Well I just wrote a beautiful blog message and just as i was going to send it over the satelite waves, my computer shut down and i lost it. ugh. i will say quickly what i wanted to say in a more more eloquent way. i cant provide pictures at this time due to the slow internet, though i will look around for faster internet. i am not taking pictures anyway outside of my dorm because the camera i have now is an expensive video camera and theft is possible, frequent, and i dont want to risk it. i will wait until i get my regular camera sent to me. i apologize. on food, i wake up in the morning and walk 20 minutes to the administration buildings where there is a lovely outdoor cafe. i ... read more

well the second half was deleted thanks to the limit i was unaware of on travelblog.com. rather than go on and on about the village museum (Which i would welcome a discussion about from other travellers who may have visited this very tourist site), just know that i miss everyone at home. i need to work on my swahili much more, and that i am keeping up on the news from the wonderful national english newspaper here, This Day. It is disheartening to hear about what is going on in the middle east and i hope that the immediate crisis can be solved quickly. take care. kwa heri.... read more

Preface It has been too long since I added another chapter to this blog. My excuse is that I have been burdened with work and writing presents another labour. Not to mention Iran blocking travelblog.org! This is likely my last entry from Tanzania 2006 and fills the gap between Zanzibar and Tanganyika. The three short journals are but fragments of my experience and there is more that could be told but there is more travel to be done. The bit in-between Leaving Amani, I found myself on the same buses on which I had come: Ndio Zetu to Muheza and then Tayassar to Chalinze. Here the bus turned left towards Dar es Salaam and the driver made an impromptu stop for me to jump off. After a quick lunch, I boarded a no-name minibus to Morogoro. ... read more

It's been awhile since my last update! After spending the last couple days in Zanzibar basically just waiting to leave and coming up with an excuse to celebrate (and drink) we then boarded our ferry back to Dar Es Salaam. The ferry left at 9 pm at night, but when we got there an hour before departure it was sold out. Thankfully there was another ferry, and even cheaper that left at 10pm. We initially dreaded that boat ride, but for no good reason -since it turns out the tourist price buys you access to the first class lounge. Hence, we spent the night fearing for our lives and hoping the boat wouldn't sink, yet also in bliss with couches and televisions everywhere. It turns out I slept quite well and when we woke up in ... read more

Helaas ... read more

Well, Sunday night after finishing up my last entry on this page, we packed up and got ready to hit the ferries back to the mainland of Tanzania. The ferry was to leave at 10pm, and all of us were exhausted and hungover from the previous night of festivities. Arriving at the ferry terminal we got our passports checked and boarded. Shown to the first class section, which is not much of a first class, it had pillows on the couches which smelled like a mixture of piss and puke. Wrapping my face in my sweater I stretched out along the couch and passed out. Somtime during my sleep the ferry departed and went along its way to the port in Dar Es Salaam. After 8 hours of sleeping and boat cruising, we arrived at our ... read more

Cool, Crazy, Like a Banana in the Fridge So I have a theory... And it's that you can tell a lot about a nation of people by how they greet each other. For example: Australian: Q: "How you going?" A: Good, thanks! (Even though in the literal sense it could be claimed that our answer should be "By Car" or "Fast") British: Q: "You Allright?" A. Yes, thank you. (Even though every time I get asked this my initial reaction is to say - "Yes, I'm fine - does it not look like I'm allright!?" - eg Is my head falling off or something?) East African Q: "Mambo!?" A. Poa Poa. Poa Kichizi, Kaman Dizi, Dan Ya Frigi So arguably, Aussie's passion for sport has gone so far that our greeting uses a verb relating ... read more

Driving into Ngorongoro crater is unlike anything else in the world. I often joke that Ngorongoro is really more like a zoo than a nature reserve but when we crested the crater wall and looked down into the crater I felt chastised -- it is one of the most glorious and stunning pieces of land in the world, without question. The crater is something like 20 miles across and when you are in the middle you can see the crater wall towering above you on all sides - it is quite an experience. Ngornogoro is exactly how I have always imagined the Garden of Eden - towering walls, lakes, forest and savannah and, of course, animals abound. And after all, isn’t Ngorongoro just a few miles away from the oldest fossil footprints in the world.. perhaps ... read more

I have arrived at the university of dar es salaam. it is beautiful, i am living in a dormroom on the fifth floor of one of the halls with a perfect personal porch that i see now will act as a wonderful refuge. there is a monkey (a baboon) outside of the window right now from the internet center near my dorm. i have been watching all the monkeys and cats on campus. they have such personality! scratching...much like the squirrels i adore back in new york. cats with one eyes, nobody likes them but i love to watch them from my little porch. the group of us, ten americans, went into dar yesterday. its farther from the university than i thought. it took about 50 minutes on the dalla dalla, the small busses that take ... read more
