Jambo rafikis! Day 34 - (To catch up on last time - we are at a project called CCF in Arusha which is an orphanage, helping them to make a vegetable garden) Today, at placement, we were asked to fertilise the soil - with manure (chicken shit and cow dung). Wasn't exactly into that but it only entailed shovelling it into a bucket and chucking it on the soil and then mixing it in with a spade so wasn't too disgusting... But the thought of spending the day LITERALLY shovelling shit is enough to turn any stomach. Day 35 - Halfway through my African adventure! Today we began creating another vegetable patch for the orphanage - yay, more digging... In the boiling sun this was not fun! Day 36 - Today we dug 400 holes into ... read more

So far the trip has been great with only a few problems. However, this is my turn to complain. if you dont want to hear them stop reading. 1. poor and muddy roads 2. lots of rain. no more beach trips 3. worrying about being robbed 4. poor public transport esp. at night 5. taxis that try and rip you off 6. now living a bit far from everything (esp. with regards to going out at night, see #4 and #5.) (and lack of night time activities other than the local bar) 7. being mzungu and standing out big time 8. not understanding all the swahili 9. lack of american foods (finally starting to catch up with me) 10. going into places that dont have change for a 10,000 note (less than ten dollars) i guess ... read more

in dar, for the passed three days straight rain, except for a bit yesterday morning. the rainy season is still upon us. also a bit chilly compared to what it has been. 2. most of the boys (although sadly not the girls) are in school at least part of the day now. while this is good for them, it makes the day slightly more boring. more time to study swahili or surf the internet. 3. i sent out a bunch of emails trying to set up meetings with ngos to talk about their history. hopefully i get some responses. 4. the hills outside of moshi (in the north maybe 250?? km from kenya). very chilly. needed to wear a light jacket in the evening and morning. bananas bananas bananas everywhere. cooking bananas mostly. everywhere banana trees. ... read more

My mom defied her every instinct and flew a million miles around the world to see us in Africa. That’s not exactly fair, of course, because her instincts told her very strongly that she wanted to see us (preferably back in the US, but short of that, she’d settle for Africa). What made her hesitate were her instincts about endless hours of air travel, not to mention the backdrop of harrowing famine and stubborn poverty in East Africa. One thing you must know about my mom is that her heart is so good, and so real, and so connected to others around the world, that she just didn’t think she could take a relatively lavish tour around Tanzania in the context of so many hungry and needy people. But we convinced her in the end, partly ... read more

taking the children to the beach tomorrow. i did a bit of running around getting water and juice from the places where you can buy 100 waters and 50 juices. this beach trip is a gift from the volunteers, costing us about 15,000 each (though probably less) and the children really like it. we pay for the transport (35,000), food, and for a few toys to use at the beach. it should be a good day. henning, the german volunteer, took the children there on christmas eve and said they really like it. meatte one of the danish girls just got back from zanzibar and had a great time. i'm thinking about getting in touch with usaid and other development agencies and seeing whats going on in development and with tanzania. i was teaching two past ... read more

This is what Tanzania looks like when you get your cameras and valuables stolen the day after you arrive in the country. We arrived in Dar last Wednesday already missing South Africa, but looking forward to some new experiences in Tanzania. We had no definite plans, only the cell phone number of Nick's friend from grad school, Emmanuel, and the name of a hotel plucked off one of the internet travel sites at the last minute. Things immediately looked to be going our way - we phoned and booked a room from the airport, and after settling in at the Jambo Inn Hotel we were referred to a tour agent next door about planning a camping safari to Ngorongoro and Serengeti National parks. The following day, however, just as we were planning to head out to ... read more

Had two great flights on Precision Air....first from Zanzibar to Dar and then on to Kilimanjaro Airport up north. Funny thing was my flight to Dar was a bit late due to weather so upon arrival, there were Precision Air employees holding signs with my name who then rushed me through the airport and out onto the tarmac to get onto the connecting flight to Kilimanjaro Airport. It was the first time in a while I have seen someone in an airport with my name on a card. Upon arriving at the Kilimanjaro Airport, I took a cab to Arusha (which is about a 40 minute drive). I got a room at the Flamingo Hotel (lonely planet recommended) for $10 per night (my own bathroom and shower with hot water). I immediately set off to town ... read more

Just got back from Bewjuu (a town on Zanzibar island) this afternoon. We left Stone Town yestereday morning and drove to Jezani Forest. We first had a little info session on the forest and the conservation of it. Then we walked a little bit to an area that usually has Zanzibar Red Backed Colobus Monkeys. There were quite a few of them and they were sooooooo cute! =). There were babies jumping from branch to branch pretty much at eye level. Some monkeys even used Gabi's head as a go between. After that we went for a walk through the forest. It was soooo beautiful! Some of the trail got pretty muddy and it was intertaining to see how everyone's shoes looked like at the end=). The trees were so amazing. Took lots of pictures, so ... read more
