Boat on the Border BuqueBus Ferry My Day Trip from Buenos Aires to Uruguay In Buenos Aires I went on line to check my bank balance and make some transfers. I had recently changed my return date to the United States, extending my 2016 dive tour by ten days. On my statement there were six or seven withdrawals on the same day. This made me anxious, for I pay foreign transaction fees to Argentine banks as well as to my U.S. bank. During my short trip to Ushuaia the ATM limit was only $100. Thus the excessive fees. When planning my trip to Argentina I had read about the “blue” dollar and travelers agreed one should bring lots of American cash to Argentina. The exchange for American dollars is almost 16% on Florida Street (blue dollars), ... read more

Hello Bloggers, So today we had our return ferry trip back to Buenos Aries, it’s cheaper and easier to get a bus to Iguazu from Buenos Aries than getting it from Uruguay, also it’s cheaper to get the ferry back and bus!!! If you’re going to get this ferry, book it up through colonicexpress.com as it’s the cheapest and book way ahead of time as it will be a lot lot cheaper, also remember that the tax is more that the ticket!!! We paid ARG$99 peso to get back but with tax was ARG$250 but still pretty cheap!!! In total our return ferry journey was ARG$800 (£50) The ferry was simple enough and took only 50 mins back; we got out of the ferry port quick and walked along Puerto Madero toward Retiro where our bus ... read more

Hello Everyone, So we got up early for our free breakfast, again it was bread and dolce leche (awesome sweet milk spread). We were leaving to head back to Colonia today but our bus was at 1430 so we still had all morning to explore!! We went for a walk in the early morning down to the Rambla-waterfront where the joggers are, we attempted a 5 minute jog but it is evident we clearly need to get back in the gym. It is a lot warmer in Montevideo, so Vick can now stop wearing the ski coat! One area to visit is ‘Mercado del Puerto, a fantastic restaurant area, here they had lots of Asado’s, so the best time to see this really is at night. Our early morning walk took us into the Plaza Independencia, ... read more

Hi, Today I woke up nice and early to walked to the bus station to book up our tickets to Montevideo, it was a 2 hour bus drive and cost about $300 peso. We had a free breakfast of bread and marmalade. It was ok, standard breakfast in SA, I can’t wait for a bacon sandwich!! Our bus was at 1100 so we just packed up, got the last of the good Wi-Fi and headed to the bus station; we also made sure that we could book up another night here in Hostel el Espanol for when we come back in a day as it was a good hostel (and the cheapest one in Colonia). The bus was no problem, just that it stops a lot and ends up with people stood close to you, this ... read more

Montevideo, Uruguay and Colonia del Sacramento…..Oh My Gosh! Today was one of the biggest surprises of the trip so far. We had no idea what a fabulous place Uruguay is. Prior to this we never gave Uruguay a thought except as a word with 3 U’s for Scrabble if we stretch the rules to use nouns ;-) Uruguay gained its independence from Portugal and Spain, July 11, 1830. The national elections, held every 5 years, were held just last November, and the new President is to be sworn in next week. They are getting downtown Montevideo ready for the inaugural events. We learned so much today-Uruguay has relatively low unemployment, crime rates and inflation, and the economy is growing under a stable economic and political system. This is in big contrast to what we heard in ... read more

What an exceptional day we have had! This place is so lovely! Docked at 9,00a.m. our guide Fabian was waiting for us at the port, we had booked with him before we left Australia, private tour just the two of us, tour included the old city, to a boutique winery, the newer city, beaches and back to the port market which is full of BBQ places. Uruguayans very proud of their country, 3.4 million people and 1.4 of them in Montevideo , Fabian born and bred in Uruguay but Italian descent, 90 percent of Uruguay is Italian and Spanish, such lovely people. First to the old city, all the sites and then Fabian took us to the local market, which I love going to these sort of places where the locals shop, bought some wine, had ... read more

Well here I sit in Villa Maria / Argentina and it is absolutely pissing down. Heavens just opened up this morning and the gods just used buckets to deliver the wet stuff to the planet. I have been lucky over the last few months regarding the weather so I am not complaining. And what does one do when it rains and nothing else can be done? Update the travel blog of course…… So let’s get started with my trip to Montevideo in Uruguay. After Carla and I had a fantastic time in the south of Brazil, visiting some awesome places and I personally learned a lot about this part of the world, it was time to go back to Porto Alegre. Carla had a plane to catch to return to Brasilia since she had some prior ... read more

We Went to the Colonia bus station and looked for a company sign that listed Montevideo and bought a ticket. We arrived in Montevideo in two hours and took a taxi to our hotel. I fell down on the job with this hotel. It was cheap $40.00 per night but the location was 2K from the areas tourist visit and was in a bad neighborhood. The bed was very uncomfortable and the share kitchen was disgusting. Well we were only staying two nights. On the up side we got lots of exercise walking to and from the tourist area every day. We also had two really good steak dinners here at El Fogon at 1080 San Jose and El Palenque at 579 Perez Casterlano. We went to the museum Historia del Arte and it was interesting ... read more

Wednesday 28thJanuary: Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province, Argentina In July 1865, a clipper named “Mimosa” entered the natural harbour of Golfo Nuevo, bringing 150 Welsh immigrants to Argentina. They found some natural caves on the south eastern shore of the harbour, in which they made their homes; the caves are still there. They named the place “Porth Madryn”, after the name of the estate of Madryn in Wales, owned at the time by Sir Love Jones-Parry, the Baron of Madryn. Spanish settlers soon followed and in the 20th Century, more still from several different European countries. Puerto Madryn, as it is now called, is very European in style. The architecture of many of the buildings reflects the English style and many of the houses look Bavarian in character. The beach culture, however, is entirely Spanish. It is ... read more
