I thought since we were going to be talking and letting you in on our lives that it would be nice to introduce our family. A lot of you know Anthony and I - maybe even Joshua, but as for the rest of the family you may not know them. We'll start with the parents. Anthony and I are very fortunate to have parents who even though they stressed out about us leaving and moving to Africa and taking their grandson - have been very supportive and wonderful about our decision. Anthony's parents, Walter and Jean Brown moved from living in the city in Nashville to living in the country in Hickman County Tennessee. Farm life was second nature to Anthony's dad, who along with his sister Nola, was featured in a farming magazine when they ... read more

I decided to go for a walk outside the hotel. The sun was pounding down, and the air hot and sticky. The streets were crowded with people buying and selling a variety of things from fresh fruit to strappy sandals. I saw a small stall selling sugar cane - yes please, I will take two. I put on in my pocked and ate the other. The one in my pocket was a bit too long and protruded by about half its length. My phone, normally clipped to my belt at the back, was not attached at the front as a basic security measure since I was walking through heavy crowds. I was in a thick crowd of people, walking through the market. And then it happened. It was slightly confusing at first, as a man ... read more

Touts: Wow, what a difference Tanzania has been compared to the rest of the African countries. Touts, touts and more touts. For those of you who don't know, a tout is a guy on the street who approaches you trying to sell you tours, boat tickets, bus tickets, prostitutes, drugs, or any other item that he thinks you are willing to buy...It started as soon as we made it to the river separating Tanzania and Mozambique, when, as Jas described, the owners of the boats fought each other over which one of them was going to take us across and try and rip us off (this is inevitable). In Dar Es Salaam we constantly had at least two or three 'tour' operators waiting outside our hotel to see if we wanted to buy a tour. One ... read more

What a long day. It started in Bangkok yesterday when I boarded my flight to Singapore. A four hour wait, and some excellent electronics shopping (including an underwater case for my IPOD Nano!) and I boarded the long flight to Joburg. It was a treat though with lie-flat beds and in-seat power for my laptop so I could get in a few episodes of ALIAS before I fell asleep for the rest of he flight. Arriving in Joburg was strange because I had not been to SA in such a long time (normally I am there every few months). But more strange than that was going back through passport control to catch a flight out of Joburg to somewhere other than London! The flight do Dar Es Salam was smooth and they served smoked Marlin as ... read more

We arrived in Zanzibar in the late afternoon on Thursday, July 6th. Ryan's connections with the chef at Chef's Pride, in Dar had arranged for us to be picked up from the port and directed to a nice hotel in the middle of Stone Town called the Pyramid Hotel. After checking in we explored the area, and ate a late lunch. Later in the evening we checked out the fish markets which had an assortment of fish, octopus, squid, crab, lobster and much more that had been caught fresh that day and was cooked right in front of you. Early the next morning we caught a 2 hour bus up to Kwenda to relax for a few days on the beaches and wait for the arrival of Jord and his mom. (Jordan Blanchet is also a ... read more

In addition to all of the other amazing things I've had the chance to do on this trip, yesterday I was lucky enough to go on Safari!!! We went to the Ngorongoro Crater, which is right next to the Serenghetti and about a 5 hour drive from where we're staying in Moshi. 9 people from our group went, and we woke up at 5 to get on the road early. Once in the park, we were struck by the diversity of the land - sometimes seeming like a rainforest, and other times a grassland. The crater itself is the caldera of an old volcano and is about 20 km across. The sides of the crater are incredibly steep, and our 4-wheel drive van bounced around like crazy while we went through the switchbacks. Inside the giant ... read more

Arriving in Dar Es Salaam, I withdrew some 100,000 shillings from the nearest bank machine which is about $100 Canadian and hopped in a taxi for Holiday Hotel, where I was to meet Jas and Ryan. Although from the outside the hotel looked like shit, it was not too bad indoors, and had a nice roof, from which you could look over the city top and drink a few beers. Jas (Jason Lush) is a friend from my years at BCIT and Ryan is a friend of Jas and Jord (Jordan Blanchet). We'll be catching up with Jord later on Zanzibar. Jas, Ryan and myself just relaxed on the roof and drank a few beers and then headed for dinner. Dinner was amazing, and very cheap ($3 for a full course meal), it was well cooked ... read more

This will be short since this computer's moving slowly and I've got to get out of the internet cafe soon! First, thanks to everyone for the messages. It's been good to hear from you all! I just returned from two days in the Marangu region of Tanzania, on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Our group stayed in a swank resort thing (which was a bit awkward: pedicured lawns, hot showers, tv, etc.) where we each had small huts to share with another person. There are more banana trees than I know what to do with in the area! And also, lots of cool birds - we've seen lots of Hornbills, and other things we can't identify. We spent our days visiting small coffee farmers who grow coffee for KNCU. They each sell their coffee through a ... read more

Dar Es Salaam (Haven of Peace) turned out to be more of a Haven for errands, food, Internet, comfortable beds and cold beer. Arriving late Canada day and enduring a long bus ride fraught with bumps, traffic and bad stomach problems from the chipsi mayai. Chipsi mayai is a dish that amounts to basically a pile of fries in a pot with a few eggs cracked into it until you get an omletteish type dish. I really enjoyed it the first time, but then caving to buy one from a roadside vendor on the way north I quickly realized there was a big difference in quality and my body has been in pain ever since. Thankfully my morning diet of several mangoes and half a bunch of bananas has helped quell things to some degree. We ... read more

How do you pack for 10 years? Anyone? The container carrying everything we own except for what is in 4 suitcases, leaves port here in the US and heads across the ocean to somewhere near lower Europe, then docks; either unloads and reloads to another ship, or the boat just refuels to continue the jouney to Africa. It will take approximately 6 weeks to physically get there. Then it must go through the customs and clearing agents hands before it can leave the docks and head to our new home. This could take weeks. The most recent container left America in the middle of Jan and did not arrive to it’s final destination until the END OF MAY!!!!! 4 and 1/2 months!!!!!! So - having said that, I must pack my 4, 50 pound suitcases wisely, ... read more
