It was midnight when we crossed the border from Kenya to Tanzania on the overnight bus. And since buses aren’t allowed to drive at night in Tanzania, the driver pulled over in the first town and everyone slept for six hours; we curled up on the bus seats while others made beds of cardboard and sprawled out on the sidewalk til the sun came up and we could continue. Late in the morning we arrived in Dar es Salaam—tired, sweaty, and relieved to be off the mostly unpaved road after a full 24 hours of travel from Kenya. Though Dodoma holds the official title, Dar is Tanzania’s economic and political capital, and the country’s biggest city. Among travelers it’s known for being uninteresting in relation to other East African cities—most people use it as a stop-over ... read more

just taking it easy today. went shopping with two other danish girls. they are very nice but leaving on tuesday. shopping involves finding a local "market" then going from stall to stall trying to get the best price and finding the product that you want. a lot of them sell the same thing. coke and juices and maybe flour or something while others sell mangos and bananas and others just sell junk. you have to know what you want before you go shopping. also, i found a place to volunteer. the sme two danish girls took me there yesterday for their last day. its a "school/shelter" that takes in street children and tries to get them ready for regular school and tries to find school fees for them. maybe 20 or so students there at the ... read more

After a superb Ethiopian Meal at Addis in Dar in Dar es Salaam, we took the ferry the next day to Stone Town, Zanzibar. Stone Town has a interesting culture with a mix of Persian, Arabic, Indian and Bantu influences. To this day, one can see the influences in the exquisitely carved doors of most Zanzibari homes. Zanzibar was a city state until the 16th century with key trade links between Africa and Asia. After being a Portuguese colony briefly, it was ruled by the Omani Sultans until 1963. It then was joined with Tanganyika to form Tanzania. To this day, many locals consider themselves Zanzibaris and not Tanzanians. Stone Town is a beautiful town on the south west coast of Zanzibar main island. The narrow, labyrinthe alleways reminded us of Morocco. Alison had her fill ... read more

The spice tour was great. We visited plantations and local villages that had spices growing in the backyard. We saw how curry was grown, cinnimon, cardamom, vanilla, ginger, coffee, and more. After the tour and march throught the fields we were taken to a village for lunch. we were seated on the floor in groups of five and fed delicous coconut curry fish, jasmine rice, chapati and local spinach peanut combo. When I saw food is delicious I mean better than normal. Most of Africa is not known for its delicacies. In fact most of the time its down right grim. Rice and beans or ugali and beans. For my faithful readers, ugali is the same as Malawi's 'nsima', or Zimbabwe's 'sadza' mazie gground up to make some sort of paste. its not delicious. But I'm ... read more

After my not so safe experience with the 1st tour company for a 2 day Safari, I decided I definitely didn't want to go up the mountain with them for 5 days. So I went to the company I originally planned to go up with and we sat down the morning I was supposed to climb and to plan my trip up. I was hoping that I could be added to a group that was already going up to save money, but they didn't have any others. I explained to the owner, who I call 'Big brother' that he had to send me up with safety as a priority. That was no problem for him so called up a guide with 6 years of experience as a guide and 2 porters and a cook. The basics ... read more

made it safe. the flight was real long but real cool flying over africa. hit the nile in sudan followed that for awhile. then just about over mt. kenya and Kilimanjaro (but it was dark by that point). landed in Kenya for about 45 min then on to dar. by that point the plane was real empty. Swissair is pretty good but virgin has a much better movie selection and options. they fed us a lot though. i got off the plane and noticed the heat and a smell right away. no problems getting into the country. got ripped off on the taxi ride over. they charged me $25. some guy came right up to me. i just said yea, lets go. little bit of trouble getting into the ms house (the lady forgot to put ... read more

We drove back to a clearing of plains where the toilets were and ran into a group of Masai herdsmen on the way back to the truck. I am not sure how they feel about us, but I get the strangest feelings around them. It's weird how they aggressively come up to you asking you to take pictures of them or with them. Over time, with so many tourists taken unwanted pictures of them, they've adapted and now spend a good bit of time accommodating and even invited tourists. who can blame them though. Being pushed steadily from the land they called home for centuries further and further over time by the govenrment in an effort to preserve and use their land as 'national parks' for tourists to gather. It seems natural that they'd have ... read more

We woke this morning to the most spectacular sunrise over the crater rim. It was awesome! My tent sleeping, rocky as it was, was adequate enough for me to be easily aroused when the others campers starting awking a oohing-and ahhing to the view of the sky. We also looked out to find our guide with 3 other men pucking our truck which had obviously broken down AGAIN! The girls and I just sighed, went to breakfast and HOPED that our truck would be okay to take us into the crater that morning. SAFARI LESSON #1- Safety first!!!- Sometimes you can haggle to get a low price for a trip, but realize you may be compromising and getting a less than safe vehicle for this long journey! Luckily, by the time we finished and walked around ... read more

Monday Morning- YMCA canteen My new friends and I had breakfast at the Y this morning and excitedly talked about how nice our trip would be. We hoped that since it took so much time and energy to plan that it would pay off in a great Safari trip. The problem that most people encounter with safaris is that the animals don't make the same plans to see YOU! So you may or may not see as many depending on weather, dry season and migration. But anyhow, we were amped and ready to see the BIG FIVE. (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, and Buffalo) We started out our day late, with much preparation at the Safari Co. office. We had to pay our balance and wait while they packed equipment, shopped for food and picked up the ... read more
