Arrived in Caracas yesterday afternoon and was almost instantanously overjoyed by the ensuing heat. My plane journey was anything but uneventful! Firstly when I arrived at the airport I checked in and the lady behind the desk said something about tax, I thought oh great more expense, but I went into a side office and they gave me 60,000 pesos (just under 20 pounds), confused but a good start. Most of the plane was filled up with the crew of Pop Idol Latin America, I was sat next to two of the camera men, one was a hottie!! They were all very loud and excitable, the hottie next to me kept listening to his ipod and dancing (and playing pretend drums, oh yeah!). I also met a very interested French man in the airport. He was ... read more

So, the next leg of the journey begins, bright and early with a departure from Rio and a sad goodbye to Matt, with several fresh faces on the truck, which itself is different along with our new driver, Euan and our tour guide Mark. Newbies include a couple of Aussie couples (Matt & Sonya, Dean & Jana), another Aussie , Andy, 3 dudes from Hong Kong (Chung, Yiu and Jonny), Doug (Laandoner), Tracy (Geordie, lives in NZ), Heather (Canadian), Nathan (another southerner) and Jenni (Finnish but lives in Canada). En route we were briefed on the running of our new truck, Magaly, who is bigger and more modern than Jack with better locker organisation (Jazz and I retained our priviledged positions as truck packers, meaning no cooking required), although the seats are smaller and she rocks ... read more

2 days of travelling to get to Los Rocques in Venzuela started with a morning on the beach before saying goodbye to Pucon, most agreeable. A trip in the taxi with The Bunk to the airport before flying to Santiago. Santiago appears surrounded by hills and looked impressive as the sun set in the distance. Our airport hotel did the job and the pain of the previous day's bike ride was slowly diminishing. 29/2 Back on the plane for the trip to Caracas. Finally managed to buy decent postcards at the airport but getting stamps is like searching for the holy grail. Our seats are 'H' and 'F' which indicated we be sat apart once more. Tough for the wife but a chance for some quiet time for me. Bizarrely H and F were together - ... read more

Uff, finalmente in Sudamerica. D'altra parte... il clima è eccellente :-)... read more

For anyone who was concerned....yes, I am still alive! And if you were worried about the story getting boring...fear not...it´s like a fine wine and only gets better! The only problem is that I haven´t written in so long that some of the details have gotten fuzzy or mixed together. Plus, I hate to write super long entries because I feel that they get boring and monotonous...but look at me now...wasting precious words. After waiting for Yaneth´s second brother until the Tuesday after the Saturday that he was supposed to show up the three of us girls decided to head to Puerto La Cruz and meet him there. He ended up screwing us in the end...just like the other brother...and we ended up heading back to the island alone. I had a very embarrassing moment while ... read more

so I am already in Germany, finally came this afternoon after missing my transit flight and spending a day in Madrid. Michal is not so lucky, he is still in Caracas, and really not happy about it. Its a horrible city with horrible people and dangerous as hell. There are military and police walking around with machine guns, and you cannot trust them one bit. Air France Venezuela suddenly decided to not let him take his flight, because the flight was changed, and apparentely it was not allowed to be changed, they refuse to give him a new ticket or let him fly out. Tomorrow I will try to organise him out of there. This airline, is really terrible, just problems after problems, and they dont give one toss about dealing with problems they cause. We ... read more

Hola Amigos and greetings from a sunny and funny South America! ´Siento haber tardado tanto en escribir´. (For those non bilingual friends of ours - ´we are sorry it has taken us so long to write´) Even if the sightseeing has been put on hold for a bit, at least we are learning something, right??? We landed in Santiago,Chile on the 30th October and are becoming increasingly sad that our trip of a lifetime is drawing to a close...only 3 weeks left! This really is the Final Frontier. After our long flight from New Zealand, we checked into a fab hostel called Andes, dropped the bags and went straight out for dinner. A lovely local restaurant was recommended to us and, knowing us, the flashpackers that we are, we made a beeline to it. Unfortunately the ... read more

After a six hours on the bus we arrived in Caracas froze to the core. The air con on the bus was ridiculous and the only restbite was when we stopped for lunch which I used to heat up in the sun! We also had chance to taste our first Arepa, similar to a pita and filled with roast pork, cheese and salad, very filling. Once at the bus station we tried to haggle for a taxi but they all wanted double what the hotel told us to pay! They were saying that petrol was very expensive just a shame its one of the cheapest places in the world at 2p a litre compared to £1.20 at home?! So after an hour on another bus and metro we arrived at our pre booked hotel nice and ... read more

Next on Trevor's "must do" list is a visit to Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world! After disembarking in Manaus, Brazil on Monday evening, we headed straight for the airport to catch our flight to Caracas, Venezuela. Our flight was an overnighter that neither of us could sleep on (gross - we arrived about 6am Tuesday morning) ... and as we were waken up every morning on the boat at 5am by darling little children, we arrived in Caracas rather cranky and just wanting to be on our way to Angel Falls. We set about to arrange a tour through one of the "tourist" booths at the airport, and things didn't go so well. We have officially had our first experience of being swindled -- BIG TIME. Our first bit of advice for anyone ... read more
