I was going to the YWCA on Thursday evening to check on a room for Sunday and ran into my Sister friend Poni. She said she had been looking for me because she wanted to invite me to a bridal party. So after I made arrangements to reserve a single room and then leave my luggage there while in Zanzibar we left together. She took to Mwenge to her church to pay for the party and we received a wrappa (a big clothe) that all the women will be wearing. Her church was huge she said they had 7000 members so it'll see what it's like tomorrow. The bridal party that I am going to today is for the bride of the pastors son. The wedding itself is next week so I'll be excited to see ... read more

Today I went into Dar centre quite early, going to see the Doctor first thing. The results of the tests were ready. All of the tests were normal, except for the stool test. The stool test showed roundworm. So the Doctor gave me a prescription for various drugs, levamisole hydrochloride for the worms, omidazole and epirazole in case of ulcers. The drugs actually cost more than I ever paid for the Doctor. I felt well enough to go to an internet café, so I was able to catch up on email, and update my travelblog. One hour of surfing for just 1000 shillings (0.5GBP). I went back to the house in time for lunch. In the evening we had great fun with my digital camera. They don’t get many opportunities to use a camera here, so ... read more

I just made arrangements to move to the YWCA in the downtown center. It''s closer to everything and much easier to get around than in Changanyakeni where I have been staying. I'm making reservations to up to Zanzibar this weekend for a mini vacation. It's ridiculously inexpensive and it's a beautiful island like Hawaii, but not so commercialized. I know that pics aren't on this website yet. I have to resize them. My camera takes them with to must memory. So I'll put them up tomorrow when I get to Zanzibar. ... read more

Today was spent at the house the entire day, with no need to go to the hospital until the results are known. I had no diarrhoea at all today, very good news, Bwana asifiwe! (Praise the Lord!). I also did not wake up until quite late - after eight o’clock. In the afternoon I felt sufficiently well to go and visit the local shops, buying some oranges, pineapple as well as my favourite pineapple fanta. I got a bit more of a feel of the surrounding area. It is quite a close community, with everyone knowing their neighbours. People are quite trusting with one another. For example, in Zanzibar whenever I brought soda I always took empty bottles with me, otherwise you have to pay a deposit. Here we did not need to bring any empty ... read more

Man oh man! What I would give for a cup of ice. It's HOT!!. Like hella hot! I am drinking like 3 liters of water before 4pm and probably sweating twice as much. I just got registered to work at the hospital officially today and already I had to change my rotation from 8 weeks to 6. As hot as it is I may be changing it to 4 and 4 up north in Tanzania where it's cooler. But by this Friday I should been moving to The YWCA in the downtown area and it's closer to the hospital where I am working. Then I will be taking 1 bus to work instead of 3. On the bright of things, I have been meeting some wonderful people. From all over even. 2 female students from Sweden, ... read more

I woke up once during the night again, but this was not too much of a problem. I have been trying to drink lots, and I needed to go to the toilet because of that. I got up earlier than previous days, to send stool samples to the hospital fairly early. Sadly I had diarrhoea again before we went, and in fact when we were supposed to be going, I had to come back before we reached the car, to go to the toilet. I took a loperamide, and this allowed me to reach Muhimbili hospital without any problems. Once there, other than give the two samples, we did little. I did not see the Doctor today; I will see him once we have the results of the tests. After going to the hospital, I went ... read more

Once again, I woke up during the night, with some indigestion and flatulence. Also, still a some earache. By the morning the malabsorption was back, frothy and floating stools. I went to the hospital for various tests, malaria again, widal test for typhoid, full blood picture again, urine test as well as stool test when I provide samples. Hopefully the cause of my problems will be better identified. We had lunch in Dar Es Salaam, which we unfortunately left a little late, making it harder to get suitable food. In the end I ate rice, liver, spinach and beans, which should be ok for me. However, I was told to avoid beans by a previous Doctor. Dar Es Salaam is much bigger than Zanzibar Town, and actually much cleaner. This surprised me a bit, I even ... read more

God is really good. I met a woman today with a beautiful Spirit. She is born again and on Fire. She saw me on the street today downtown center looking for classes for Swahili and another place to stay. She was so gracious she took me all around showing me where things were. She is also an artist and took me to where her art is diplayed. A beautiful woman inside and out, she's Sudanese, but was born here in Tanzania. She stands out as much as me here. I told her she should be a model. Right now she is fasting and in prayer for change, but I told her that I would have to take her out for being so nice when she can eat. I was upset the earlier because I was ... read more

Again I woke up once during the night, with one stool movement. I slept through the rest of the night. Just one stool for the morning, which was solid, but broke up into small pieces in the water. I was then very weak all morning. I got a referral letter from Mnazi Moja Hospital and was told to go for a full blood picture and blood glucose tests. Initially I went to the labs at Mnazi Moja, but I was very unimpressed with the cleanliness, some of the blood samples seemed to be taken using just a sterile lancet and a non-sterile mouth pipette. So I went to Al-Rahma Hospital for the tests, I added a malaria test as well. The malaria test was negative, and the other two were normal. I then arranged to travel ... read more
