I have one week... Where should I go?

I will be meeting up with a group of friends in Tokyo, but have decided to give myself a week of travel in Asia prior to. If you had any choice where would you go to/return to?

I will be meeting up with a group of friends in Tokyo, but have decided to give myself a week of travel in Asia prior to. I will be flying into Tokyo in the beginning of August and then would like to take another flight out, with no real restrictions as to where to go. I have backpacked through Europe and spent time in Australia, but this would be my first time to Asia. Where would you recommend I go?

Potentially helpful information:
- I am a Social Studies teacher so I would like to learn about history and culture
- I also enjoy photography and beautiful natural landscapes
- I am leaning towards Southeast Asia (Thailand & Cambodia) Reply to this

Visit Thailand. Thailand is an easy break-in country for a first visit to Asia. You may be able to enter without a prior visa too depending on your passport. Thailand has a better tourist infrastructure than Cambodia. Find your country on this this link below.

Most flights to Thailand go through Suvarnabhumi. No problem changing major currencies over at the airport. (Bangkok has 2 airports, some discount airlines land at Don Muang too.)

From Suvarnabhumi you have rail service between 6 a.m. and midnight. In Bangkok you can use rail service to get around the city. Meter taxis are cheap if you use the meter and do not bargain the cost. From the airport there is also Public Taxi service, located in 2 areas on first floor.

Have small bills and coins for paying taxi drivers; don't expect change for big bills like 500 baht notes. In the city don't get in a meter taxi unless the driver agrees to use the meter. Most drivers will unless you look easy!

There are old temples, palace, national parks, tourist sites like River Kwai (WWII History,) museums, etc. Google check will give you more options.

Japanese go to Thailand for their cheap holidays. Hotels, local transportation, restaurants, nightlife - all cheaper than Tokyo! For Bangkok a hotel near the Skytrain will be helpful.
