I'm a doc. filmmaker based in NYC...I want to make a documentary about traveling...
17 years ago, May 12th 2006 No: 1 Msg: #5625

I am a 32 yr old filmmaker living in NYC. I spent most of my 20s globetrotting and working in India, Europe, Thailand and other areas in Europe and Asia. I just finished my first feature, which ended up getting picked up by the BBC (and will hopefully be sold in many territories outside of Britain!) My next project is going to merge my two passions- filmmaking and traveling.

I want to make a film about travelers... that unique brand of individual who leave their homes and worlds and enter into the unknown for long periods. I plan on leaving for India sometime this summer and find people along the way to follow for a few days at a time. However, I think it would give my film an interesting narrative if I could actually follow a person or couple (or two friends) from their homes to their destinations (and perhaps back again at the end of the trip). I would not need to stay with anyone for more than a few days, probably on and off over the course of their trip. I will be traveling and filming with one other person, and we are extremely cool and discreet. This is NOT meant to be a reality show. My style is more arthouse documentary, very subtle and mostly composed of verite footage (not a lot of interviews, if any). I am really sensitive about not offending locals by throwing my camera in their faces...

Ideally, the film would be something like a documentary Happy Together. I am aiming high!

I would love to hear from anyone who is planning a trip that's at least 3 months long. Also, if you are already out there and would like to be part of this, you can let me know about yourself and where you'll be this summer- I'll email you when I'm out there. I would prefer my main subject to be someone who speaks English primarily, but secondary characters can be from anywhere.

This is a self-financed project, but my last film also started out as self financed and I ended up getting a budget to finish from the BBC. So, I am not offering anything outside of credit, copy of the film and of course the chance to have your experience documented. Please feel free to ask any questions. You can respond directly to me via email at basiafilm@gmail.com (or use the forum). Please tell me as much as possible about yourself ( who you are traveling with, have you traveled before, age, pics, anything else that might tell me more about you.) I am willing to travel to Europe or anywhere in America to meet you before your trip...South Africa or Ausralia, I'll probably have to meet you out there!

Thanks very much and happy travels!

I am about to do the same thing really. I am an untra budget traveller. I like to settle down places and get to know the area and be apart of the atmosphere. I guess if you want to do a documentary, you should probally get a few different kind of "travellers" and look at different ways to experience an enviroment.....but I'm up for it. I work with media studies and relations in hte past, so I can help with the video as much as to be apart of it, and I am a foriener living in Scotland, and I plan to come back here for hte edinburgh festival before going to the middle east.... but get a hold of me if you are interested... I also live in Brooklyn and am in the process of planning a trip to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam with a friend. We are two male teachers who travel during our summers. We are adventurous, budget travelers, so we will be on the move trying to get the most out of the experience. Our trip this summer will last for 5 weeks, so if we can help, then let me know. I'm from Australia and have been on the road for just over two years, mainly in Asia and Australia, turning my experiences into coffee table books. Your project sounds interesting and I am wondering if you wouldn't mind me piggy backing on your project with a parallel print version. Please let me know when you have more details if this would suit you.

Cheers,
Peter. Reply to this

I'm from South Africa and started three years ago. Traveled through Africa, Europe and Middle East, now about to go to China. I'm somewhat older than most people on the road, but you're welcome to contact me. Website: www.vrolijksontrek.com before I left my wife to do her backpacking trip to India. Reply to this
