Not good news Stew - as awful as this sounds, maybe its the kick you both needed to make a lifestyle change. Postive from a negative, etc. etc. Reply to this

Hi, I'm 54, happily married to a non-travelor and going to quit my job in the next year. If I can travel by myself and enjoy, so can you. The moments I remember most are places and people I have experienced. My office life, while well-paid, has just been a blur compared to travel. Go! Reply to this

I had almost the opposite happen. I had my favourite job ever, my favourite house I've lived in and it was all taken away from me by circumstances totally beyond my control. I was a great worker and a great tennant, but it all changed very rapidly. It gave me the freedom to go traveling and totally enjoy life. I could have been devestated, but it also goes to show that no matter how much you try to control things, sometimes it's best to let go and enjoy. Reply to this

Hi, This is a reply to Stewfox (Message 90) on this particular chat. Yes, I am happily married to a wonderful guy who hates travel. It happens. But we stay in contact electronically and I will visit home. I am very fortunate that we are both in excellent health and want to travel before health, familly or financial problems arise. Mccann, thats great that you are in a relationship that allows you such freedom, still bet you wish he was there to share some of the moments with you? Don't blame you though for getting out there and doing what you want whilst you can. Reply to this

My husband and I are considering selling the house, car, and quitting our jobs to travel around Africa, New Zealand, and South East Asia. I'm 39, and although I feel that I need to make this leap, I also have a 13 year old son, with whom I share custody. My ex and I have a great friendship, so this will certainly help matters, and my husband and I would be arranging for my son to spend different "legs" of our travels with us, so at least I will see him every few months. I feel that I don't want to wait until several more years pass before I do this, as life is so uncertain and can change in a heartbeat. Part of my urgency has to do with the fact that I am in good health, and would probably find extensive travel of this sort (cheap, hostels, buses instead of planes) easier to do now, than when I'm a great deal older. Could certainly use some practical suggestions... Reply to this

Lolarun good idea get out there when you can, I am 31 and heading out in December, when you say practical suggestions you are not specific, so my reply may not be all that specific, however you can always message me😊, Id suggest that you simply can not do enough research and the internet is an amazingly useful tool, sites such as lonely planet and bootsnall have useful information and forums you can use to garner information and the forums here on travelblog, certainly look at fitfortravel its an NHS website and advises on all your injections and i would note you may be like me and not be able to get all your injections at your own doctors and may need to use a travel clinic and yellow fever for example is £45 for an injection and others cost more, with Asia and Africa you will need malaria protection and the are different tablets and different course to take depending on your time in specific areas. Then the are Visas like were you need them and were you dont and making sure you get them in plenty of time and the costs involved, for example Thailand offer a free £30 tourist visa on arrival and the is a 5oo Baht exit fee from Thailand, Russia you need a letter to confirm your stay and intent to travel and the visa is about £70 and you need it stamped both at the airport and also at a local tourist office...........so i would say that research research and more research is never too much hassle as it will stand you in good stead. Also you need to work out if you have more money and less time or less money and more time and this will affect how many flights and how much local busing you do and also you can decide if you want to get single tickets as you go or a round the world ticket and with round the world tickets comes the choice of which airline alliance and ticket do you pick?

However all the effort will be worth it to pursue your dream, anymore questions Lolarun and just message me id be happy to help as with my previous travels and current planning of my trip ive learnt a few bits an bobs along the way😊

Take care

You are absolutely doing the right thing!

I got the travel bug when I was 9 when I asked my parents if I could go with them to Heathrow to take some relatives who were flying off to Brazil where they lived at the time. As I watched all the 747's taking off, something just clicked inside - I just thought, "This will be me one day!". Didn't experience my first long-haul trip until I was 23 to Thailand (very old in today's terms, I'm 37 now). In the intrim took the 'Magic Bus' from Kings X to Crete at 15 with my 18yr old sister (how we persuaded our parents to let us do it I'll never know).

I've done some serious travelling on and off for the last 4 years covering six continents. Sold my house, gave up my job and just took off in 2003 blowing about 50 grand and it was worth every single penny. I'm back home now with no job or house but just feel I want to take off again. I have a deep dislike for London now and what it stands for and feel I just want to take off again.....on the next 747!

I'm envious that you are now nearing the begininng of your wonderful life adventure.......you'll never regret it and the experience will change you for the better. There really is no better education than travel and your whole life perspective will change as a result of your experience.

Thank you both (Mikey and Tiny Tiger) for your quick replies. I'm in such a weird place right now, am dying to be giving up what I feel are some of the more onerous traps of security, while still yearning to have some reassurance that I'll be o.k. if I make such a huge leap. But there's no knowing until you actually do it, and from what I've been reading, people who take the leap do not regret it. I'll keep working out the details, but I think I now have a sense that travel will open doors for me that I'd never have been aware of If I'd stayed within the safety net of my current situation. Wish me luck. Reply to this

Tiny Tiger, I have a question for you. Based on your past travels, where would you want to go back to, or where would you go if there were no restrictions (monetary or otherwise)? I'm really interested in people's experiences, as I believe that you can learn so much from travellers' experiences.

Do you have any plans in the offing?

Safe travels to you too.
