went to the beach on sunday with the three swedish people...they are really nice and good to hang out with....to get to the beach which i could not find you take: the daladala (20 cents) followed by a ferry to the other side of the bay (12 cents) followed by either another daladala (20 cents) or taxi ride ($3 divided by the number of people so four)....then you pay for a little hut/shelter thing ($2) and then you have a nearly deserted beach on the indian ocean....warm was warm but still nice....came back and watched the finnish-swedish hockey game...maria, one of the swedes, was very excited the other two not a big deal.
on monday started teaching english. they just threw me into a class of about 12 with another "teacher" to translate into swahili. days and months is what we are currently working on and basic adjectives. had some boiled "hot dogs" for dinner. not bad actually. no water at the house very bad. water finally returned when i got back today. i had a very cramped daladala ride to the volunteer place today. makes you miss the london transport system. least is fairly easy to get there. but off this main road going out of the city is a maize of other roads that must be impossible to figure out. i guess by roads i mean paths. thinking about going out for a hamburger now. actually fealing a bit hungry. at the volunteer place they feed you rice or some other type of product for lunch. you eat rice with your fingers of course. very rarely do they get meat. little bit cooler out today. one or two rain drops which is the most rain i've seen since i've been here. i guess mango season is almost over which is followed by orange season. people sell mangos everywhere! swahili learning is going slowly. most of the time i have no idea what people are saying. people say jambo you say sijambo back. someone says shikomoo (a greeting of respect) you say mirahaba. choka sana is very tired. simba (from the lion king) means lion. karibu means welcome. one of the guys at the volunteer place teaches me swahili for about a half hour every day so far and the kids like to help you out as well. oh yea, in the bay that you take the ferry accross to get to the beach, a ship was stuck on the sand. i guess the navigator messed up and it was finally removed today. i guess today is a informal swedish holiday were you eat pastry. they were making bread to but almond/sugar topping on as i was leaving. and the daladalas are crazy. the electricty problem is getting worse and i guess so is the famini in the east and in burundi which means there will be refuges into tanzania from there. and they say tanzania as tan ZAN ee a.
