Have a brother, or any other family member/friend you get along well with, in the country you are planning on visiting. Preferably one with a nice house and plenty of space to put you up. Travel with your mum, who prefers to get a cab when arriving at the airport instead of the local bus, saving you time, if not money. It is also way more comfortable. Don’t worry too much about the money, as your mum will insist you only pay the amount you would normally pay for that bus you didn’t take. Request a cold beer be put in the fridge by said brother for when you finally arrive at his house. There is nothing like a refreshing beer after a very long and turbulent flight. Sleep in that nice comfy bed that has ... read more

It is a funny thing, time. It always moves forward. And before you know it the time allotted to your trip has come to an end. You look back and there it is, and yet is not. Two weeks ago you remember still being in Ecuador. You remember planning your journey back to Lima. Taking that road from Vilcabamba to Zumba. The road that started paved and ended as a dirt road. The fantastic scenery, jungle clad mountains, steep ravines, raging rivers. The precipitous drops threating the tires of the bus which seemed to hover over the edge of the road, rather than clinging to it. The road never seemed to end, snaking its way through those green hills, up and down valleys, every turn affording new majestic views. And then suddenly you arrived in Zumba. ... read more

From Tana Toraja to Lima is a rather big leap. From a European perspective one is in the far east, while the other is in the far west. Luckily it is not so much a leap of faith, but more a leap of distance. And if you cut the distance in half, let’s say by stopping over in Holland, than those leaps become mere hops. And if you don’t just stop over, but stay for two weeks than the whole exercise turns into a breeze. So, in the space of two weeks and a bit, I have reached the opposite side of the world, which is long by modern standards, but short if you compare it to the olden days. I stopped over in Holland, not just to cut the trip in half, but also to ... read more

Since I am writing this on second Christmas day I thought I could afford myself the luxury of having such a corny blog title. Merry Christmas indeed! A Merry Christmas from Lima, with family. My brother's family in this case. Christmas in Peru, but with a Swedish twist. The twist being our Christmas dinner, with some traditional Swedish dishes like Christmas ham, herring in mustard sauce, Janssons temptation (a potato dish with cream, onions and anchovies) and herring salad. A lot of fish. The Swedes love their fish, and their dill, which is in nearly every dish as well. Now talking about family, a friend of mine, this Christmas discovered, much to her horror, that her great-great-grandfather was a slave owner back in the day. Slightly unsettling perhaps, but really, it has nothing to do with ... read more

I have arrived in Lima, to start a trip which would not have happened, but for last year’s event. A journey I am undertaking with my mother. It should have been my father who accompanied my mother, it was their trip. But it was not to be. And so my mother and I start on this journey, on the trip she and my dad had planned. It is in a very real sense a new beginning. For the first time I won’t be able to share my travels with my dad, he won’t be reading my blogs, he won’t be asking me questions about the places I visit, he won’t be tracing my wanderings on a map back home, and when I come home, he won’t be there waiting for me. This trip with my mother ... read more

Kai iš ryto atsikeliam, pas Jorge atėjus tėvų puseserė kuri šiek tiek prižiūri namus. Jorge ne pats tvarkingiausias vaikis, tad ji šiek tiek aptvarko namus.

Pasėdim prie televizoriaus, pasigam... read more

Sorprendidos ... read more

The commute makes me feel alive, not like commuting in the states. Everything in Lima is intensely alive. Its not getting off the L for a lonely walk home, or walking through a deserted campus to get to the library. There are people everywhere. The city is not built for exurban sprawl. It never reaches magnificent peaks of glass and steel but also never spreads itself vainly. The elite cannot remove themselves from the crowds, so we put ourselves in the center. The best neighborhoods are centralized near the main thoroughfares. The traffic makes me feel alive. The beaches make me feel alive. The waves don’t gently lap at my feet. They know what I’ve done. They want revenge. In Lima the beaches are of all smooth, fist sized rocks. Sandy beaches are available to the ... read more

spent the week hopping around being looked after by maga and family, on monday i had my big toe nail removed by the cheapest doctor i could find, it was going to hurt no matter who i sore, it turned out to be quite entertaining, any way im glade its gone, and healing fast, it gave me the chance to sit and rest and relax a bit, watching some dvds and going to the cafes, we planed a trip to south beach on a day that seemed to be as clear as a bell, but once we got on the highway a thick sea spray came over and reduced visability to 50feet none the less. and at the beach you couldnt see the next wave coming was really funny, it still maintained 27degrese though. on the ... read more
