Mon maillot de bain ... read more

On our last day in Huanchaco we went surfing.. or at least we hired surfboards and spent a little while splashing around embarassingly in the sea! Then we set off for Yurimaguas, a mere 22 hours away by bus. When we arrived we checked into a hostel and ate and wee just about to start exploring when it began to rain. It rained torrentially for 2 days. At one point we went to an internet cafe which was having the water removed from the floor by the bucketload as we typed! The rain stopped on the evening of the second day and we started to ask around about how to get to the port. After a lot of confused looks we ascertained that the river was an hour and a half away. Our bus delerium had ... read more

After quitting my flat, selling everything of value that could bring me some money for my travels and being at work until the very last moment, I started my journey at the 26th of June '06. My father drove me to the Munich Int. Airport from where I took my one-way flight to Lima and from there a national flight to Iquitos, a crazy jungle-city in the north-east of Peru... My interest in shamanism brought me directly to the "2nd Amazonian Shamanism Conference" in Iquitos. I found out about it on the net before and together with the one-week jungletrip following the conference these were actually the only 2 things I had planned in advance - everything else was completly open... The conference held about 150 people, curanderos (shamans/healers), int. scientists and speakers together with visitors ... read more

So Peru!!! Gonna head south and zigzag down through the sights to Lake Titikaka and then across into Bolivia. Hopefully should take about 3 weeks (as i write this just arrived in Arequipa having taken the overnight bus from Cusco, 20/07/06)..... First stop Iquitos... After the 7 day Amazon boat we took the speedboat into Iquitos (11 hours instead of 3 days!!!)... All Peruvian towns seem to be similar layout with a main plaza in the middle (Normally called Plaza De Armas) although these areas are generaly full of trees and fountains it struggles to hide the polution in the air, as most towns are in a valley and the vehicle and factory emmision regs are pretty much none!!! and the vehicles are old!!! as in i wouldn´t drive one and i´ll drive anything!!! The night sky lit by the full moon before me, I gazed out my bus window at the outline of the Andes mountains. Soon that picture-like view turned to jungle as far as the eye could see. This is the part of travel that I truly love, getting back into raw nature. Witnessing the beauty of God’s creation, untouched and thriving on its own. We made our way ten hours down a road that changed from mountain to jungle, pavement to dirt, winter temperatures to summer. Rest stops were made few and far between, wherein the men lined one side of the bus and the women the other. Unable to sleep, I simply stared out my window, listened to my favorite tunes, and thought about the unknown which lied ahead. Arriving in Coca early the next ... read more

Well, afore I start i´d like to amend a comment from the last blog... Shanta does not have a strange bent gait and waggle a cigar from his mouth - he is in fact a "gaucho" type... With the leg now holding up and having been very unadventurous in our Equadorian route thus far we thought we´d try a little used passage into Peru. Most overland entries are via Tumbes, although this is now noted for its abundance of touts and increasing numbers are now crossing at Macara. Very few westerners, or anyone else for that matter, go directly south from Vilcabamba to Zumba and onto La Balsa where you cross the river into Peru. Just before leaving we heard rumours of bandits on this route, but had already made up our minds. Glad we didn´t ... read more

After waking at 3.30am on the 10th May for a taxi ride across the border again to Tabatinga, Brazil, we boarded a canoe at 4am for the short trip to Santa Rosa, Peru for the passport check and stamps and the departure of the fast boat to Iquitos, Peru for the 10 hour journey even further upstream as we both had flights out on the 12th of May. Arrived the 10th of May.. Iquitos is a cool little town. With a main central square and an eclectic mix of people we found that we were back on the tourist loop for sure now and it is great to be able to talk to people using a more extensive english vocabulary... i feel educated once again!.. In the middle of town there is a main Plaza de ... read more
