Montevideo, Uruguay

Uruguay is an agricultural country, next door to Argentina and Brazil, with Montevideo its' capital. One feature of the city is that with the exception of the sail like Torre de las Telecommunicaciones skyscrapper most of the buildings are 18th and 19th century colonial architure. The most interesting part of the city for us was the old city located near the docks.

There are 2 monuments dedicated to the settlement of Uruguay and the important role that Gaucho's played. This one is Gauchos moving a family pulled by oxen.

This is a moument showing Gauchos moving a family in a covered wagon.

In the early part of the century family's would have a town house along with their ranch home. The town home had to be large to support all the children and servants.

In the market near the docks the restaurants cook with wood , the meat is lowered down onto the grill and all the meat cooked together.
