Yes swancadeau, i agree with you. So, we also ought to advise that even the relationship with money will change forever. I've never been an addicted to shopping, i wasn't owning almost nothing even before, but during these 20 months around Asia i've learned not only to take better care of my money (the more my money lasts the more i can travel) but also to "better" understand what's necessary, what's important, and what's just something "i'd have bought in my previous life" (and i'm not talking about something expensive, a lot of small amount of money, is a lot of money). Now, i'm in my hometown and i can live with so little money (in Florence, Italy!!!) that my friends find it hard to believe.

Anyway, I agree with you. 😊

I look at it this way. When your old (I mean really old - not 30!!) you will look back at the people you knew and the places you saw. The jobs and the money wont figure in your final thoughts.

Also, I dont think travel is a bug - to me its better decribed as a "Cure"!! Reply to this

of course a Porscha is very superficial, but it looks like merchant bankers who sweated all their lives into corporate offices, often have a 50yo crises and buy a Porsche, because they have no past, travels and story to tell to themselves! So no, thanks to 8 years of travelling I have no interest in a Porsche, but still, growing up and liking wine, sailboats and good food, I would not be to quick to dismiss the importance of money!!!

A proposito, Cosimo, tu sei toscano, mi sun piemuntés!!.. Pensavo di essere l'unico italiano che effettivamente 'gave it all up'!! Se vuoi ho qualche megabyte per te sul mio sito www.planetnomad.org!! Se passi dalla Svizzera o ti piace andare in barca a vela, fammi sapere!

Swancadeu money has its place in the grand scheme of things............but too many people put too much importance into it........as you say traveling and living life to its fullest is more important😊 Reply to this

Thank you Kerry.

I had just made a post in the Aisa Travel Forum when I came across your post.

I am 39 and I have a 16 year old son. I am planning to travel Thailand.

Last Friday I handed in my resignation from a reasonably paid job.
1 month ago I put my house on the market.
This week I am putting my furniture on EBay.

I was bored of my job, my house is non stop maintenance and I can not remember my furiture ever bring a smile to my face! I can not wait to be rid of all these possession's, everything that gives me a false sense of security. I can not wait to breath again and experience life with a different perception.

Although my friends and family are 100% behind me I still had concerns whether this was an appropriate venture for a 16 year old - hence why I made a post earlier.

After reading your post and all the response you received, my concerns seem to have somewhat settled. I truly hope this will be an experience that will open my sons mind and give him a different perception of life.

We have one life and as many choices as we want. If we make the wrong choice, we can always make another.

So my Son and I are travelling to Thailand and I can't wait.

Thank you again Kerry for this post and all the replies. I sincerely hope you "Bite the Bullet" as they say, "Take The Leap Of Faith"..........

Go on.........I dare you

I'm reading all these posts and really wishing we'd sold our house too, we still have to go back and sort that out one day!
Alison, I'm sitting in a cafe in Thailand right now, watching the rain and the beautiful flowers. Rain is so much nicer here than in the UK, it makes everything more vibrant rather than dreary!
I first went abroad at the age of 18 and keep having conversations with my husband about just how important that year was for me, it really taught me a huge amount about myself and made me much less egocentric! I think this is a fantastic opportunity for your son - have a grand old time! Reply to this

Hi stewfox. My intention is to go whether or not the house has sold. I still have the option of letting. Also I know that unless I start putting plans into action now, I could find myself just drifting along as I have done for the past 20 or so years - and never experience travel. Work - I had to give 3 months notice - that's the reason for resigning now. And good luck with your travelling Stewart, make sure you definately do it!!!! And thank you Kate for your kind and encouraging words - if you are still in The Kingdom come November, I hope our paths cross. Are you travelling Thailand or do you have a base? Reply to this

Go Stewart - Go Stewart - Go Stewart!!!!!! This life will be waiting for you when you come back, if you want to come back that is! I always wanted to travel when I was younger but fear got the better of me and I made excuses not to go! Don't get me wrong, I still have many fears about this whole new venture, exploring the path of the unknown - but the truth of it is, I think I am more scared of carrying along this path, as I know it well! So kick start some of those plans into action Stewart and keep me informed! Would love to know how it's all going! Reply to this

Hi Olive, such a shame but we probably wont be here then, we have a base at the moment but are moving on at the end of the week! That's the only thing, moving on is always full of mixed feelings - excitement for what lies ahead, and sadness for what we're leaving, sniff! Reply to this

Jobs and posessions are replacable. I'm the happiest 26 old temp in the world! Why? Because I've gone on 15 backpacking trips in the past nine years and never settle down. I just buy time until my next adventure. Reply to this

Greetings -

One bit of advice...when you are lying on your death bed you won't be thinking, "I should have worked more" so take the trip! Reply to this

It seems most of the people who've been through this experience have found true happiness by removing all ties to material imprisonments. Do it and you'll never regret it, do nothing and you'll always look back at the time when it could have been. Best of luck on your travels. Reply to this
