Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568So just 3 days after misplacing his computer, he has it back in his possession. I say that is pretty good timing. Jim and Craig Williams met me at the airport. They do not own a vehicle. We took the city bus back to their beach front apartment. Again, I was pretty tired, so I fell asleep and slept from 2pm - 6pm. The Williams were staying with the Jim and Cheryl for 4 weeks while their apartment gets renovated, so I stayed in a tiny storage room which was perfect for me. I had told Jim that I did not have anything on my agenda while I stayed there for 3 days, except to get a souvenir spoon. On Tuesday morning, Denise and I went walking along the board walk. Montevideo is very European ... read more

6/29 I got up, packed, and ate some breakfast while I waited for a cab to the airport. I shared the cab with Phil from Germany and got to my flights. It was a little difficult this time because of the language barrier and there were so many people, but not as bad as when I missed my flight because of customs. I saw the beginning of the Mexico v Netherlands game before I boarded the plane. Got through customs easily, exchanged money, and waited outside for the bus. The Uruguayan peso is really inflated and things are just as cheap here as in Brazil. $1 is the same as U$22. Also, it was freezing in Montevideo. Around 50 during the day and 40 at night, plus the wind was blowing since its a coastal city. ... read more

12 April 2014 – Saturday – Montevideo, Uruguay We saw little of the scenery on our overnight bus journey from Rosario to Montevideo, Uruguay. Even when crossing the border at 4am was more like a highway toll stop than a border crossing. The bus attendant woke us up enough to collect our passports and then returned them to us a few minutes later. It rained throughout the night and we slept much of the journey. When we arrived at the Three Cruces bus station we were met by the bright and bubbly Veronica, whose apartment we were staying in for the four nights. She helped us with the ATM and escorted us to the local bus which deposited us a couple blocks from her apartment. She had been living here with her boyfriend of ten years, ... read more

To fill the gap after the grounding of the space shuttle fleet Uruguay has built a replacement quarried from special local heat-resistant stone. I was fortunate enough to get a picture of the completed spaceship on its launch pad; three of the booster rockets are clearly visible (see photo 1). As with most projects there has been a gross financial overrun and so they have had to cut some corners on the transport system for supplies and astronauts to the launch pad (see photo 2). However, the government are confident that the imminent launch will be successful and have commissioned a celebratory tango that is currently being extensively rehearsed in the streets (see photo 3) ahead of the main parade after the launch. ^ Para llenar el vacío después de la puesta a tierra de la ... read more

Hola amigos! We have found ourselves in the little country of Uruguay! Just Northeast of its big neighbour, Argentina. As Dave's epic journey to Antarctica came to an end, the Sea Spirit continued its trip northbound for the Arctic pole and dropped Dave off in the lovely city of Montevideo, Uruguay. And as Theresa's epic journey of studying in a Spanish school, eating chocolate, tasting wine and speaking with a trilingual cat had also come to an epic end, she jumped on a plane from Mendoza to Buenos Aires, then another plane to Montevideo to meet up with the frozen traveler. Here on in, we will be writing about one direction of travel! Although some of the photos are a few stragglers from Theresa's journey in Mendoza. A special mention of an event that Theresa was ... read more

Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568Wednesday, the 26th, was an onboard day. However, we enjoyed it thoroughly. At 11am we went to the Mariner Society brunch. This group is the loyalty club of Holland America Line. We were welcomed by the captain and then had a great 3 course meal accompanied by champagne and were given coasters of the ship at the end. Very enjoyable. We went to both quizzes for the day winning the afternoon one and then at 7pm our whole group gathered in the Italian restaurant on board, Canaletto's, for a celebration of the 5 members who arehaving birthdays on the trip, including Fletcher. They were all given a special cake and, of course, were sung to as a group. Good food, good company and good wine! The next day we had our first landfall in Argentina, when ... read more

Following a pleasant and uneventful 12 hour bus journey I arrived in Uruguay's capital Montevideo. So chuffed to say the temperature here is a bit cooler and the scenery on route was pretty spectacular! When I got to the bus terminal I found the tourist office who gave me the essential city map and instructions on how to get a bus to my hostel....and this time I got it right no detours (well one minor one) finally arriving at my beautifully quirky hostel there are lots more mature residents here most likely due to the higher price tag but worth it to be in such a central location and have the space of my own company....the perfect opportunity for some me time to reflect on the past few months and contemplate what I have installed for ... read more

2 hours west of Punta del Este sits Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Much smaller than most other SA capitals, you could be in any city in Spain but for the multicoloured housing all over the place. I know I aleady mentioned it but it really does feel Spanish being here. Culturally it feels similar, and visually too. We haven't eaten out here as we have majorly tightened our reign but again the food seems delicious! They are very big on burgers and hot dogs and streets have plenty of vendors. We bought one and oh my god was it good, cheap too. I was quite worried after PdelEste about the prices here but they are significantly lower but still much higher than Brazil. Uruguay feels much more forward thinking than Brazil, you are able to ... read more

In Uruguay people get killed by eagles... More about that later. We were in Uruguay for only four days, that is not enough for any country, except perhaps Vatican City. The last time I was in Uruguay I was there for a week, and to be honest I did less than we did now. Montevideo was less touristic in those days, and less expensive. My most enduring memory of that time was the steak I had. To this day it is the best steak I have had in my life, and it wasn’t dear, I think I paid around five dollars for it. I suspect no steak will ever be able to top the one I had then, because as time goes by it will only become better and better in my mind. Uruguay therefore has ... read more
