.....So we got on the speed boat from Iquitos for our trip to the lodge. It turns out that the Amazon is super low at the moment, which meant a two and a half hour trip took the best part of six... And the reason... Well..there are so many trees that fall into the river. And these trees are hard wood...which means they stay there...sticking up....waiting to snare boats...which is what one did... We were speeding along, and then all of a sudden a massive bang and we were all thrown a bit. The we looked down...and water was pouring in. And we were in the middle of the Amazon !!! Oh dear ! Anyway - the captain sped to the shore, at which point the thing was virtually submerged. We clambered off, into the mud...and ... read more

Iquitos is hot, sweaty and rammed with autokars (Peru´s version on the Tuk Tuk) rushing everywhere. The main square is beautiful, with a church that when lit up at night resembles a story book castle. We had a lovely walk around the town and had a great lunch in Ari´s Burger Bar, which is apparently THE place to hang out. Having been fed and watered we went about finding a tour to the jungle. Luckily the hostal was able to help us and we managed to book ourselves on to a 6 day excursion to the Amazon Explorers lodge (www.perujungle.com) which is about two and half hours away from Iquitos by boat, on a tributory off the Amazon called the Tahuayo River. (Look it up in your school atlases...). Finally - took a tour round Belem ... read more

We had an interesing last 2 days in Lima. We got up at the crack of dawn and got a taxi to the airport, only to find that our ticket had the wrong time printed on and the flight to Iquitos had already left! We had previously called the airline to try and reconfirm the flights but were told that it wasn´t neccessary. Anyway, they said we could get the later flight at 4pm (bearing in mind it´s now 6am) so we had a long, long wait in Lima airport, spending our time reading, playing pocket draughts (Guy is the current champ!), drinking lots of tea and coffee and trying (but failing) to see the bright side of our situation; at least we'd get to Iquitos today. Or so we thought... ...It was about 3.30pm and ... read more

Ahoj vsem Ve ctvtek vecer nas cekala dlouha cesta do mesta Iquitos.Dve noci a jeden den jsme stravili v autobuse, na zaver cesty nas cekal let nad Amazonii. Prvni nocni cesta autobusem z Huarazu do Limy probehla celkem v pohode. Rano v Lime jsme sehnali listky na bus smer mesto Tingo Maria. Cesta trvala asi 12 hodin a vedla pres pohori And s vrcholem asi 4818 m.n.m. Pred cestou rozdavali v autobuse sacky, coz nebylo od veci.Nekteri spolucestujici z Peru to nezvladli..)))) Vecer jsme dorazili na misto a pokracovali jsme jinym busem dale smer Pucallpa. Nocni spoj z Tingo Marie do Pucallpy byl asi nejhorsi autobus v Jizni Americe, byl preplneny, spinavy, bez perovani a v noci si vzal rec hlidac s brokovnici. Potreboval asi prispet na novou pistol, nedali jsme mu ale ani sol...))) V ... read more

Warning: although I have tempered the language as much as possible, some may consider the subject matter of this blog not to be suitable for tender young minds… I have a hangover. It was my 40th birthday yesterday, and Claire and I partied until far beyond our normal bedtime and are suffering as a result. Luckily this trip doesn’t have an early start and we have time to collect ourselves and find something to eat before meeting the rest of our would-be shamanic healers and head into the jungle. The restaurants in Iquitos are pretty good by most Peruvian standards, and despite the fact that we are in the middle of nowhere before we even start, we find an Italian place which apparently flies all its ingredients in from Lima. Trouble is, Lima wouldn’t know genuine ... read more

Fab at Forty Before jumping in our dug out canoe and padling up the Amazon river to face our demons at the Shamonic healing camp, Simon had one particular demon of his own to face, the dreaded 40th Birthday. Our trip to the jungle was once again thwarted by flight cancellations and we found ourselves unexpectedly in Lima airport for the day. This presented us with the welcome prospect of western style fast food, so it was McDonalds all round courtesy of Lan Peru. We may have been delayed but at least we got there alive, one of the planes we travelled on in Peru came down in a storm in the week we were at the camp, scarey stuff. We arrived in Iquitos around ten pm. It was hot, damn hot and a little humid ... read more
