Hello Calum 😊

Of the Thai islands I visited I recommend Koh Pha Ngan and Phukett and I dont recommend Koh Samui.
On Koh Pha Ngan me and my daughter shared a beach hut on a beach north of the island. It only cost 4 Euros per night for a hut with a double bed, bathroom and balcony right beside the beach. It wasnt overrun with tourists but there still were enough backpackers so we did not get lonely.
Phukett was not the terrible tourist trap I expected it to be. There is more than enough room for backpackers. Most of the package tourists are on private resorts so u dont see much of them. We stayed in Phukett town which is a typical Thai town but with all the things we Westerners like to have everyday such as good coffee, bakeries..... And there is a range of budget accomodation there for backpackers. Also it is easy to get the local bus from the day market in the town to many of the beaches.

I dont know much about diving because I never tried it. U could ask Ali to comment on this thread. He is a diving instructer so may know the good diving spots in Thaiiland.
Here is his profile link so u can send him a private message.

Well, if you are looking at long term stay and you got your instructor padi, you might want to check whether they are looking for instructors on liveaboards to Similan, best dives in Thailand!
