At what age did you travel or at what age would you have preferred to have done your travelling?

I don't mean to bump this up =) Good read.

Same problem for me, I'am 22 been thinking of travelling for ages, no tie's no problem's. Thought tiny inkling to least having something to full back on, as I know I can't alway's enjoy myself all the time and play game's be silly, training to be a carpenter next year at 23, hopefully will be qualified in a few year's, then travel at 27ish.
With this i will feel have something to offer when need to work here and there, alway's nice to have skill's, along with skills learnt along the way travelling. I wish to go when 27, midish twenities.

At the age I'm at now, I see my fair share of place's. But I'm more for the party lifestyle of new place's and scene's next summer going to 7european music festival's. Meeting new people and place's there, but not truley joining the scenary, just the meeting new people and socializing in a party way.

So point I'm making, i know i would calmed down by then, in fact more preserved now, and when i do go will be right for me and I would feel ready in myself what i've lived alread. I'l appreciate all around me, the people, the culture, the lifestyle, seeing what's around me, actually take a step back and look.... Plus more funds!!

I dont think I added my 2 cents to this thread. I think all ages are good for travel. It is more of a lifestyle for me than something to do once. So, I juggle it with all the other things in my life such as work, parenting etc

I want to see the changing world over my lifetime. There are countries I visited 20 years ago which have changed a lot because of politics etc and I like to see how they were and how they are and how they will be. Reply to this

People of all ages travel for business and pleasure. Age is not really a variable in the value of travel. Whether traveling while you are young is preferable to traveling when you are older varies with the individual. The best advice should be to travel when you have the time and financial ability, and to the destinations most interesting to you. There is no right or wrong concerning the best time to travel. best age: 18-21 for crazy, nonstop partying. I think its the only age in which you can get away with things like multiple all-nighhters of drinking for extended periods without seriously damaging your health. You'll also most likely have some sort of income by then and you'll be legal to drink in almost any country.

I think once you experience that, partying is a lot more subdued, relatively, as you grow older.

As for experiencing the culture of a place, I think its better if you're mid twenties and older. I'm just saying this from my own experience because I was never able to fully appreciate such things traveling yet...but I feel I will in a few years. Reply to this

I started saving a few months ago for a RTW trip. It will take about 2 years of saving. This bugs me because I really want to go now, infact I would have much preffered to do it at 24. I am now 28, by the time I save enough I will be 30 pushing 31 😞 . My logic tells me not to be silly and that travelling at any age is fine and that 31 is still very young but my heart says a different thing. It was my 28th birthday that really pushed me to actually start saving for the trip instead of waiting to win the lottery. I think the fact that you can't get a working visa in Oz past 30 was another thing that made me feel I was getting too old. It really annoys me that they don't give visas to people over 30, what is that about? Reply to this

What do you think you would be too old for, at age 31? You can still work and earn money, you are still within your child bearing years, you still have many working years left in which you can earn money to do more besides travel. And you will still be young enough to do all these things at 33 if you travel for 2 years.

OK, so there is the work visa thing.... Yeah, annoying that they are ageist about it. 😞

Yeah that's what my logic says too. When ever anyone ever says something like 'I wish I had done this or that' I always say you can still do it and you are never too old but lately I have found myself saying these things myself and feeling myself aging but I have no idea why. It's not stopping me though, infact it has pushed me to do something that has been a lifelong dream and for the first time I feel proud of myself as I watch myself get closer to acheiving it every pay day! Probably because of the amount of ageism in society. And the media relentlessly encourage us to believe that young is better. I personally would think being older feels better, if it wasnt for the amount of ageism everywhere.

I feel proud of myself as I watch myself get closer to acheiving it every pay day!

Indeed! I think those who make the decision to go for it deserve congratulations. It does take a certain amount of courage, in my opinion to do what you want, because as well as giving up some financial security, travellers often face a lot of opposition from others, family and friends mostly. Not easy to say, 'yes, I want it and I am going to do it' when so many keep pointing out all the reasons why you shouldnt. Reply to this

I am 63 and my urge to travel has increased since the last 4-5 years and I've done quite a bit. Of course, as a person whose job required me travel 15-20 days a month since I was 25, that's helped. I know people who hate travelling to office.
Another piece of advice - you'll enjoy travel even if you are 60 only if you have the urge for it. Maybe not backpacking always but one can set their own routine. If you travel across India, you can travel anywhere.
So, "when I'm sixty-four" I'll still be travelling. Reply to this

I prefer 30+ because on that age, you're stable and have a family. Of course traveling with your family is what I most prefer because you can bond and enjoy the sceneries that you want to see. Reply to this

I don't think there is a "best" age to travel, just certain periods when you're more receptive to new experiences and so appreciate travelling more. If the times when you feel a desire to travel fit in with your 'life situation' (family, job, finances...) then you should grasp the opportunity.

In my 20s my aim was to set foot in each continents by the time I was 30 so that I could have the satisfaction to feel that I have been everywhere, put an end to my travels and move on to the others things such as settling down. How wrong I was! I am now 31 I have been to a lot of places but not yet to Australasia and subsaharan Africa, I think off course that I need to go to those places to feel complete but I also think that I was so silly to think I'd stop once I have been to all continents. The more you travel the more you want, if you are a natural born traveller any age is good, once you start you will never stop! Reply to this
