(Sorry for two similar posts in one day. This survey should be easier to access than the last survey I sent. Please check it out and forward the link to everyone you know!) Dear friends, This is a critical time for the people of La Oroya, Peru, and we need to hear YOUR VOICE in order to help them. Here is a 5 QUESTION (YES/NO) SURVEY regarding demands being made to the government of Peru by the company Doe Run Peru that will negatively affect the people and environment of La Oroya. Please take 3 minutes to fill it out. For an introduction to the issue, please read below: La Oroya is one of the ten most contaminated cities in the world (according to Blacksmith Institute). The population finds itself gravely effected by the contamination produced ... read more

Our bus followed the Mantaro River through the Andes from Huancayo to La Oroya. We saw the river turn a dark brown color. We saw the mountains change from gray and green to white. The white had nothing to do with snow, but everything to do with contamination. We literally saw the poison that is slowly killing the environment and slowly killing the residents of La Oroya. La Oroya, Peru is one of the top 10 most contaminated cities in the world. It is by far the most disgusting place I have ever seen in my life. The visible contamination of the earth is haunting; the invisible contamination of some 12,000 kids is even more haunting. 99% of the kids in La Oroya have elevated levels of lead in their blood. Our entrance into the city ... read more

Huatapallana is a snow and ice capped peak that towers over its neighbours reaching an impressive 5,100 metres above sea level. Tim, Malaika, Cally and I decided to hike to one of its glaciers near its summit on the advice from previous and current travellers to Huancayo. Tim, being an adventure and outdoor enthusiast, was extremely excited. Malaika and Cally were dubious but intrepid nonetheless. And I had resigned myself to the fact that we were going to climb a friggin mountain. We also conscripted two others to join our group: Karen, a volunteer at an orphanage, from the US, and Vaughn, a Canadian who was pre-med and volunteering at the Chupaca Med Centre with the four of us. And so, on a fine Saturday morning at 8am, we all gathered in the centre of town, ... read more

Huancayo is a city that is over 3 kilometres in the sky, nestled in the Peruvian Andes “far off the gringo trail”, according to the Lonely Planet. It’s air is thin, it’s people happy, and it’s dogs wild and free. To get here, our bus from Lima climbed steep and windy roads, but they were mostly bitumen and in good condition. I was asleep for most of the trip, and looking back on it, it may have been the change in atmospheric conditions that made me drowsy, because I was dead to the world for hours. I did manage to wake up for lunch and to watch some of the in-bus movie: The Lovely Bones. But that soon sent me back to sleep. I did fare far better than two ladies in seats in front of ... read more

(Excuse my Spanish, I know it is bad) The medical centre was actually in Chupaca, not Huancayo as we originally thought. It was a 30 minute ride in a combi-bus, which we caught just outside where we lived. The bus ride was often cramped, with many people piling on, like it was some sort of clown car. It would take a set route, but would stop anywhere, and a person would hang out the open door yelling at people as they passed, to try and beckon them over to the bus, as if they could break some sort of Guinness world record for getting the most people on. For our particular bus, the person would hang out the door and yell “Chupaca, Chupaca, Chupaaaaaaca” as if the third time was the most important and needed to ... read more

We arrived at Hacienda la Florida on December 8th 2009, by bus from Lima, a gruelling six hour journey with the usual latin music blaring from the radio the whole journey. By the time we had taken a taxi from Tarma the short distance to La Florida it was well past midnight and we were absolutely shattered from our journey from Chachapoyas. We were greeted at the gate and shown our room, and were able to throw off our rucksacks and get some well earned rest. The following morning at about six we heard the sounds of the Hacienda waking, with footsteps above in the kitchen, and voices calling across the yard. As soon as we stuck our heads out of the door we were accosted by Carlos, one of the employees on the farm, and ... read more

Hello! On Saturday morning we went to Torre Torre which, alike everything else here, you have to climb up some very steep hills to reach! As we walked through a small village on our way, many children ran up to us eager to practice their english shouting ´hello, i love you, goodbye!´ Torre Torre was great to see and made some brilliant photos, but i´m pretty certain that it is the most terrifying thing i have ever done! It is in the middle of nowhere and definitely not tourist friendly! We had to climb along thin strips of rock, whilst very high up, on loose footing and when i tried to grab hold of rocks they fell away! I can´t explain how horrible it was at times, but it was just about worth it! On the ... read more
