I'm in Zanzibar, Tanzania now! We left Mombasa on Mon. at 8 in the morning and had about an 11 hour bus ride to Dar es Salaam. The ride really wasn't that bad and for the most part the roads were pretty good. We had been planing to go clubbing our one night in Dar, but nothing was open Mon. night, so we just ended up sleeping. The following morning we had to just explore the city. It was pretty fun just walking around Dar. The city is so much cleaner than Mombasa. It's definetely a city that if I get the chance I want to come back to and spend some time here. People are very nice. Although one of us did have a bad run in with some guys: Of course the story is ... read more

I got off the train. And was approached by some one offering a taxi ride. I had a rough idea of the price, but wasn’t exactly sure how much. 15000 Shillings was the first price I was given. I said that I had been told it was 5000. They said okay then 12. This was going to be a hard bargaining process. Next I said that I had heard that the price was 5 and that I was not prepared to pay more than 5. They reduced the price to 10 I walked off, at which point they started to follow, confirming the fact they were trying to over charge me. I offered 6 The guy said that the place I was trying to get to was over 5 km away. My reply to this was ... read more

Once again united, the girls and I took the ferry to Zanzibar. They of course sat inside to enjoy the air conditioning while I stood on the back deck of the boat taking in the scene of the blue water of the Indian Ocean. It was a great two hour ride that landed us in Stone Town, the legendary trading center of Zanzibar. It did not take us long to find a suitable guest house (Annex Abdullah). The girls decided to rest a bit so I headed out to explore the narrow alleys and ancient buildings that makes up this exotic location. I decended upon the large outdoor market and found myself immersed in spice vendors and old ladies hawking fresh fruits. After a few hours of strolling, I found myself on the west side of ... read more

The girls left Lake Malawi a day ahead of me so I took off by myself to cross the border to Tanzania. The boat that took me from Mayoka Village to the town was a bit late so I had to pay a Mini Bus driver a few extra dollars to leave the bay area with his bus only 60% full (they do not leave a station until they have filled their van). I did this so I could get to Mzuzu sooner vs. later because I had to get another minibus from Mzuzu to the border (which closes at 5pm). In Mzuzu, I jumped into a mini bus which was packed in with what felt like 80 people. After 3.5 hours, we made it to a small town where I had to switch to another ... read more

When I was a kid I remember that my mum had lots of interesting spices in her larder and occasionally, when my hunt for Wagon Wheels proved fruitless, I would pick up the spices and give them a good old sniff. in particular I remember there being a box of cloves in an old green box. On the box was a painting of an exotic island with a dhow boat sailing pat. It sticks in my mind because it also had a rather freaky picture of a sultan on it. The island was Zanzibar, the spice island, and it was Zanzibar that Kim and I found ourselves heading towards on a ferry from the mainland of Tanzania. Stone Town, the capital has probably changed very little over the last 100 years. The slave traders and spice ... read more

Some people say that when it comes to Africa, the only positive thing to sy about it is the animals, so to help test the theory we went on safari, and safari and safari. Heading back into Kenya from Uganda we visited Lake Nakuru National Park in the Rift Valley. Flamingos filled the salt lake in their thousands and we were lucky enough to see elephants, baboons, zebra, pelicans, worthog, waterbuck, bush pigs, giraffe, impalas and rhino just on our first day. We bushed camped in the middle of the park at night surrounded by a colony of baboons. Just as we were going to bed I shone our flashlight into the darkness of the bush. The eyes of a few hyenas reflected back at me. In the middle of the night the hyenas moved into ... read more

Jambo (hello in Swahili)! It has been awhile since our last blog and so this one will be a long one. So much has happened since we landed in Nairobi March 11th. Nairobi We flew Kenya Airways from Cairo to Nairobi and we had very low expectations for the airline, but it was fine. The flight was not very full apart from the Zimbabwean Police/UN Peacekeepers on the flight. We were again staying at the Hilton (on points) and we were lucky enough to check in at 6 am. We had a zillion errands to run and after a quick sleep, we got everything done. Nairobi is often called Nairobbery, but we really didn't see anything that seemed any different from any other city. We immediately noticed that Africa had more of a Western influence than ... read more

i was invited to a birthday party today for a guy at work so i'm going there. thats starts around 5 or 6 so i need to leave around 430 and still have to go to the grocery store to get some beer or soda for the party. last night i went out with the three danish girls that i work with, another danish girl, two swedish guys and an african guy from school who got himself invited (despite my wishes because he doesnt pay for anything ((mostly because he cant but still wants to hang out) and i think that spending all day with him is quite enough time. it was fun although towards the end there were many prostitutes in the place so it was kinda gross. the swedish guys just arrived thursday at ... read more

made it to arusha. about 10 hours in the bus. 12 hours total travel time. long day. saw mt. kilamingaro on the way for awhile. it dominated over the landscape. paid $300 for three full days and 2 nights on safari. a sunrise drive is also included. one night in a lodge and one night in a tent in the park. not going to the saragenti but other parks in the area including a crator one. it is a big expense but that seems to be the going rate. meals, lodging, and everything is included in the price so that is good. arusha is nice; cooler than dar--which is very good. only a few degress but a big few degrees. just kind of killing the day today. found a safari--the people attack you and try to ... read more

went to the beach on sunday with the three swedish people...they are really nice and good to hang out with....to get to the beach which i could not find you take: the daladala (20 cents) followed by a ferry to the other side of the bay (12 cents) followed by either another daladala (20 cents) or taxi ride ($3 divided by the number of people so four)....then you pay for a little hut/shelter thing ($2) and then you have a nearly deserted beach on the indian ocean....warm was warm but still nice....came back and watched the finnish-swedish hockey game...maria, one of the swedes, was very excited the other two not a big deal. on monday started teaching english. they just threw me into a class of about 12 with another "teacher" to translate into swahili. days ... read more
