Day 26 (June 16) - Kibo Hut Today was the hardest hike yet - 4.5hrs up to 4700m (15,000ft). We hiked another hour up the mountain to acclimatize, and I had a very bad headache. We ate around 6pm and went to bed at 7pm. Wake-up call at 11:30pm... Day 27 (June 17) - Horombo Hut We were woken up for coffee at 11:30pm, and we were on our way to the peak around 12:20am. Our goal was to make the 6.5hr hike to the summit in time for sunrise. It was rough. Very cold, and my head was killing me. But I was all there in the head, so no worries. Took some Advil and head was cured, but I felt terribly sick. Anyway, we made it! Day 28 (June 18) - Arusha Hiked down ... read more

We took an 8am shuttle from Nairobi to Arusha, Tanzania, which is about 2hrs from Mt. Kilimanjaro main gate. We met up with Dave and Allison on the bus and caught up. They'd been in Africa for 10 days already (South Africa and Kenya). I had to get another visa at the border (I was the only one on the bus who didn't already have one). Again, no problem - big relief. I had driven to DC the week before I left but I didn't have sufficient documentation to get one... We arrived in Arusha around 1pm and met up with our tour operator. They had organized our climb, safari, flights and hotels in Tanzania. Tad spent an hour on the phone trying to get his bag situation resolved but things were still up in the ... read more

Al snel komen we heel veel dieren ... read more

Luckily we quickly found a truck complete with a great bunch of guys to take us from Cape Town up through Namibia, we decided to do things in style and armed with our pillows, duvet and large box of fine SA wine we set off....After shivering in Cape Town (see its not all beach weather you know!)we soon got to baking hot, barren and empty Namibia which really was like being on another planet. Our first major place was a the huge Fish River Canyon where after a stroll around we tucked into fine food and mugs of sherry! We ended up staying in the town where Brad and Angelina where having their baby, but we were disappointed that they didnt accept our offer of afternoon tea - some people hey? As we ventured north, out ... read more

the lake is really nice although no swimming in it. polluted with some disease thing that lays eggs in your liver. or something like that. went to an island with a zoo consisting of a caged lion or a flock of impla roaming around the little island. it was nice but also kind of weird that there werent any other people there (except for the zoo keeper). real pretty . the zoo took up about 1/8 of the island and the rest was just wilderness (grass and a few trees and a lot of rocks) with a path to guide you around. met some dutch guys we knew from dar (we met them two months ago then they came out here). they work in a rural hospital here which we went around. it was ok, although ... read more
