Moshi - Mt. Kilimanjaro 2-13-06 We left Kampala at 5:10 Am on a well maintained, Kenya Air 737 jet. The 1-1/2 hour flight to Nairobi was uneventful as was the turboprop flight to Kilimanjaro airport. Upon arrival we learned that there are no busses from the airport to Moshi where we planned to stay. It cost $50 US to take a cab for the 15 mile ride to town. Tell me cabbies aren’t the same everywhere. Later we learned that we could have taken a cab about 1 mile to the main road and flagged down a bus from there to town for about $2. Moshi is a scruffy smallish town, but it is where you stay if you can’t afford the luxury safari lodges near Kilimanjaro. We found a decent place to stay, the Kindoroko ... read more

On friday when we had finished teaching we all got changed and headed into Arusha. We had arrabnged to meet al the others at Masai Camp. Its like an actual campsite but also has a bar and resteraunt so we were going for a meal and some drinks. I had a pulled pork sandwich and chips, the first meat in like a week! After a few drinks and some (badly played) games of pool we decided to go to Colobus, the night club, for a bit of a boogie. We got a lift from a guy called Willam along the road, it only takes a few minutes but if you go out after dark it ios pretty likely that you will get mugged. I had an amazing time dancing and drinking and so on, the club ... read more

So far Tabitha is still single. Shirley and I have been beating the guys off… have been to Mountain Lodge (7200 feet up). The highlight was Tabitha running through the forest with her pants down with a few Fire Ants attached to her ass. Quite the lovely sight. Next we were off to Lake Nakuru, which is home to 1.9 million flamingos. A beautiful pink sight. We also saw our first Rhino - rounding out the complete Big 5 sighting. Unfortunately it chased us as he was a wee bit grumpy cuz someone had sawed off his horn and he was pissed (but it weren’t us!). From there it was two nights at the Masai Mara. Being such wonderful giving girls, we let them upgrade us to the one and only State Room! Wow! Second day ... read more

We are now living in our house and have already started teaching, its been less than two weeks since I left home, this is just crazy! We left the outpost early on tuesday and whent to shoprite, the local supermarket, to stock up on pasta and beans. That was fun and didn't take long so soon we were on the road and driving up bumpy hills to Nkoaranga village on the slopes of Meru. We had seen it before but it was still daunting, the idea of being left alone on the hill and teaching 50/60 kids english everyday! OH MY GOODNESS! Anyway... Mads (the CW rep) came up ith us and took us to the schgools to have a real look around and meet the head teachers. But, being Tanzania, neither of the head teachers ... read more

I finally made it to the music fest around 9pm and unfortunately missed the jazz band Taffetas, who I had seen the prior week in Dar. But of the ones that I caught, this one was one of my favorite. It was an East African reggae band with some really awesome performances. ... read more

1. Working at the trauma hospital has been very rewarding. The Emergencies tend to be higher acuity with lots of trauma care and OR time. 2. Everyone at the MOI from staff to professors and patient has been very welcoming to me all week. It's so nice how protective they are of me. 3. I met some more members of Poni's church with a friend named EVA and they cooked some food that was da BOMB with freshly squeezed mango juice! That could really spoil me, shoot! She promised to teach me some Swahili cooking Bongo-style. 4. I got my hair braided on Sunday and will have some dresses made soon. Everyone thought I was a Tanzanian or Azanian, now I'll really be by next week! Though my Swahili is still quite bad! LOL 5. I ... read more

Hello from Tanzania! "Africa is hot!" Especially when we compare to current temperatures in Europe! This was the first thing we realised when we stepped out from our plane to Kilimanjaro International Aiirport on the 12th Jan. On the way to Moshi we fell in love the landscape of the dry savannas and acasia trees right away. Our plans were the following: -of course we came to climb Kilimanjaro, that is why most of the travellers come, but before that we scheduled in an aclimatisation climb of Mount Meru first- -then safari, which is a must if you are in East Africa -then beach, we need to have a rest after the tiring climbs and the dusty roads Meru was really great! The fist day of the climb was rather a walking safari. We went through ... read more

1. My cell phone was stolen this week at the gym tonight. I left it for only a few seconds it seemed, but a few seconds was all it took. Kinda caught me slippling because I am ususally more cautious. It's something, the nurses and doctors at the ER were just warning me to be MORE careful that very day! 2. Same day- different time, someone stole my new shower slippers.(they cost 700 TSH ~65 cents) Why? who knows the front desk tells me that people have even steal lotion that 300 TSh. Bad day for me! 3. This Rasta-like street vendor is damn near stalking me. He waits outside of this internet cafe and other places around the town center waiting for me to come out. Then apologizes when I seem rushed. I'm not trying ... read more

Here I am in Tanzania! Its all a bit crazy but my journey started on the morning of february 2nd with a train journey from edinburgh waverly to london kings cross. I met up with Elsie (a fellow volunteer from Inverness) at the station at 9, we had met once before, and said our goodbyes to our parents. We spent the journey playing cards and chatting but when we got to london the problems began namely- I couldn't lift my rucksack! we had to get an underground and a bus from kings to the airport and that was interesting! Anyway- at the airport we did some last minute shopping in Boots and then went to meet the others at Cafe Nero. We spent a couple of hours chatting to everyone and then it was time to ... read more

Today I literally got the “hot seat”. It’s just a hump actually, that sticks out behind the front seat of the Dala Dala. I don’t know how the kids do it. It’s where they usually have to sit when adults need a seat on the bus. Today, I sat there because the other option was---Me standing or truthfully bending, (‘cause you gotta be under 5’4” to stand upright in there) on the entire ride to Muhimbili on a dirt road that made New Orleans potholes look like smoorth sailing. The bus was jammed pack. It have seats for 15 but there were 21 people already in and they were stopping to pick up more. This is the primary mode of public transportation around Dar. Unfortunately , since they run the streets, they make the rules. If ... read more
