Well, we've actually arrived back in the UK now, but rather than write about that we thought we'd tell you all about our last stop on our travels, Niagara Falls. Actually reaching Niagara Falls was an achievement in itself, having failed to get there the last time we were in Toronto, due to James being ill for three days, so we were arriving back from Montreal and found ourselves with a single day in which to fit some more sight seeing. Luckily we managed to book onto a one-day tour, which set off from the city early morning and dropped us back late evening, curiously the tour operator was called 'Chariots of Fire' and even with the benifit of hindsight, it's hard to work out why. Yes, they did play the music from the movie ... read more

Bonjour, cava? We arrived safely in Toronto late last Saturday evening, after a particularly horrible domestic flight from San Francisco (who would have thought USA to Canada was domestic?), and after being collected by our friendly host, settled in for the night in our lovely new hostel, ready for an exploration of Toronto, and then Niagara Falls in a day's time. Canada is our last country before we head home, and although the neighbours next door looked slightly like they were running a drug's den and were nasty bits of work (it turned out they were and they are), we were excited about being here for a fresh adventure. Unfortunately overnight James was struck down with a nasty flu-like virus which manifested itself in aches, pains, a headache and a raging fever, leaving him bed ... read more

Well our entry into the United States was as unpleasant as we had envisaged, but for completely different reasons to the ones we were expecting. Our flight was from the Cook Islands, into Los Angeles, with a connecting flight to San Francisco. We had assumed that the security increases at airport immergration, put in place after September 11th, would be our main obstical, but we were greeted by a crazy security officer at LAX who chatted to Joanna about his relaxed approach to security questioning before asking her to smile for the camera and say 'cheese burger' for her photo! No, our main problem was the fact United Airlines decided to cancel two of the four afternoon flights from Los Angeles to San Francisco, one of which was ours. With our bags checked in for ... read more

Well we're on the Cook Islands, safe and sound in our accommodation (Rau's Gueshouse), which is amazing - we basically have a beach house all to ourselves and we look straight out to the white beach and the crystal clear waters. Getting here was a strange experience... we ended up going back in time, as we set off on the 30th May and arrived on the 29th May! Joanna wanted to bring a newspaper from Auckland so everyone could see into the future! Instead we just brought a big cool bag full of food staples, as most things on the islands are shipped in from New Zealand. When we went round the main supermarket we weren't prepared for the prices on offer - five pounds for a litre of fresh milk! Wine was actually cheaper ... read more

Ok, Ok we admit it, we have fallen hopelessly behind with our blog, so prepare for a whistlestop tour of the end of the South Island travels and our recent zoom around the North Island. Seatbelts on... After Fox glacier, and a glance at the Franz Josef glacier through torrential rain and clouds of descending mist, we headed across the top on the South Island to Kaikoura - famous for it's marine life, whales etc. Unfortunately we have managed to miss whale season EVERY single place on our world trip, and so true to form, we had to settle for a seal colony. As you can see from the pictures, they weren't shy, but were a little grumpy and stinky, having just spent the night sleeping in the bushes in the middle of the carpark ... read more

After Milford we stopped breifly in Queenstown, which didn't really appeal to us that much, so we moved swiftly on to the small town of Wanaka. Sitting next to Lake Wanaka, this town is a sleepy little place with lots of charecter and in one of the most picture perfect locations you could hope for! When we arrived mid-afternoon, the beach was humming with locals pushing their boats into the river and tourists wading into the waters. We camped just out of the town centre at a little spot by the river in preparation for our trip up to Haast and onwards to the Fox Glacier. After spending the following morning admiring Wanaka (and talking about how we could definitely live there), we booked our glacier trip and headed off up to the Haast Pass ... read more

After Mount Cook we headed to Dunedin stopping to look at the Moeraki Marbles on the way, the tide was in but we had fun getting our feet wet in the New Zealand sea for the first time - bloody freezing! Dunedin itself is a little city (they all are pretty small in New Zealand) of Scottish origins - not that remarkable, but with the most beautiful train station ever! Sadly, there are no passenger trains in most of New Zealand and the station's ticket office is deadly quiet, apparently the government sold the railway and the new private owners weren't making big bucks, so they just closed it down! Makes you glad for the struggling British network, sort of. Leaving Dunedin we stopped in a couple of small towns on route to the West ... read more

Yes, we're in New Zealand... and it's amazing! We landed in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island and stayed in the first hotel of our travels (thank you Joanna's parents!), complete with swimming pool and spa! We spent our first afternoon exploring the city and its beautiful gardens - they say Christchurch is New Zealand's most English city and coming straight from Australia it felt like a complete contrast! Although the city was great and our hotel was fantastic, the real excitment came when the campervan was delivered to Joanna's parents - this is our home for the next few weeks and it wasn't long before we had stocked it up and hit the road! Our first stop was the tiny French town of Akaroa, which was really cute and we got our ... read more

This is actually a blog from New Zealand, as we are a bit behind with writing everything up! Sorry for the delay, but the internet seems to be getting harder and harder to access (when they say it's like England 50 years ago, they aren't kidding!). Anyway, for our last week in Australia and we did a whistle-stop tour of the places we most wanted to see on the East Coast. We left Sydney and got a flight to Hervey Bay, the launching pad for the world's largest sand bank island, Fraser Island. As you can see from the pictures, this was a pretty amazing place! We we're part of a tour group, so we just had to sit back and let our guide take us to all the 'hot spots'. The best part was ... read more

We think that we may have finally found our favourite piece of Australia..and only two hours from Sydney, who would have thought? After an initial stopover in Sydney, on the recommendation of some friends we met in Western Australia over Christmas (thanks Jason and Hayley!!), we set off for a few days in the Blue Mountains. We were told that the views and walking trails up there would surpass anything we had seen so far in Oz, even on the Ocean Road, therefore when we arrived on Sunday afternoon at our gorgeous little hostel up in the mountains we were on top of the world... We woke up the next day to the thickest mist we had ever seen, and that's saying something coming from Northern England, but we set off on a hike through Katoomba ... read more
