No big trips in the future as my cashflow has taken a down turn as I have moved to Denmark and working part-tinme while at school learning danish.

Back to the UK in august and possibly south east asia at the end of the year.

I sooooooooooooo need a lotto win!

After 20 weeks of travel in 2008, my plans are modest for 2009 as I have only a short amount of leave accrued (and an equally short amount of funds). So I've chosen a destination which can only be visited for a short period, and which will offer a fairly intense yet fascinating experience - North Korea.

But if I get a lotto win (like Mike) then these plans will change dramatically! Reply to this

Currenty I'm saving and planning out a 2 week road trip to Vancouver, first real road trip! After that, going to see some family in Texas and Oklahoma in the summer, still trying to decide if I should drive or fly...or take the train.. dunno, but that will be the next trip.

Winning the lotto would drastically change the travel plans.....maybe RTW??? One day....

Finally decided on summer 2009 a couple of days ago. Here's the plan:
Boarding an airplane headed for South America, where I'll be staying for 9.5 weeks. Half of the trip will be spend on visiting friends I've made last year (lived in South-America for 8 months) and half of the trip will be on new grounds. I'm thinking of Colombia right now, but it all depends on what's possible.

Basically I want to do all by bus, and only buying an inward and outward flight in advance. The idea is to travel for 4 weeks and live somewhere for 4 weeks (and have 1.5 week left open to whatever happens). Maybe get a job, see what happens.

My route:
- Paraguay - Chile - Bolivia - Peru - Ecuador (maybe just traveling through, not sure yet) - Colombia Reply to this

We're a family of 4 (Mom and 3 daughters) planning a month long road trip from Montreal, Quebec to Victoria, BC.

The plan is to stop for quick sleeps in Timmins and Thunder Bay and then spend 3 nights in Winnipeg. On night in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on our way to Calgary for 4 nights camping during Stampede week. Then one night in Banff before we set up camp in Hope, BC for 4 nights, Victoria for 4 nights, on to Hinton, AB for 2, Edmonton for 1, Saskatoon for 1, back to Winnipeg for another 2 nights then quick stops in Thunder Bay again. Marathon and Sudbury each 1 night before returning home to Montreal. An enthusiastic itinerary I think but ever since I was very young I've wanted to drive across Canada. We are so excited in anticipation of this trip!!

I've mapped this all out using Microsoft Streets and Trips. We'll leave at the end of June so there is still room for adjustment and alteration.

My wife and I are planning a RTW and leaving in June. We'll be traveling for a year. Our trip includes:

Into London out of Madrid, Athens, Possibly South Africa, India, Bangkok, Hong Kong, back to the U.S. Then south if we have time but more importantly money.

Are we trying to do too much? Should we go to South Africa?

I dont think you are trying to do too much. Nothing wrong with not exploring every stick and stone of the countires you visit, in my opinion. You could spend a few months on each continent and go to as much of each as you can without hurrying so much that you dont enjoy them. Reply to this

Great advice, thanks Mell. If I like a place and want to spend more time there I can always go back, right?

For sure you can. You likely have another 60+ years of your life left, so there should be time. Reply to this

Hi Jonathan and Zara, one year is definitely enough time to do what you want.

There are two ways to spread the budget further - one is to spend more time in cheaper places (i.e. India, Thailand) and you have enough time to visit Cambodia and Vietnam - all good options.

The other method is to stay in one place for a while to recoup your energy - transport costs can add to your budget. So if you stay in one city - negotiate a good rate with a pleasant hotel for a longer stay.

The other advantage of going back to a place you like (as Mel suggests) is that you usually return to the same place with slightly different eyes, so there is always something new to discover. Reply to this

Wow, this thread has surely attracted a crowd. That's great. I am going end of march for a month long trip to Turkey and Greece. Am planning to spend more time exploring Turkey, and will visit maybe 2 islands in Greece plus a special trip to my fav place, meteora's rock monasteries. Just getting worried over the protest rallies in Athens/Pireaus now. Hope things settle down by the time we get there. Reply to this

Ours is absolutely blank for 2009. Very reluctant to hand over any deposits in this economic climate, even if firms don't go broke tours can be cancelled and a lot of airlines schedules are already being re-arranged. We also think that from July to about September there could be some really good last minute deals, there are always plenty of cruises from Vancouver or Miami at much less than half price if nothing else turns up.
