the intersection (Landmark: to your left you will see a blue building, that’s the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority building - do not walk going in that direction). You are now at the intersection ... read more

Arriving at Meleka Bus Station (which has been moved from the Lonely Planet prescribed positon) for the first time on my trip I found myself not knowing quite how to get the next place, and not knowing if anyone around who would understand me. Fortunately after getting on the wrong bus a couple of times, I managed to get pointed to the bus to take me to the city (stupid tourists). I spent a couple of days in Meleka, partially just to chill out and take things easy, and partially to kill time, because I wanted to have my stitches out in Malaysia, not Indonesia. Meleka has a lot of history to it. It has been occupied by the Muslims. Portuguese, Dutch and the English, and is now occupied by rampant development. I found it quite ... read more

Melaka is considered the historical hub of Malaysia, a thriving port, conquered sequentially by the Portuguese, Dutch, British and Japanese. Now trying to reclaim it's history, and it's future, and some additional land. At the centre of it all is the sea, and it's strategic location on the straits of Malaysia. Melaka's timeline: 1396 - founding of Melaka by Parameswara, Prince of Palembang 1403 - Chinese envoy, Yin Ching arrives. 1407 - Admiral Cheng Ho and the Chinese fleet visits 1411 - Parameswara visits the Ming Emperor in China 1447 - The Siamese attack, but the Melakan fleet repel it. 1509 - Portuguese traders arrive, led by Dieo Lopez de Sequiera, with a fleet of ships. This time we planned to stay some time in Malaysia before heading to Indonesia once again. Leaving Singapore and entering Malaysia was really a piece of cake, the Malaysian immigration being far less rigorous than the Singaporean one. We soon arrived in Johor Bahru and there it did not take us long to catch a bus to Melaka. We arrived quite late in the night (around 10:30), took a taxi whose driver spoke excellent English and was a real chatterbox disclosing some interesting information like the usual taxi price to us. We feared that the place we had chosen to stay on would no longer be open at that late hour of the day, as it was not a hotel but a privately run guesthouse. But we were lucky, after ringing the bell of the Kancil ... read more

This was our last leg of the Malaysia tour. Malacca, or Melaka depending on how you wanna spell it, is Malaysia's oldest city. I don't remember much of its history, though our tour guide spent about three hours explaining it. I had a cold and had energy sucked outta me. Anyway, it involves the Dutch and St. Francis and battles and other interesting stuff. ... read more

Explored Melaka today...lots of character due to the different architectural influences resulting from its contact with traders from China, Holland, Portugul, Britain and the middle-east (which also brought Islam). There's a noticeable chinese presence here and china town is pretty interesting;incorporating buddhist temples, mosques and hindu temples..and the food is great. Went to the Maritime museum which is inside a replica of an old Portuguese sailing ship. Good views of Melaka from the ruins of St Pauls church overlooking the city.. Clare arrives 6:30/7am on the 25th at KLIA but I'll probably hang around here till then as rooms in KL are 40RM for a single...the place is relaxing enough...... read more
