Reply to this Hello all. I am Gary. I live with my family in Hawaii and travel the world widely for profession, adventure, and pleasure. Both my family and I also have a home and reside part of each year on the island of Boracay in the Philippines. I am a professor in the School of Communications at the University of Hawaii and on the adjunct faculty of the web-based Organization Management and Development program of the Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California. My primary professional interests center on persons, teams and organizations as they encounter the adjustment, performance and motivation challenges of "strange lands"-- novel and rapidly changing ecologies characterized by new people, places, cultures and technologies. I am particularly interested in the experiences these challenges produce, the strategies developed to deal with them, and the communication and other skills required to implement the strategies effectively.
Over the years I have applied this focus to global assignments in business and government, our diverse, rapidly changing workplaces and communities at home, geographically dispersed teams, distance learning, knowledge creation and transfer, criminal justice, service delivery, and close relationships such as intercultural marriage. Most recently my emphases has been on coaching teams, managers and leaders to deal with intercultural and global diversity effectively and on self-organization and swarm optimization models of globalization in multinational enterprises.
I am happy to be in TravelBlog.
Aloha, Gary
Reply to this Hi I havent't joined in the last 24 hours so maybe I technically shouldnt be here but I also have only just started posting in forums so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Ed, 25, and have just embarked on a 2-year trip. My main interest is independent travel to really untouristy, remote places and above all tribal and indigenous groups. I always try to get to a reasonable level with the language before I go on a trip but obviously before this 2-year one I've had to pick and choose!
I've been on the move for 4 months now. My travels so far, which I've covered in my blogs, include 3 weeks in Armenia, 2 weeks in Arctic Russia traveling with a group of reindeer-herding nomads, 6 weeks in Vanuatu which was predominantly spent jungle and mountain trekking and staying in local villages, 2 days in Guam, a day in Australia, 3 days in Palau, 2 weeks in the Federated States of Micronesia including 5 days on a remote atoll, hundreds of miles from anywhere and with a population of 300. After that I got to the Philippines where I am now, have been for a month and will be for another five months. So far my whole trip has been amazing.
In April I'm going to take a boat from the Philippines to Malaysian Borneo, travel down through Indonesian Borneo and then get boats to West Papua (Irian Jaya). From there I'm going to travel overland to Papua New Guinea, spend 6 weeks there then get boats to the Solomon Islands. From there I'll fly to China via Oz and KL and spend 3 months mostly in South West China and Tibet. Then I'll head through Nepal to India where I'll spend Winter 2009 / 2010. After that I'm going to go back to England overland by the following route: India - Nepal - Tibet - China - Kyrgyzstan - Tajikistan - Uzbekistan - Turkmenistan - Azerbaijan - Georgia - Armenia - Iran - Turkey - Bulgaria - Rumania - Hungary - Austria - Germany - France - England.
My furst 11 blogs are already up so check them out! The last 2 havent got the photos yet but will do tomorrow. The first 3 are badly written I feel because I was still developing my style, and I feel that I get better with every entry I write. Thanks to travelblog for this opportunity and the opportunity to keep all my family and friends up to date with what I'm doing and where I am!
Reply to this Welcome to the forums Edward 😊
I certainly will read your blogs. You trip seems amazingly adventurous.
Reply to this Hi everyone! I'm ten months into a South American journey that started in Buenos Aires, took me to northern Patagonia for three months on volunteer projects and a three-week adventure trek, then further south and back up to Buenos Aires, Uruguay and the north of Argentina. Then Bolivia for six weeks, and Peru for three months now, as I have got temporarily stuck in Lima! I'm going to the north of Peru, Quito and Colombia next and looking for ways to extend my time in South America by volunteering or working. I had planned once to start a travel blog although it seems a bit late now!
Reply to this Hi Kristina,
Welcome to TravelBlog.
Never too late to start adding blog entries. They can be back dated - some TB members are backdating entries from quite a few years ago!
Reply to this manny - um, haven't 'travelled' since my twenties. But seeking adventure again - perhaps even emigration (form UK.)
Anyone know what Iceland is likE???? ;-)
Reply to this Welcome to TravelBlog Manny 😊
Iceland is expensive. But I suppose that means people livng there would get payed more and be relatively rich when they are in other coutnries.
