The good news is, Duran Duran were, of course, brilliant. The bad news is, we got the camera nicked in the crowd on Friday with all our photos from the last three weeks. Our sum total therefore are the couple on the Blog. New camera bought Saturday. Pics to follow. Friday night we saw Macy Gray. She has very big hair. And then we saw Simple Minds. Jim Kerr´s an idiot, but good to hear some of the old classics. Saturday night we saw Erykah Badu, she also has very big hair. The gigs here start late and finish late. Duran Duran finally hit the stage at 0215. We were down the front, knee deep in mud, aching legs, tired, but we sang loud and danced badly. Most excellent cultural experience. ... read more

Days 21, 22 & 23 After a couple of flights we were in Sucre, a beautiful small city with white colonial buildings. Our hotel was gorgeous and had a big court yard in the middle of it. Sucre is the richest city in Bolivia and it shows!! The next day we went on a city tour to the cemetry - sounds odd but it was really interesting as all the tombs are encased over ground or in monuments and then went to see some dinosaur tracks. It was unbelievable, there were these 80 million year old dinosaur tracks that were found when digging in a concrete factory, they're still digging away next to them and they're not protected in any way!! We then visited a textiles museum - again doesn't sound that enthralling but it was ... read more

Got to the hostel in Quito in time for rum and coke night. Oh sweet lord it was messy. We ended up clubbing, not gettting in till half 4 - officially over 24 hours awake! Struggled to cope with the subsequent hangover. Saturday was my one year anniversary with Al, so, unable to celebrate with said boyfriend, I celebrated by treating myself to a nice curry - my very first meal alone in a restaurant (pretty pointless eating in a restuarant alone - you forget how social eating really is). The Quito festivals were getting into full swing, celebrating the foundation of the city or something like that. Open sided trucks, or chivas, drove through the streets, fulls of people dancing and singing and blowing whistles along with bands perched precariously on the roof. Sunday i ... read more

Hi Folks, The above means "Presbyterian Church of Ayacucho" which is where I headed at 11am this morning. What a wonderful experience!! The Church is very small - I was lucky that I spotted it at all from the outside which was purely by accident!!Inside, it is a rectangular building with a stage at the bottom end. I was thrilled to see a drum kit and some music stands on the stage. Wondered if they had a praise band anywhere near as good as ours!! There were no obvious signs that this was a Church - no communion table and no crosses or other symbols on the walls. The pulpit was effectively the stage and the preacher preached from what appeared to be a Bible stand covered in a white cloth, with a lovely arrangement of ... read more

Mon. 28th. We're finally dragging ourselves away from this oases, but maybe it's time. The hotel's xmas tree has gone up, and with a dog and a 1-year-old running around, it's starting to feel too familiar! The 6 / 7- hour bus journey to La Serena is at last getting rid of the barren sand and rocky mountains, and we are beginning to see greenery - trees even. Tues. The hotel pointed us in the direction of the beach, but the 20 min. stroll turned into a 1- hour hike! It was well worth it - the sand is so clean and goes on for miles. Best bit of all, we've got it all to ourselves. Their tourist season starts soon and finishes in March, so goodnes knows how they make enough money to keep going. ... read more

Hola Chicas y Chicos, It is raining now in Bs As. When I first arrived six days ago it was quite hot and humid, then the following days were much more comfortable and sometimes jacket weather. I've only been to Europe once years ago, and this city and its people certainly has that flavor. Except for a few wide boulevards the downtown streets are one-way, narrow and typically congested with cars and people. This city is huge. With almost 12 million it is on par with New York or Tokyo. I've been to three or four different barrios, or neighborhoods, and have only seen a small percent. The people are friendly and quite patient when I practice my broken Spanish. My Spanish class, by the way, was really fun and provided a good routine for my ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz December 4th 2005

It didn´t take long for Uyuni to live down to our very low expectiations for the place - Emer´s description of the place implied that we wouldn´t want to spend long there and found nothing to contradict that assessment. However leaving wasn´t as easy as we had hoped. Our plan was to take the ´luxury tourist bus´ to make the notoriously unpleasant journey to La Paz more bearable and not likely to break the bank at $25 for the 12hour journey. However after waiting for several hours for the agency to open we were told that the bus was cancelled that day (Friday) due to protestors blocking the road (something to do with some elections due later this month) and we would have to wait until Sunday. Not really what we wanted to hear! However when ... read more
