13th Dec Sunshine!!! Horrah!!! Ah man it feels good to have the sun on my face again after those 4 days of non stop rain! We spend a full day wondering around this brilliant vibrant Malaysian town learning all about the history of the Malays. We take a walk through a beautiful Malaysian village, Kampung Morten just north west of the town, we walk along the river down to china town where we wonder around some beautiful temples. Massive chinese influence here, we presume for the influx of wealth they brought with them with teh trading of spices 100 years or so ago. We visit a heritage museum where we take a guided walk through a beautiful Baba-Nonya house (Chinese Malay). We head back for a well deserved snooze and then hit up the sound and ... read more

Small town in the south of Malaysia, Melaka is just charming with its small houses and its histrical area. The people are great and even though there isn't much to see, 2 days going around make it a pleasant stay. It was first colonised by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the British who had to let go off Malaysia in 1957.... read more

Malaysia is just how i imagined it. Travelling through it, jungle and mountains line the highways, it's so picturesque. We hit Melaka first. Melaka is a pretty town, with lots of history. The Portugese were there first, then the Dutch, and the Brits took over late 1800s. So all of this is evident in the architecture, with bright red Portugese houses. It's very quaint, and we managed to get round all of it within a day, tho we stretched it out over the two. The group is gets on really well, and we have most of our meals together. Our group leader Ian knows all the great, cheap places to go for local food so thats a real help! We're in Kuala Lumpur (otherwise known as KL) at the mo. Got up early this morning to ... read more

05/10/07 We arrived portside in Kuala Besut, still in one piece, although both looking rather wind-swept on the barnet front (personally I was not looking totally un-'There's Something About Mary'-esque!!). We proceeded past the throng of taxi drivers and headed for the bus terminal to check the times for our trip to Kuala Lumpur. We already had it in our minds to stay here for 1 night and head to KL early tomorrow so we could catch up on some interneting (nearly 3 quid an hour on the Islands, 75 pence an hour here), and make sure we got to KL at a reasonable time. We found the bus left at 9 tomorrow so decision made, and we headed off to find an internet cafe, and a guest house. We found both in no time, and ... read more

Went to visit Bukit China this morning - a Chinese burial ground on a hillside with trees. No one else around but some amazing headstones - some people had small houses on their graves, but most had horse shoe shaped memorials with large moats around the back and with round stones in the middle. Some even had water in front which the dragon flies hovered above. Visited the Museum of Enduring Beauty which featured information about the different cultures of people settled in Melaka, a display of tops (which seems to be a national sport) and kites. The top floor was all about body beautification: tattoos, piercings, foot binding, corsets, earrings etc. and featured pictures of many tribal people. Well worth the 2 ringit entrance fee. Then visited the Sultans Palace - a cool dark wood ... read more

Fun and games this morning trying to access our safety deposit box. The manager took us into a little back room and we tried to open the box with our key and his. He clearly didb't know how to use the keys and left us on our own in the safe room for about ten minutes. We stood around chatting and joking for a while and thinking about how we could do a massive heist, but eventually went to look for him. Another hotelier was rather startled when we appeared out of the safe room and promptly helped us. Headed in to town via another route - mainly market area. Steve managed to purchase a roti cup to disperse the batter onto the hot plate - looks like a massive swirl of batter very thinly spread ... read more

Nearly missed the fantastic buffet breakfast included in price consisting of full English; continental; Malaysian - curry, rice, noodles; Japanese - wanton and dumplings; fresh fruit, cereals, salad, Indian: rotis and dhal. Fantastic - no need to have lunch, just skip through until supper. Bit jet lagged and needed waking up - Steve thought it was a dawn raid! Spent the day wandering around shops in Little India - most of the shops just sell items in boxes or bags as they come on the shop floors; other shop keepers were busy making flower garlands out of fresh blooms and threading them onto strings to offer in the nearby temples. We have walked everywhere so far, but Steve met a trishaw driver called Steven Steven from Portugal who has promised to take us out for a ... read more

After jumping on a public bus we traveled from KL to Melaka, only a couple of hours away. This place has lots of colonial history Arriving at the bus station in Melaka we were shown some pictures of a really nice hostel and decided to go and have a look and caught a local bus to the hostel. The place were we stayed was really unique and had a traditional living room which consisted of a wooden floor and seats on the floor. We were given two rooms to chose from, which was lucky as this place is usually very popular and difficult to get a room. We chose a cosy room up in the loft. We decided to have a wonder and took a tour around the naval museum - Melaka used to be a ... read more
