Traveling for Free?

Is it possible to travel for free? Or at least close to it?

I have thought about volunteering before. The issue i have with most volunteer projects is the amount of money they ask from you. If i'm going to volunteer to help people i don't want to end up paying loads of money. I'd rather just take myself along and give a cause an extra pair of hands. If i was going to do any volunteer work i'd prefer to work with animals (wild animals). The only projects i have found workign with wild animals though always cost loooooooads.

It is maybe something i would consider as part of my travels but i'd have to find the right place and the right kind of work (something i actualy want to help with). Reply to this

I generally travel for free, or close to it, wherever I go. Started off by using couch surfer, but eventually grew beyond that since I wasn't as broke after awhile. It was more of a personal challenge, for me to attempt to travel free. <snip>

Not to mention, it's pretty funny to read because the guys is pissed off about losing his job, hence he wrote the book to hit the airlines in the wallet. With all the recent bad press from the TSA recently, it makes for a good read.

Good luck to you!

bro you should try and go to new zealand (yes some advertisment) here are some reasons (apart from the flight it is super cheap)
1. you can hitch hike everywhere in the country. no problem at all. have done it all around the south island multiple times. did a trip for a week and spend about NZD50
with a bit of luck you can even hitch over to the south island (friend of mine got a ride in a truck on the ferry)
2. if you have a tent with you, you can stay at DOC campsites (these are department of conservation) which costs you 3 dollar a night or nothing depending on how honest you are (it is not controlled). and they are situated at really beautiful spots, close to all the cool things
3. new zealand has a very good couchsurfing community, so it is very likely that you wont have to spend any money on accomodation, and as you said, meeting people on the road will defineatly help (again, if you have a tent you can sleep in peoples backyards).
4. also nz is very safe, got stuck in balclutha and slept under a bridge. a friend spent some nights in hyde park in christchurch. you have to be a bit smart about that. but I think there is a homepage somewhere that lists spots to sleep for free.
5. yeah volunteering costs but woofing doesnt. check it out. you pretty much help people at farms, hostels etc, and get accomodation and food for free.
6. food wise, you can try dumpster diving. is a bit dodgy in new zealand though not like canada otherwise you can live of ramen for weeks if you take a stove with you.

all in all if you have 200 pounds a month you have far enough money. the only thing you cant do for free is all the bungee, whitewater rafting, skydiving queenstown insanity, but who knows you might just run into the right people
