We have just completed the 4x4 Salar trip from San Pedro to Uyuni in Bolivia and it certainly lived up to the very high expectations we had from numerous recommendations. Our journey started early in San Pedro but shortly after starting we came to an abrupt halt at the Chilean exit point with a long queue to get out of Chile (we didn´t think it so bad that people would queue to leave...). Once we finally got our passports stamped it was back into the bus for the hour journey to the Bolivian entry point. At over 4300m this border control was little more than a shed with a flag flying outside. We paid the entry fee which we are told is necessary but a complete scam to extract money from tourists - scam or not ... read more

While booking ourselves onto a wine tour in Mendoza, the girl at the hostel we´re staying at happens to mention that Aerolineas Argentinas (the national airline, who we´ve booked a flight to Buenos Aires with tomorrow) are on strike and have been for nearly a week. We have to get there. Duran Duran are playing. Our room in our posh hostel has cable TV. Flick round the channels and find a live heated union debate with the workers from the socialist airline. The company have now started sacking people, so the strike is on for a while... Oh dear, this means a 13 hour bus journey back to Buenos Aires overnight. But the God of 80´s Pop Music is looking down on us and (with the help of an incredibly chatty and helpful travel agent, Francisco) ... read more

Hi everyone, Wasn´t at the orphanage today. As it´s Friday, Vicki and I went to the prison to help take the kids out for the morning. Was the same routine as last time checking into the prison. Numerous security stamps and my passport was held until we were leaving. Vicki had Karina today (the little girl I had last week) and I had Daisy. Daisy is the eldest of the prison kids and is more commonly known as "Crazy Daisy", but she was great with me. We brought the kids back to the CCS house where Marisol had some DVDs for them to watch - Tom and Jerry etc. They started to get restless after a while, so we headed out to the local park. The only problem with the park is that there are lots ... read more

No small dogs in Chihuahua, no nuts in Brasil, and now no biscuits in Sao...Huh? Thumbs up for Brasil tho´....the thumbs up sign is universal..the affirmative for everything, greeting, acceptance, admiration...like a lot of people see the bike and just give the thumbs up..it covers everything agreable, positive, conspiratorily (as in catching someone´s eye who has also just watched the same chica walk past)...but I think its only a bloke thing...I can´t recall any chicas doing it..maybe one or two up north... That last entry was a trial...went for dinner with Luis to a pizza place...seemed like fantastic pizzas, maybe something dodgey in the salami as I had ingested something that wanted to get out and proceeded to do so during the night...both-end-itis not to put to fine a point on it..so the next day I ... read more

After leaving Paraguay, where you´d be hard-pushed to find a tourist anywhere, I then crossed on foot the noisy, bustling friendship bridge at the border and over to Brazil; the total opposite of its neighbour. Different language, different culture, marauding gangs of picture-hungry tourists and a much more expensive day-to-day cost of travelling than other Latin American countries. The first difference that gave me cause for concern was the language difference, I had heard from others that it would be OK to understand because of its similarities with Spanish... Then I heard them speak this Brazilian version of Portuguese. I thought it sounded like an unromantic, ugly version of some vile concoction of German, Hebrew and Spanish, after eight double whiskys. And the strangest thing is, I can understand one person speaking Portuguese almost perfectly, but ... read more

OKAY! I just had to give you all some advice. Do i give advice? I don´t think so. Well i'm starting today. 1. Never be afraid to go anywhere because people tell you it isn´t safe (this of course, does not apply to Chechnya, Iraq or Antartica). What's the worse that'll happen? You don´t like the place and you spend your vacation in your hotel room. AT LEAST YOUR NOT WORKING (nobody sent this to my boss, right?) 2. Lonely Planet guidebooks are okay but Rough Guides RULE....which i'm realizing after i left mine on my bed at home in New York. It has more details, times, open hours, maps yadda yadda. Oh Rough Guide Rough Guide....why have you left me? 3. You can pay for your trip when you're old. They have BankBoston ATMs here. ... read more

After all of the excitement of the Day of the Dead celebrations Kate and I went to the Saquisili markets that the Lonely Planet had hyped as "South America's most important indigenous markets". It didn't live up to expectations at all and was just a market like any other. Apparently, the animal market was interesting but by the time we got there, there were only a couple of piglets left. The highlight was a man selling goats milk. All that he had in tow was the goat. The original plan was to move on to Chugchillan and spend a few days around Lago Quilotoa but posters were plastered around Latacunga, advertising 'La Mama Negra' celebrations on the Saturday. We decided to stick around for the party but this meant an extra day in one of the ... read more

Just out of Cucao this morning four young guys squeezed inside a small, white, hatchback pulled up next to us. The driver wound down his window and asked: "Do you speak English?" "Yea" "Was that the National Park back there?" "Yea" "What, just the beach and stuff?" "Yep, you can walk for 20kms North and South and it won´t change". I actually got this last on the authority of a British couple we´d had dinner with last night. I hadn´t walked it myself. "That´s a disappointment then" he said, wound up his window and drove off back to the highway. I sat there for a moment longer, digesting his last comment, and thought to myself yea, that´s a pretty good summary of Cucao and climbed back on the bike for the two and a half hour ... read more

Hello everyone!! Well - what an exciting morning we had at the CCS house!! The youngsters had been out last night and had a very late night!! They had promised to help Marisol organise a party for the kids at the prison today. Needless to say the majority of them didn´t manage to get out of bed, and Marisol was left to organise the party with a limited number of helpers!! There was an incredible fuss this morning as one of the girls hadn´t made it home by the time we were ready to leave for work. The CCS staff were in a flap - obviously concerned for her safety. She arrived home just before 8.30am having kept us all late for our placements. I was really disappointed as this was one of the girls I ... read more
