Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568Montevideo, Uruguay (Capital) on Tuesday. Both Argentina and Uruguay (& Brazil) have been celebrating Carnival. From what we hear, that celebration was Monday and the recovery day is Tuesday. Both Buenos Aires and Montevideo were empty. Monday and Tuesday in the main center and no traffic. It was nice walking around without having to dodge the traffic. Pedestrians are warned. ... read more

Thursday, December 12th--At sea, sailing toward Montevideo, Uruguay Got up late and did the usual activities for us on a “down” at-sea day. We are constantly surprised (not sure why??) at the many ways that the cruise ships make extra money besides the previously discussed assessed gratuity of $25 per stateroom, per day, to offset their employee wages. As soon as there is a day at sea, the tables come out around the pool for the sale of T-shirts at 2 for $20, and handbags, scarves and watches for $10. As you know, there are art auctions, it seems almost daily. Who goes on a cruise to buy art?? How do you get the fine art pictures home?? Then there is the jewelry. Same thing as far as we are concerned; however, they must sell enough ... read more

Uruguay, a hidden gem in South America and a country which is seemingly looked over by many global trotters. I write this as my 4 months living here is coming to an end and I am now sitting on a plane somewhere over the continent of South America at 3am in the morning and bound for the warmer climates of Costa Rica in Central America! Yes – I've not just changed countries again but now continents also. I had started to write this a week ago and I was going to tell you all about my past 6 weeks in Uruguay since finishing up work. Of my travels along the coast to the rustic beach town near the Brazilian boarder of Punta del Diablo with it’s beautiful people and laid-back lifestyle; of the slight-contrast of gorgeous ... read more

Not sure if that was the saddest or best move ever – 3 big bags and that is all I own over here… ...and I do everything possible that it stays that way! I use cardboard boxes to store things, plastic bags for an improvised bathroom bin, cardboard to put my shoes on, pegs to close open food bags…. Great fun to come up with all this ideas. Second night in my own flat, all washing is done, not so lucky on the ironing… my landlord did not want to do it, but he does everything else. Last night I did not know how to turn on the gas on the cooker so I called him - 20 minutes later he was at my place and showed me, great guy. The weekend was quiet; I went ... read more

27-29th March Montevideo Well excuse me for being thick, but I don’t even know what day of the week it is much less what public holiday – but of course it’s Easter and unlike in the UK where things shut for a couple of days (if that) here they close for a week! The first thing we noticed about this city is it really isn’t a classic tourist destination, it’s a working city and a slightly faded, grubby one. However there are lots of lovely small parks and some fabulous architecture, even if the buildings themselves are derelict and unused. We had a good wander around the old town on our first full day and came across a post office so immediately bought a couple of stamps, we have had to search for them in other ... read more

Where to start, well I guess food is a good topic. As I was told by lots of people it is a meat oriented culture over here. One day in the office I offered salad to one of the colleagues, his answer was: "I do not eat the food of my food - e.g. grass eaten by cows". But what I find odd is, that their favorite food is Sushi - Everywhere you get Sushi. The office life is also very different from home. For instance the hours are longer, the commuting is challenging without a car and the people are extremely helpful and friendly. At lunch everybody meets in the kitchen where the food delivery gets dished out to plates. For about 1 hour you sit together chatting and eating. It is a very family ... read more

After a long and uneventful flight I landed at Carrasco International Airport - when they say international, well the terminal building is new and rather grand, but there were 2 big planes (one Iberia, the other from American Airline) when we landed - and a few small private jets. The same seems true for the city, from what I have seen so far. The Ramblas and Avenidas are quiet - well at least at the weekend and not many people are out either. On Sundays all the shops are open. So Sabine, a colleague from the bank, showed me one of the shopping malls, where I had to buy a new handbag! She also showed me a good substitute for Starbucks right at the sea side where we had tea and cake. Later we even went ... read more

Montevideo, Uruguay Uruguay is an agricultural country, next door to Argentina and Brazil, with Montevideo its' capital. One feature of the city is that with the exception of the sail like Torre de las Telecommunicaciones skyscrapper most of the buildings are 18th and 19th century colonial architure. The most interesting part of the city for us was the old city located near the docks.... read more
