What is happening here.?..we're on the flight when I notice this really badly dressed businessman about to go the toilet with a gas lighter and a fag in his hand...what the ...? ....after a small altercation with "one" of the passengers and a telling off from the flight attendant the badly dressed man gets the hump and falls asleep without smoking his ciggie... KLIA 8:25am goodbyes to Jacquie and Jeff - we may catch up later on..maybe Perhentian or somewhere in Thailand. Getting to Melaka was easy...and it also made me realise how expensive transport in Sabah is... Got a single room in the travellers lodge for 12RM - an attic type room too, pretty unsual, trapdoor entry and padlock...very cosy. Very trashed..so did a little bit of exploring then crashed early... ... read more

After two days in the city I decided I needed to escape and see some more of the country so took myself off on a little day trip to Melaka. I got up early and still rather bleary eyed at 7am I faced my first challenge of the morning - the sweat pit that is Puduraya Bus Station in KL. My first impression was the strong smell of food.... deep fried i don't know what, but as it didn't look suitable for us vegetarians I didn't hang around to find out! Buying a bus ticket here is an interesting experience - you walk along a narrow corridor with ticket booths on both sides from which sellers shout destinations at you. When you hear the one you want you just have to find the right seller that ... read more

Hotel Puri and Beyond, Serenity in the heart of beautiful Melaka "Selamat Datang! Welcome to the award-winning Hotel Puri in the heart of Historic Melaka! Finally, we got a chance to stay in this beautifully-restored hotel. I had to admit that this was one of the best hotel stays I had with lots of charm and character. Forget about the 4 or 5 stars hotel in the vicinity. If there was one place that you should stay while in Melaka, Hotel Puri was it. Of course, for the budget conscious, the neighboring Baba House made an excellent alternative with rates 50% of what we were paying at Puri. Both hotels are situated along the historic Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Lao Jie - Old Street), next the Baba and Nyona Museum - also another gem ... read more

Our coach bus departed from Lavender Bus Station at 8am on our way to Melaka, an idyllic town about 4 hours journey from Singapore. Clare, Chucky and I had decided to spend our 3D2N long weekend in the historical town. It was our second trip into the sleepy state so we were kind of expecting what she had to offer. Nevertheless, the small historic town had proven itself to be attractive to inject a few suprises each time we visited. I love to stay at one of the many boutique hotels along Jonkers Street to “smell” the history of the place in a peaceful setting. This was lacking in the urbanized republic that we came from. We were greeted by the brand new Melaka Sentral Bus Terminal at the northern suburbs as the bus pull over ... read more

My first impression of Malaysia reminded me of a Paul Simon song "You can Call me Al". in one of the verses, the narrator finds himself a stranger in a strange land. He doesn't speak the language, holds no currency. Hears the sounds of cattle in the marketplace. Yadda Yadda. I arrived in a bus stop half way to Melacca (or Melaka, or any of the other 15,000 ways I have seen the city's name spelled). I was starving, and really needed to use the toliet. Too bad for me I forgot to covnert some cash into Malaysian before I left. It was such a mad rush to jump on the bus, that I totally forgot. After moping for a few minutes on my bad luck, I decided to see if the vendors might happen to ... read more

Our bus ride from Pudu Raya station in KL to Melaka took roughly two hours. As soon as we arrived in Melaka, we hauled a cab to bring us to the center of the action: the history quarter. I’ve always heard about the City of Melaka, where the great Malay culture, which defines Malaysian and part of Indonesian cultures, started. Malay history was famous for its regional exploration and sea navigation achievement, just like Christopher Columbus of SE Asia. Most of the names started with “Hang”, so all these heroes named Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Lekir, and some others I can't think of now. We decided to ‘tourist-hopping’ Melaka, so the plan was to check out these tourist spots, quickly. We got off our taxi near the Porta de Santiago, or AFamosa, which was built ... read more

I left Singapore on the Friday for Melaka, a large town around four hours away by bus. Melaka, although at first seems to be really busy, it isn't. It's just the badly laid out roads and the poor driving that gives it the impression of activity. I travelled to Melaka with two Dutch guys and a girl, Erwin, Lucien and Carolyn all of whom I met in my hostel in Singapore. Erwin and Lucien were both training to be English teachers, and so spoke perfect English. This was great as it meant that I didn't have to talk 'posh' all of the time. It's amazing how much trouble people had with my slight Norfolk accent - at home I didn't consider myself to have one. Around Melaka there were lots of sights to visit, mostly museums ... read more
