Generally, KL is safe. You can freely move to anywhere you like. It is also cheap. Having said that, Malaysian signboards and connecting transports systems are still weak. Recently, some FIT (Free and Independent Travellers) got cheated by the taxi drivers.

I, personally, feel you need someone to be with you when you are travelling from hotel to tourist destination and return. It would be better if the person can talk the local malay language. Having a chartered car and knowledgeable driver will be the best. No need to wait for public transport (It's just a waste of time).

Apart from that making hotel reservation is vital bofore you depart from your home country. This is to secure places in the hotel.

You can design you tour something like this.

Day 1: KL city tour

Day 2: Batu Caves (biggest cave temple in the country) and Genting Highlands tour ( biggest themepark on approx 1500m altitute)

Day 3: Transfer to Penang. En-route visit rural areas, waterfalls, hotspring, and rafflesia and aboriginal people

Day 4: Tour Penang

Day 5 : Direct transfer to KL International Airport

Thank you and Welcome to MALAYSIA.

you can come here solo, then stay the night in backpacker hostels, there are plenty affordable and decent ones in Bukit Bintang and Chinatown areas! You'll be able to meet up with other travelers at these hostels and will have company to make your way around KL.. Bukit bintang is great coz there's a LRT (train) station, lots and lots of shopping malls, good places to eat and it comes alive at night!

I don't recommend you take tours, coz they are often overpriced, and its relatively easy to get around by yourself, just study the public transportation system before you come.

As for Penang, there are many buses headed there, you just have to get to the bus station, the main one is at Bukit Jalil (also very accessible by LRT), from there a direct bus to Penang won't cost you much and will take around 5-6 hours, if you take the bus from the company Transnasional, you can book ahead online..

hope you enjoy your trip in malaysia! 😊 Reply to this

I remember touching down for the first time in SE Asia in KL - Lonely Planet described it as the "baby pool", and that proved very true. KL is perfectly safe and easy to get around. I like to stay in the hostel across from the Puduraya bus station, I think its called the Pudu Hostel (its the one on the 5th floor). Its convenient when you need to catch an early morning (or anytime, really) bus and you can walk over to Chinatown or Little India in about 3 minutes. LRT stop is about 5 minutes walk, piece of cake to get around town on that. Great food and frest fruit there. I liked Melaka, its easy to get to from KL. If you have a little more time Tioman Island is very nice, great diving but its a full day travel there and back, I don't know if 5 days would be worth it, but maybe...Cameron Highlands are also a nice side trip. KL is relatively safe for anyone traveling alone. Just try avoid the back alleys during night time would be good.

As for travel package & solo, it has it's own advantages as well as disadvantages. If you are the adventurous type, solo will be good coz you are not tight up with the package. Just need to do lots of "googling" before you go.

If you are not confident then go for packages.

All the best!
