They´re really cute, and fuzzy. Alpacas that is. So we are leaving to volunteer for 2 weeks in jungle. Its hard to believe that our trip is half over and we have to leave all of the kids here. So much has happened over the past month it has certainly flown by. On the weekend, we walked to Torre Torre, a rock formation just outside Huancayo-- very reminiscent of a tiny grand canyon (or so I have heard). We also visited Huancayo´s local zoo. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my. I feel like most of the animals could have broken out of their corrugated tin cages if they wanted to... the fox definately looked like it was preparing for it. i myself (kristina) didnt go to torre torre or the zoo, but i did go ... read more

ok, so to continue from where i left off- i take the combi back to the volunteer residence, where i live with the co-ordinators of mosoq ayllu, patty and juan jose, and their two kids, little juan jose and galilea. galilea may be one of the cutest, most rambunctios kids ever. she often runs around screaming for no reason, and can often be found draging the kitten around by the neck. (the kitten is surprisingly good about this, and rarely bites/scratches her). I then take my spanish lesson, which is 2 hours, and is pretty much invaluable to me in my life in peru. then lunch, another combi ride, and im at coto coto. i have spent a lot more time in coto coto than i have in ladrierra this trip. coto coto is an orphinage, ... read more

hola from peru! this is kristina, just wanting to let all of you faithful readers out there what its like in the day of a peruvian volunteer. this last week, i have been waking up at around 8:00 to the sound of dogs barking, taxis honking, the recitation of spanish verbs etc, and the occasional herd of cows or sheep passing by. and no, we dont live in the country, or even near it for that matter. for whatever reason, herds of farm animals will trot by on our residential street and end up in a park, where they will eat and leave poop for us to step in. i eat breakfast, and walk about 15 minutes to the combi stop. for those of you who dont know, a combi is a regular sized van, seating ... read more

I read the news today oh boy... Actually I didn´t-- i have no idea whats happening in north america right now. I´m really just assuming it still exists, so there are still people to read this thing. So I figured we should right a little bit about what we do all week. From Andrea´s perspective: 8-10 is spanish lessons-- they´re coming along quite nicely. Don´t expect me to be reading Don Quixote in the original spanish (or even in english) any time soon, but I did mangage to direct a taxi driver today. baby steps. And if you need the time told in spanish, I´m your girl. 10-2 is spent working in Coto Coto, which is the orphanage for kids up to age 6. In the mornings, its just the little ones who aren´t at school, ... read more

It has been a fine trip in the Ande-spiked departments of Peru. I have ventured barely 400 kms from Lima but have traveled through quite a range of cities and communities whose people might be focused on sucking you dry of your money or completely happy ignoring a gringo minding his own business or ready to jive about the world and the weather. I think the latter is beginning to grow on me. Huancayo, off the typical gringo-trail, is one of these towns that harbor relaxed, focused and unjaded people living life without the need for contemplating me in their presence. Its amazing to see a region of people who only a decade ago were living under the terrorist regime of the Shining Path communist movement. Huancayo, nestled in a high valley, is a wonderful example ... read more

So I made it back today from the High Jungle........ I was actually sad to leave, it was so beautiful! Unfortunately the night before we left (we had to leave at 5:30 in the morning) I got pretty sick- I was up all night puking......the risks of travel. I did feel a bit better in the morning though and better as the day went on, despite the bumpy ride. On the way we stopped at the highest point of the the mountain pass and visited a small community living in very harsh conditions. But they live the way theay always have for centuries barely touched by modernisation. It was about a 5 hour trip to a small town in the jungle(the nearest city was La Merced) and we ate lunch there with a family who were ... read more

Hey everybody! I finished my spanish course on friday and I feel a little more confidant getting around but its still pretty hard to have an actual conversation with somebody...... but for just 5 days I think I did pretty good! Yestery Lucho(the owner) took me and another girl from vancouver- Amy- to a village outside of town where we saw how they do the gourd carvings. And right next to the craft shop there was a big wedding going on and we got to stay and partake in the festivities! It was a really amazing experience and the people just loved the fact that we were there- we were like celebrities! There was lots of dancing and drinking beer! Tomorrow I leave for my 5 day High Jungle trip so I wont be on the ... read more

Ok, I finally have a chance to post something here. I´ve pretty much been travelling for 3 days, I had one free day in Lima yesterday but was too busy running around. I found it a little overwhelming to say the least but I think if a had a bit more time to relax and mosey around I might´ve enjoyed it more. The hostal I stayed at (the Green House) was great Pedro and Christian were sooo helpful to me- they practically held my hand showing me how to get around. I met up with Rosario, who helps run Incas del Peru to get my train ticket to Huancayo and we ended up hanging out in downtown Lima for a while- we´re the same age! This morning I got up bright and early yet again to ... read more
