I'm so proud of myself. As hard as it is, I've been hitting the gym like 4-5 times a week since I joined about 2 weeks ago. Mind you, this is my first time working out since August when I got sick with Graves disease. All the muscle I loss is finally returning. I had gotten so weak it was hard to walk stairs, I'd say I'm about 90% back. The next problem is where to find more medicine here. I'll run out within the next 2 weeks, but I still have over a month before I return home. Hmmm!... read more

Apologies for the mammoth entry but we've seen so much in such a short space of time so we'll skip to the highlights and try not to ramble on too much. On Sunday we drove out from Kenya to Arusha in Tanzania and on Monday started our journey in 4x4's into the Serengeti via the rim of the Ngorongoro crater so named for the noise the cowbells of the Maasai's cattle make. There are 51,000 Maasai in the conservation area and we saw loads of Maasai villages and the Maasai themselves along the way. We entered the Serengeti past a very dry lake Manyara and the Oldoinyo Lengai Mountain which is the Maasai's God. First spot into the Serengeti was a pregnant hyena which stank like pure evil. We spotted loads of animals: Zebras, Giraffes, herds ... read more

Tuesday 15th February Harriet had asked us before whether we wanted to go to the mnada earlier in the day and cut our Akie visit short, but we had declined as we were not particularly interested in seeing the animal slaughter which was taking place in the morning. We would miss some of the commerce and most of the cattle and goat selling, but the Akie visit more than made up for that. There would still be lots going on at the market in the afternoon and Harriet especially wanted us to eat some goat meat which could be bought and to meet a friend of hers called Mr Moita, who, although he is not old in years, is a Maasai elder and would show us around the market. Mr Moita spotted us immediately when we ... read more

I just came from a exhibition hosted by the German-Tanzania Society GTS. the story there is funny. I'm writing about it on travelblog now. Of all the qualified speakers in the audience the MC chose me to get up an be the auctioneer. Now mind you, the closest I've ever been to an auction was ebay and he had me auctioning off several items as a fundraiser for GTS. When Poni introduced me to him, right away he started calling me Doctor Tara. He even stood in front of the luncheon announcing "If anyone is sick, there is a doctor in the house who can take care of all emergencies." And I'm thinking that's great, I sure would like to meet 'em. And here he was talking about me. Everytime he passed the table he told ... read more

The wedding was last night finally. We had been talking about it for a week. And a wedding it was. They started at 3:00 at the church and then caravan'd around the beach and city center taking pictures of the wedding party at each stop. The procession was led by the brass band who played from the church to the last stop.... The reception. The reception was awesome. What I was told was that the groom was from a somewhat wealthy family and he's father had worked with the State House. So the reception was held there outside with tents covering the tables where the food was served. The dresses and attire of the party and guess were largely Western-like. Though ceremony itself has a lot tradition and formality to it. We had problems with transportation ... read more

Today was marked by the return of bad diarrhoea, evidently my digestion system cannot take pilau now. My night was disrupted heavily, waking up every hour or two for further diarrhoea. This left me tired and weak. I went to see Dr Otito again, and also arranged to see an ear specialist in the afternoon, to sort out my ears. On the way back, the heat made me dehydrated again, and I was not able to eat any lunch. The ear specialist cleaned my ears, and gave me some drops, but said I was able to fly. I went back to the house by taxi again. I managed to eat a little in the evening. ... read more

Having had the return of both bad faeces (probably technically not diarrhoea) and earache, I had decided it was time to see the Doctor again. When we got to the hospital, the Doctor was not there, so we were going to Patrick's office. On the way we spotted a familiar face. Emmanuel Mungongo, my Kiswahili teacher from Britain. He had been in Moshi - near Kilimanjaro, his home town, but I think he had returned to Dar the same day I had arrived. I had not seen him though until today. It was very good to see him, and I most of the rest of the day with him. He is staying in the YMCA and I ate my lunch there after trying to change some travelers cheques, but failing. The banks here as are not ... read more

We went to visit Dar Es Salaam university first thing in the morning, to sort out something for Patrick's job. Patrick is a self-employed accountant/auditor (which gives him flexibility useful to fit in hospital visits etc). We went to the University because Patrick was supposed to be teaching a class on some accounting software, for three days, but the lecturers had not phoned. We went to the head of department, a nice guy who had studied in Southampton, and took an interest in me and what I am doing. This is a trait I see often, and I have been made to feel very welcome here in Tanzania because of it. Sadly, some form of mess up had been made, and someone else had been brought in to teach accounting software, but three different packages, in ... read more

Being Sunday, today I went to church with Patrick and his family. The service was early, starting at 8:30, although that is not at all unusual here. Patrick and his family are Pentacostal, so it was a very different service from the Anglican ones on Zanzibar, and it was also actually in English. (They have a Kiswahili service later) Yay! It was only my second English service since leaving the UK. In some ways it was more similar to StAG back in the UK, but I would place StAG roughly between the Cathedral and Patrick’s church. Although the sermon was more similar (with the exception of regular amens from the congregation), the worship style was a little different, was about 40 minutes of just worship to begin the service, although the use of guitar, keyboard, drums ... read more

I didn’t go into the city centre today. Again a day of rest, with more use of Patrick’s computer, helping him install some more games. Patrick actually had to work for some of the time even though it is a Saturday, and went into the office for the morning. He came back by the afternoon, and took some more pictures on my camera. In the evening I walked with Patrick to the market at Ubungo, about 1km away from the house, to buy some pineapples and bananas. A bit different from the market on Zanzibar, less formally laid out, and a very different feel as it was dark (I was careful and with Patrick). Everything was lit with paraffin lamps. I went back to the house using a daladala. The daladalas here are different from those ... read more
