I just got a cell phone today and added minutes so I can recieve calls for free and also SMS or text messages. There is a site online where you can send SMS to anywhere if you can't from your cellphone. Here is the number you would use if calling from the states. 1-255-0748-270-563. A lot of numbers I know. But if you decide to call use a good prepaid calling card especially for Africa. You can get like 50 minutes for $10. Here I put $10 on the phone and I can talk just under 20 minutes if I make the call. That's must be why most people have been asking me to call them! Hmmm! Anyway, I'm not afraid this number if you are wonder because how many people would play on my phone ... read more

Again I woke up during the night, but only once. Unusually I felt cold, in spite of the fact I was sweating. I was also a bit achy and tired. When I woke up I felt weak and achy. I had only a little appetite and some nausea, and felt tired and weak all morning. I got tested for malaria - again negative, with both pulse/heart rate and blood pressure normal. My insurance said I could not fly until they know exactly what is wrong with me, and suggested that I went to Dar Es Salaam for the better hospitals there. I think the hospitals on Zanzibar have done as much as they can do. Irritatingly my ear felt funny in the evening, suggesting some sort of infection, therefore preventing any flights. ... read more

We drove through the serengeti on the way to Ngorogoro crater and dropped off at the Oldupai Gorge. This is the spot where the earth has split opened revealing several levels, right down to the lava level. It was there that they discovered human footprints from 3.6 million years ago. The oldest known existance of man. They casted the footprints and created two casted replicas then preserved the orig. by covering them by rocks. The footprints were captured because the people were walking on lava which hardened and was covered over by ash and soil. They dug for the next couple of years in an effort to find human remains from this time period but had no luck. In Etheopia the bones of, Lucy, a 1 metre high woman were found in the great rift ... read more

Sadly I did not sleep very well at all, waking up every two hours or so. In the morning I also threw up, I think because I had drunk too much (I’m talking about water and ORS here). This was not drunk all at once, but when I woke each time I would drink, so I was not absorbing the water very quickly. I saw the Doctor in morning for a checkup - my blood pressure and heart rate were both normal. The Doctor had written a report, which I then faxed off to the insurers, as well as some information from me. I spent the rest of the day resting. ... read more

It is looking likely I will return to Britain for more sophisticated health care. Although lately I have not had any diarrhoea, I have become very weak, with headaches and general tiredness. My appetite is very poor. My heart rate has also been too high sometimes - although not all of the time. This could just be relating to the stress, or a sign of more serious problems, I am not taking any chances, and will return to find out the cause. I have now contacted my insurance to try to arrange my return, hopefully, once I am fully recovered I will be able to go out again. Your prayers would be appreciated. ... read more

I woke up with a headache. I had one bowel movement in the morning, which again was pretty normal. I went to the hospital (Mnazi Moja) fairly early, both to deliver a stool sample and also because I was not feeling at all well. It was actually some time before I saw a Doctor, as my normal Doctor had gone out of the hospital. I saw Dr Duchi though, who proved to be a very good Doctor. He said I was taking too many drugs, and told me to stop the loperamide as well as the Malarone. He also told me to drink less ORS. Although both my temperature and blood pressure were normal, my pulse was unsually high. He blamed this on anxiety caused by worrying too much, and told me to read my medical ... read more

our new driver seemed quite sober and was able to drive between the lines. We had a speedy game drive around lake manyara. It was a brief but nice visit and we spent some time watching the elephants for a while. We headed off to the serengeti and stopped at a rest centre to use the washroom. Just behind the washroom I noticed a few people standing and looking into the bushes. I took a closer look and saw that a lioness had just killed a giraffe and was eating it only 30 feet from where I was standing. It is very unusual for cats to be so close to where people are (for some reason they don't like us) and as a result there was no fence between the cat and I. I got ... read more

Zanzibar Revolution day seems to be an excuse for the government here to have a big parade which is shown on all the TV channels. It is now 42 years since they overthrew the Omani Sultanate. The poor Omani Arabs were stuck into dhows and sent back to Oman, it can't have been a comfortable journey, and they were not given enough water. The trouble did not stop there, with the property of some of the Indians confiscated as well. Previously Stone Town had housed all the rich, including all the Omani's who were the ruling and traditional landowning class, and well as the Indian merchants and bankers. The black working class (as well as poorer Indians) lived in Ng'ambo (the other side - now officially known as new town - which is also where I ... read more

No stool at all today, which is for me lately, highly unusual. It is related to the loperamide I am sure. I am still feeling a bit tired and weak though. Generally a quiet day, with no work due to Eid Al-Hajj. There are advantages to living in a country with two large religious groups, with an increase in national holidays. I am taking the opportunity to rest. I am reading a book on Zanzibari History, with a lot of details on their economics. Zanzibar has always had an international feel, due to the reliance on trade rather than production. It also was the reason for the British gradual increase in power. Reliance on trade rather than production means you need powerful allies, and as the British became the leading Indian Ocean power, so they gained ... read more

Well its nearly time. I am off to Tanzania on the 6th of February. Hopefully to set up a small resort on the coast just north of Dar es Salaam. I have sold my house, my business and nearly all my possessions. I want to set up a small resort that can offer clients, Scuba Diving, Safari, Deep sea Fishing and more importantly a cold beer. I have 2 good friends going with me Phil and Liz. They are Kitesurfing Instructors, which gives the resort something more to offer. As per usual I am having a last min panic to get everything done before I leave. But fingers crossed I will have it all done for the 6th Feb. ... read more
