The journey just seems to get better each day... I found another companion in the bus to Melaka. Meeting strangers can be such a fun, I knew only after I met Dana. We never felt even once like we just met, we clicked instantly and thereafter it was no looking back. We were like inseparable, so much so that the same evening I checked out of my hotel to stay with her in Ampang. We were together untill the time I finally had to say "good bye Malayasia". But the time we spent together was the best days of my life in Malaysia. ... read more

We have now spent two days in Melaka. It is a beautiful place, a far cry from the hustle and bustle of singapore. We are staying in a lovely hostel with an inner courtyard smothered in tall and hanging plants, and fish ponds adding to the serenity. It's ace. Yesterday we ate at a buddhist vegetarian place where the food is free (although there is a donation box). There were a lot of people who seemed to really rely on the place and it humbled us to be there, with everyone there being so nice and some individuals taking the time to chat with us and others who showed us exactly what to o (it was confusing without this persons guidance! You went in, helped yourself to a plate, cutlery, rice, many many exotic dishes and ... read more

Tuesday 1st: Local Food Day + 1st day of May, Matt has B'day on the 12th: Well, after leaving Kuala Lumpur pretty early we arrived in Melaka Sentral (Main bus station). Instead of getting ripped off with a taxi we got the guy touting a hotel to tell us where to get the No. 17 bus to Melaka Parade (get off at the Equestrian hotel). Anyway, finding a hotel was easy this time. Pudu in KL and Traveller's lodge here have some kind of mutual agreement to plug eachother (Or it certainly seems that way.). In any case, we got a clean big room, with balcony (Shared bathrooms, but clean) all for 27RM (4 quid 50p)! Bargain. So, with the bus journey being only about 2 and a half hours we had all day to see ... read more

Having left the tackiness of Sentosa Island behind me I jumped onto a rather luxurious bus to Melaka, just a few hours across the border from Singapore. Arrived at the central bus station and was welcomed by a huge Tesco's. Hurrah! I didn't venture into it though as there are a lot more interesting things to see in this historical Malaysian city. Here comes the oh-so-important, but brief (I promise!), history bit! Melaka was the centre of the Malay world throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries until it was overtaken by the Portuguese, and other subsequent countries, Britain included. It is this presence of different nationalities taking power in Melaka that make it so interesting. Most of the tourist spots are located very close together around St Paul's hill where you have the ruins of ... read more

We don't seem to have received your Masters progress report, which was due on 01 April 2007. You can use the link below to download the necessary form that needs to be submitted: -someone able to do this for me?? Just follow this link: http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/acad/documents/forms/masters_progress_report.doc I'm sure that it's a simple procedure. Allrighty, Malaysia. I arrived in Malay the other week (last I think) but I've been all round the show since then and I finally made some friends whom I travelled with for a bit. Escaping the crazy anarchical archipelago of Indonesia was actually a bit of a relief. On the west coast, I checked out Georgetown (Penang), KL and Melaka. Every main city seems to have a Chinatown, a Little India and then a more-or-less Malaysian minority. It's an interesting mix of people ... read more

Also known by it's Olde English spelling of Melacca, this city was interesting and worth a visit. However, our expectations promised so much more, so ultimately disappointed. This place is briming with history, rule having been forcibly removed from the Malays to Portuguese rule, then between the Dutch and English, then back again to the Malays when Malaysia gained its independence from Britain in 1957. I guess we expected something like a UK/European historic city, where you are surrounded in incredible architecture in the heart of such cities. In Melaka this was much more peppered around the place. For once, I was thankful that we'd gone against our prinicipal of tending not to do day tours that you could just as easily do youself more cheaply. We were a bit pushed for time by the time ... read more

On March 19, we left Cherating for Melacca. First we took a local bus from Cherating to Kuantan. We did not realize that Kuantan has so many Chinese residents as there are many Chinese business signs. In Kuantan, we walked from the "local bus station" to the "long distance bus station", about 20 minutes walk. At the second station, we boarded a bus to go to Malacca. The road from Kuantan to Malacca is quite bumpy (or we have a bus that does not offer a smooth ride). Comparing to the other rides we have in Malaysia, this is probably the worst, but of course still much better than the Burma or Thailand buses. Half way from Kuantan to Malacca, the bus picked up some foreigner passengers. They obviously spent time in the National Park ... read more

Grrrrr... lucky enough I'm off to Thailand so I'll befriend a thai and ask them to help change it to English (fingers crossed!!) Took 5 hours to get to Melaka which is a beautiful small town with a lot of history with Portuguese, Dutch and English history to it. We only spent the morning sightseeing - St Georges Church, Dutch Village then we had to ... read more

On our last day in KL we went to see the Batu Caves and walked around Chinatown a bit. I really like this city a lot. It's fun to see all kind of people, different races and different religions living in harmony. Yesterday we took the bus to Melaka, only 150km from KL. It used to be Malaysia's capital a long time ago. Melaka has also been strongly influenced by colonial powers from the Netherlands and Portugal. Some parts of the city look quite european. In general there's a great mix of races and religions. Ine one street you find a Chinese temple, an Indian temple and a Mosque. No wonder, the street is called harmony street. Beside all the historic sights Melaka has two huge shopping malls. It's fun to judt walk around and look ... read more
