Advice for trip from Bangkok to Chiang Rai

would like suggestions on MUST SEE places in Thailand
14 years ago, December 30th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #97857
I'm flying into Bangkok and have a month to travel around Thailand before I start a month long volunteer program in the Chiang Rai area. It would make the most sense to stay to the west but if time allows we could possibly venture east.

So, if anyone has suggestions about places that you consider essential to visit I would love the help!

So far I'm thinking ...

Bangkok – Ayuthaya - Lopburi – Sukhothai - Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai

Hello Rhianna 😊

Here are my favourite things to do in Bangkok.
- Hang out at the bars and restaurants at the Khao San Road. It is a famous backpackers haunt in Bangkok. Trashy, but fun.
-Ride up and down the river on the passanger boat. It is a good way to view life by the river.
-Visit the restaurant at Jim Thompsons house for lunch. There is also a tour of the house that is worth taking.

Try and fit in Pai, north of Chiang Mai. Its not the mecca the guide books would have you think but definitely worth a visit. Good place to chill out a relax and some really cool bars, with decor you wont find else where.

Kanchanaburi is really worth a visit too. It's 3hrs from Bangkok. Good sightseeing and waterfalls there.

I can second the riverboat ride, which costs just pennies on the local transit boats. And Kanchanaburi, definitely, as a side trip out of Bangkok. How about the south? The islands are beautiful -- just take your pick. A month should provide plenty of time to take in one or more.

In Bangkok, don't miss the Grand Palace, and if you stay around nearby Khao San Road (backpacker central, not to be missed), be aware it is not on the excellent skytrain or MTR lines, so it adds a little complication getting around that huge and congested city. And while you are there, be sure to have a Thai massage. Just $6 an hour and far better than any you will get back home. Also, if you are in town on a weekend, go to the sprawling JJ Market (Chatachak market). It's something like 20,000 stalls spread over 28 acres -- the skytrain takes you right there. I forget the name of the specific line, but anyone can tell you. Reply to this

Some good advice on what to see and do in Bangkok. There's also Wat Arun,Wat Pho and Wat Saket all very close to the King's Palace. All those places you've listed are worth looking at.If you go to Sukhothai I think it's also worth having a look around Phitsanalok simply because it's just a large provincial Thai town with nothing special about it at all.Just a typical Thai town.Kanchanaburi is well worth looking at.My opinion on Pai is not much.Did'nt like it at all-thought it was trying to be something it's not supposed to be.The whole place is just one big guest house full of trendy Europeans and trendy Thais.I was there last October talking to a Dane - he said he could'nt believe how much the place had gone to the pack over the last 5 years.Only my opinion on the place-you may love it if you go! Kanchanaburi was really good but make sure you spend the night on a raft motel then go wash elephants the next morning. most amazing experience climbing on an elephants back then it walks into the river its trainer throws you a scrubbing brush and says "Don't forget behind the ears". Reply to this

I can second the boat rides and the grand palace, when you arrive though, dont listen to many people that will come up to you telling you its closed but theres a nice temple around the corner they are more than happy to show you to. this happend over 10 times as we walked the road from our boat to the palace and we were convinced it was closed until a security guard told us otherwise and we had a wonderful time.

Massages in Thailand are out of this world. just ensure it doesnt say 'massage parlor' above the door otherwise you'll be going in for an entirely different sort of treatment if you get me.

Hope you have a lovely lovely time! x Reply to this
