I guess I am just trying this out again, after years of not using it. In a little over a week I'm heading out east to visit family and friends in Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City. I am going solo for about 3 weeks. My plan is to put this blog back into use and then use it on a future trip to Spain and Morocco in 2011.... read more

We stayed in Cairo for 3 or 4 days just getting ready to end our trip. It sounds funny, but its true. All of our old clothes, the ones we used for backpacking, had to go and we needed to find replacements and warm clothes for Europe. We also visited the Citadel and the famous Muhammad Ali mosque, the street of the tent makers and finally got to see the mass at the hanging church in coptic cairo. The previous time we had gone to coptic cairo we actaully visited a greek orthodox church, which we thought was the hanging church. We only found out after looking at a tourist pamflet with pictures and lables in english. So we had to go back to see this church. It was incredibly old (15c I think) and filled ... read more

was that; Egypt, though a very beautiful and truley stunning place, has recieved more visitors than anyother place on earth. They have long been trapping tourists, learning foreing languages and picking up weird accents to imitate. I guess, I don't hate egypt as a whole because I have met some incredible people who have been very kind and generous and most of all they haven't asked us for anything. In aswan, place I think is the hassel capital of the world, I met 3 people in 3 days who I could have hung out with for a week. These were local men, (women generally don't speak to foreigners unless its to ask for money) and they didn't stare at me or hiss or ask how many camels it would take to buy me. Aswan was beautiful, ... read more

To not say anything if you don't have anything nice to say. We are in Luxor, the apparent hassel capital of egypt. I'll give some highlights and maybe when I am less jaded and less pissed off I'll write more about our experineces. We went to Aswan via train, the train was ok and we had the entire compartment to our selves. It was a night train so we even got to sleep a little. Aswan was, by far, the place closest to hell that I have ever been. Nothing terribly wrong with it except its occupants. The nile is quite pretty down south. We hiked in the desert and booked a trip t Abu Simbel, very close to the sudanese border. Abu simbel was as touristy as it gets. But for very good reason, the ... read more

Alexandria wasn't everything we thought it would be, but it was enough to keep us occupied for a few hours. Early in the morning we headed out to Fort Qaitbey via an excellent orange juice stand. The fort was built some time in the 15th century, I think, they made it out of an ancient light house. If you look carefully you can see parts of the old stone work. After about 45 minutes of exloring the fort, about 300 bus loads of kids showed up and ruined the tranquil morning atmosphere, so we took off for the creepy catacombs of Kom Ahs-Shuqqafa. The catacombs were creepy but very interesting, unfortunatly cameras were forbidden. we descended a circular staircase, which led to the first floor of about 150 tombs and the sitting and dinning room for ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo March 19th 2006

Yesterday, our first full day in Egypt we met up with a friendly edmontonian and went walking in Islamic Cairo. As the guide book says, Islamic Cairo isn't anymore Islamic than the rest of Cairo except of course, coptic cairo. We visited old mosques (here women are aloud into some mosques) gateways, markets, toilets and of course restraunts (coffee houses). One of the incredibe things about Cairo is that it is safe I hope I haven't jinxed myself, but we walk a night, go to the bank, ride the subway and just generally forget we are on the same coninent as Africa. Infact I can say that it feels safer here than my 'hood in Vancouver. People are incredibly nice and welcoming, particularly the vendors and young men ;-) I've been groped a few times in ... read more

the mountain was incredible. after much to do, getting clothes washed, getting warmer clothes from the rental people (which in itself is an ordeal) and actaully getting to the base of the mountain...4 hours by matatu on terrible roads. Paul Haym your roads here in kenya didn't last. For those who don't know, my boss back home in Vancouver (unless I've been fired) is from Kenya. He tells me he was the greatest enginer kenya ever had. I persoally think he was the only enginer kenya ever had and after he left they did't bother replacing him. The roads in kenya are terrible, for a place that could just as easliy be a 2nd or even first world country. We stayed the first night in Nanyuki, where we met with our porter and chef. the altitude ... read more

the safari was awesome. but I say that everytime. The maasai mara is not a game park, but an area of land just north of the serengetti. It is not fenced and the animals wander freely. The land used to belong to the maasai people who are mainly pastoralists, but the government approached them and asked if they could relocate so that tourists can use the area as well. suprisingly they agreed (or were forced to) and today the villages of the maasai are near the mara but not in. the maasai take their cattle to the water sources in the evening and then allow them to grase where ever. On the way to the Maasai mara we saw goats, zebra, giraffe, cows and sheep. The first day we arrived around 4 pm and immedaitly went ... read more

we made it here, in relative comfort. T the morning we left for kenya we had asked to have our breakfast prepaired early... at 6:30 instead of 7 am. we arrived at 6:15 just to ensure it was all going according to plan. by 7:15 we deicded to leave our complimentary breakfast behind because it was taking forever to make 2 boiled eggs 2 pieces of plain white bread (not even toasted) and a banana and tea. we arrive at the bus terminal with some time to spare (about 5 minutes) so I grabbed a fantastic to go brekafsat for paul and I and we boarded the bus. lo and behold....... the bus left on time, even 10 seconds early. paul witnessed a crazed man talking about killing bush and praising saddam. we know he was ... read more
